Can any body tell me what characteristics he consistently throws? He seems to be a prolific stallion.

Kostolany throws size, movement, and you need a mare with a nice head as he can throw somewhat "moosy" looking heads.
Also his frozen semen is of excellent quality. I have a friend that bred to him the past two years and got her mare in foal with 1/2 dose each time. Both foals (fillies) are top quality.

What about temperament?

I have two Kostolany offpsring going very nicely under saddle. They were both born in 2005 from very different mothers and both have great temperaments. One was a filly and one a colt and they were both easy to start and easy to train. The gelding recently did a 4 year old FEI test (at his first rated show, second show experience) at one of the qualifying shows and despite being tense, scored a solid 69.8% with very encouraging comments from the judges. The filly was started under saddle recently and can be found on youtube (search Valkyree or user sovereignfarm). As stated previously, you probably won't get a lot of "pretty" but you're likely to get a solid mover with a great temperament. The semen was also high-quality and Suzanne Harfst in WA is always a pleasure to work with. Good luck!

Both fillies have excellent temperments and are very bold. They don't run away from scary things.

Just had to respond on the "not pretty" and "Moosy" head comments. We have a gorgeous coming 4 year old filly (with a beautiful head )- Kindle by Kostolany. Not just my opinion, but Hilda Gurney's too based on her evaluations and placings of Kindle at in-hand sport horse breeding classes.
Kindle was named Division Champion 3 year old and under Dressage filly after handily winning her 3 year Dressage Sport Horse Class at the Northwest Sport Horse Breeders Classic Show during Show #1. She repeated that feat at Championships’ Show #2 and again won her 3 years old class besting some extremely serious competition . In her first outing since her weanling debut, she was complimented by Judge Hilda Gurney as “an elegant, well muscled filly with an elastic walk and a springy trot with nice reach”. Kindle also won her Oldenburg Verband breed class at both shows.
Finishing out 2008 and because of her remarkable in-hand winnings, Kindle was honored to become the Champion 3 year old Dressage Filly of the
Northwest Sport Horse Breeder’s Association.
Importantly her disposition is also great, she is very smart and trainable. I also find her to be very athletic and bold.
As my 1st post, I am not sure if I can attach a photo here but you can see her on our website under the mares section. You also can see more of his foals on the Landel's (owner of Kostolany) website.
As mentioned earlier, Kostolany's frozen semen is very fertile and the Harst's who represent him in the US are wonderful to work with. In fact as vets and since we live 3 hours away, they did the A.I. for us.

We are huge Kostolany fans and plan to breed again to him. Who knows maybe we will get another Blue Hors Matinee!

While Kostolany is a prolific stallion, to my best knowledge he is also a roarer. There is a genetic component of this problem and certain breed associations (like BWP) require the stallion to be scoped before licensing. I believe this fact should be available to every prospective breeder. If my information is wrong on this particular stallion, I truly apologize. Andras www.prairiepinesfarm.com

the mare I would be breeding to kostolany shares the same grand dam as blu hors matine'

Kostolany has produced over a thousand foals. Somewhere along the line he (or the dam) produced a couple of roarers. Would that stop me from breeding to him ? Never. With his breeding statistics and performance records from the dozens if not hundreds of successful dressage horses worldwide, let that speak for him, not OMG he produced a roarer !
Its over-blown B. S.

My Kostolany gelding, Santiago SF, just came back from Del Mar where he was Reserve Champion in the USEF 4 year old test! The work comes so naturally that the only thing we work on is getting him relaxed in new environments. He did well with excellent comments from the judges and a 77.8%. From the offspring I've seen, you can pretty much count on good movement and brains! Good luck!

Congratulations on your pretty filly - her refined head is the exception, not the norm from the Enrico Caruso - Kostolany stallion line. None of us is knocking Kostolany; think we're all big fans (visited Haemelschenburg several years ago and Herr Langels had him shown to us in-hand . . . at 20yrs, that stallion still had SUCH presence and still moved beautifully). However, the fact is, most experienced breeders who know a lot about the line would choose a mare w/a more refined head for this stallion.
BTW, if you want to go for another Matine', you'd need to breed to Silvermoon (a Kostolany son). Of course, if you bred to E.H. Gribaldi (also by Kostolany) you could possibly get another Totilas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL0S5re7sls!!

I am definitely still going to breed to him. I would like to breed to silvermoon one day but I am afraid this mare is to closely related to him.

I have a super filly by the Dutch son of Kostolany, Polansky. Beoliet is a Dark, Dark bay three year old, out of a Zeoliet mare, Just as you said, she is very trainable, brave and a pleasure to be around. She is just getting started undersaddle and I am anxious to get her to the shows this summer. BTW The Dutch are very particular about Roarers and would never approve a stallion that has that problem.

Good Luck Punky. I think you will be very happy with your Kostolany foal. I would love to see photos next year.
I forwarded this "roaring" thread to Susanne Lutz(veterinarian from Germany) in Yakima WA. Drs. Lutz and Susanne Harfst represent Kostolany in the US and market his semen. They know Kostolany's owners well and have bred Trakeheners for years. I thought she should have a chance to reply to this roaring issue. With her permission following is Dr. Susanne's response. I hope this squashes that roaring rumour. Kostolany is an incredible and more importantly proven producer of many champion sport horses.
"This issue is probably as old as Kostolany's breeding career and in
Germany it died down years ago already, because it had been based on bad
rumors only and the facts have spoken in Kostolany's favor over and over
again.
This stallion's influence on the international world of sport horses is
undisputed and Gribaldi, Blue Horse Matinee and Painted Black are only a
few of his kids and grandkids out there.
I think the rumor was created by some jealous competitors, trying to
bad-mouth a stallion taking away their breedings.
I know Kostolany in person, have visited him quite often and saw him
under saddle on many occasions, often standing inside the arena while
Otto was riding him around us in all three gaits. So if he'd be a
roarer, I would have noticed, especially since I am a veterinarian and
used to paying attention to the slightest suspicious sounds.
I also know many, many sons, daughters and grandchildren of Kostolany
and I don't know of a single roarer among them. With so many babies on
the ground, and especially with both parents responsible for the
outcome, (plus including other causes like upper respiratory
infections), you'd expect every stallion to have a few roarers among his
offspring, but Kostolany certainly isn't one to produce them.
I remember that a similar rumor was spread regarding Enrico Caruso, but
just like in Kostolany's case it died down, because it was unfounded."

It looks like we may be joining the "Kostolany Club" this year. What an incredible stallion he is! We've actually been fans for years, ever since seeing a video of him in a theater type production with a lady in a huge flowing gown. I wish I could find that video.
This year it may just be working out for us to breed a mare to him. She is a black, Meisterwind daughter who produced the co-highest scoring colt in the RPSI last year. We are excited!
Honestly, I figured the roaring thing was just a rumor.

If you liked that video, you should search a little further for the one of Kostolany & Otto Langels doing Phantom of the Opera. Kosto & Otto literally dance around a woman in ballet dress with only the spotlight illuminating the area. Finally, Kosto lays down & the woman -clearly under the spell of "the phantom" & his black steed - sits in front of Otto, and Kosto rises, spiriting the woman away w/the phantom. Unbelievably beautiful. You will not regret joining this club!
