I saw the cutest thing today. My boxer who is going thru a really bad false pregnancy has adopted our new foal. They play and groom each other. I even caught them taking a nap together. My dog has been interested in her since she was born, but the grooming is a new thing. I just hope she doesn't take it to the next level and try nursing:eek:. The best part is mom is happy to have a nanny!!!

Terrific pictures! Maybe you should let someone at Animal Planet know--what a great story!

we have had a similar Nurse maid type of thing with one of our Jack Russels who is now gone. Many years ago we had a crippled pony foal , she did not leave the foal for the first 3 weeks until it could stand and move on its own..
Take lots of video :)

MagicRoseFarm isn't it amazing how instinct takes over.
Farrier's Daughter Thanks. I wish the pics were better quality. I snapped them with my cell phone. Maybe tomorrow I will get a repeat performance.

awwwww..... what great photos. (I'm actually impressed with the quality for it being a phone!)
The interrelationships between species never cease to amaze me.
My Big ol' bay mare would sometimes groom dogs when she was feeling particularly maternal. Never had it go the other way though!
I like the 2nd & 3rd pics best... ;)

Thanks Everyone.
Yes Flash Gordon that is the same mare. Although I hardly recognize her. She has blossomed into a beautiful creature. Here are some pics of her.

How cute! And nice of mom not to care about the dog being around her baby (though I'm sure you were careful to introduce them all). :)

Mom has been great with the dog from day one. I was actually surprised that she was ok with the dog with her baby. We keep teasing our dog that my other mare won't be as generous with her baby. She hates dogs!!

Ohhh - Just too cute.
I wish I'd had my camera with me last year when my Saluki was playing with a filly. That was a serious amount of long, gangly leg playing around.
I just wish I could show these to my friend, but it might get her all depressed as she just lost her boxer of 9 years.

That is just too cool!! Boxers are great dogs and one I hope to own someday. One of my friend's in high school had one named Rocky and I had a ball w/ that dog. He was so neat.
Thanks for sharing. Mare looks great and baby, too.

Wonderful and great photos. Our dog Barney, who is now deceased, loved ANY babies, from chickens to kittens.
We had a reverse sort of thing here. When we got our great daneRocky a rescue, some of the mares would nicker to him at first thinking he was a foal! He is 34 inches at the shoulder. To this day when he walks up to them he licks the horse's noses.
