I. Bugs.
The bugs are here now.
Servant - where are my fly boots?
And the mask as well?
How do you expect
For me to graze lush spring grass
With this distraction?
II. Theft at the Barn.
We were robbed last night.
Of oatmeal raisin cookies.
Four were in the bag.
We think the cat, Ming,
Was in cahoots with the dogs.
We suspect Brody.
For a dog, he's smart.
He knows where Mom keeps my treats.
They're at dog level.
How to prevent this?
Possibly a Cookie Cam?
Serious offense!!!
III. Grass.
I long for pasture.
Ours is now a lawn of green.
That's what spring is for.

I am not nearly as talented.

I've changed my color
Once was roan, now solid brown
Rolling in the mud
Full of energy
Grabbed the bit and took off, then
Mom gave me what for
This time of the year
The stabby lady comes to
Stick things in my neck

Hark! Tis spring it's here,
The sight of grass growing,
The sound of dinner being served in the barn.
(Hey where's the Kirin?)

The haiku meter:
You must have five-seven-five.
Or it's not haiku.

Spring firsts, by Max (age 3 7/8)
Lost a shoe today
Still had to go to work
My trainer said I'm getting spoiled
I get a treat just for picking up a hoof
My first time out in the jumping paddock this spring
Ground is rough and I tripped a few times
Mom said "that's OK" and patted me
More firsts for Mom and I: we trotted over a pole
I managed not to trip
Did some sitting trot
Mom said I was comfortable and easy to sit
Not like Andy (Note to Andy: I rock!)
Afterwards, Mom held my head
Gave me lots of kisses and said
I was a very good boy
Said she was going to kiss me as much as she wanted
Just for today!

*sigh* Raining today.
The paddock is all gloppy.
Still, Bow and I play.
That is, we try to!
We can only do so much.
Spring rains are BORING.
Mom, come and get me!
I need to roll, and get scritched.
And I need some treats.

Haiku submitted by Royal, 8yo OTTB:
It’s summer today.
Had a week or so of spring,
then bam. Eighty plus.
Mom arrives tacked up.
Takes one look and changes clothes.
Brings me into barn.
Ow! Don't- It hurts, Mom!
Superficial, she sighs.
Goops on soothing salve.
Lead gelding bit me.
Raw spot where the saddle sits
and the surcingle.
Mom leads me to yard.
PO’d him on purpose, eh?
Sunsh-i-i-ine, and grass time.
*snort* munch munch munch
