View Full Version : When did I become a waitress?

Lately it seems like most of my interaction with the horses involves pushing the food cart.
It used to seem like I orchestrated their lives, now it seems like they orchestrate mine.
Anyone else?

Boy, me too!! One of my horses has alergies - so my barn is cleaner than my house. I spend most of my afternoon soaking hay, taking hay out of 'soak' to drip, mixing meds, supplements, blah, blah, blah. Who feels like cooking for the 'humans' when you've been cooking all day out in the barn?? (Ok, none of this stuff takes a lot of time, but can't exactly run off for the day without a major plan in place/instruction manuel left for the DH:sadsmile:)

I'm tempted to have "Food Source" tattooed to my forehead.

My gelding is currently getting treated for a skin issue (been going on for a month now) by me coming out to the barn twice a day (I live 10 miles away) to clean & rub lotion into the scabs. He goes back to the vet on Tuesday, so hopefully this will change!?!?

You became a waitress when you started wearing that "Hooters of North Dayton" shirt that your husband got you three years ago in the barn. :D

Not a waitress...they get tips.
I'm in Animal Food Service too. Multiple times per day it's time to feed this one, feed that one, hay the horses, set up dinner grain, start something soaking, make sure the cat is getting the right kidney diet food, make sure the dog eats smaller meals more than once to avoid bloat, make sure the hay is clean, dry, mold and weed free, scrub buckets and feed tubs/dishes, and on and on and on.
And then there's the family......gotta love those nights when you hear, "What do you mean there's no fresh dessert tonight?"  As if I'm going to bake more than twice a week, LOL!

A day in the life of JSwan
Feed dogs
Feed cats
Feed chickens
Feed spouse
Feed horses
Feed goats
Feed pigs
Feed cows
Go to kennel
Feed/walk hounds
Come home
Feed, water or give attention to whatever species hollers the loudest.
Maybe ride one or two or 3 horses depending on weather, back pain, and if no one else needs or demands feed, water or attention.
In and out of the house doing chores and checking COTH as a diversion, depending on the weather, back pain, and if no one else needs or demands feed, water or attention.
Rotate fields and drag or restore so that animals have copious amounts of feed so that they will not holler for feed, water or attention.
Evening comes
Feed, water or give attention to whatever species hollers - including spouse.
Fall asleep...... then jerk awake with the realization that I forgot to feed or water myself. (Chubby Hubby ice cream does not count)
The End.

See, the issue here is expectations. When I get my quarterly urge to bake, my husband is beside himself;)
I love feeding! It makes me feel so popular, and is excellent for my ego!

Oh, Chubby Hubby definitely counts! My absolute favorite of the Ben & Jerry's variety! Its a shame the containers are so small. ;)

I am using slow feeders and am filling them up maybe once a day or once every couple of days with hay. Love them!
... okay, so I do stand there in the morning and hold the bucket for MR Thoroughbred while he eats to make sure he gets it all ;) I use a feed bag at night, but in the am I add oil so it has to be in a bucket...

I don't know what's worse. I feel like a homeless person around my boarding barn, begging for extra scaps of food to placate my beasts in between feeding time. I always scoop up what little bits of hay I can find off the ground and get really excited if I find anything resembling a portion of a flake.

You raise a very valid point. Sometimes the horse biz is a no-win situation. Either you've got 'em at home and can feed what you want - and please be assured Quattro is ALREADY hanging out in the corner of his paddock that abuts my house, SCREAMING for his lunch, and it's only 11:24 as I type  - or you're in a boarding barn scrabbling for everybody else's leftovers.
OK, so I'm sick and in a bad mood, but I feel your pain as well as the OPs! I've been both places!
