I came across this ad.

Now, I don't need an unbroke pony, and I'm nowhere close to CO, but I'll spring for this pony if someone can give her a home.

http://denver.craigslist.org/grd/1122554357.html

"i only got 2 bales of feed left, so she needs to go soon!! halter, lead, and a bale of feed comes with her! ASP!! " !!!!:eek:

According to "Jaylo"s owner, she needs to be kept in a small pen with a lead rope dragging from her halter, or else you can't catch her. Hasn't been handled much by people at all.

Here she is!

This thread is an unusual situation. We don't typically allow links to horses for sale, regardless of price, who's listing them, etc., and we don't allow fundraising efforts on the forums for non-501c3 organizations (or unofficial rescue efforts).

However, since the OP has generously offered to cover this girl's small purchase price in full if someone else is willing to take her in, she's essentially a Giveaway.

We may have to clarify our policies related to situations like this in the future if it becomes a recurring issue.

Thanks!

Thanks for allowing this to stay, and putting it in the right place!

I know there probably isn't too much room for a unbroke pony mare on someone's farm, but I thought I'd give it a try.

Thank you mod!!! I have a similar thread about a donkey. It would be good if you could allow these kinds of postings for *free* guys that need homes.

Grrrrr.... Can't stop thinking about "my" pony.

If someone has room in Colorado, I probably could help pay to feed her.

OMG what a cute pony. You have no idea how tempted I am. But I am about 10 hours south of this pony and don't need another horse. I have four minis already, three big horses and a pony. Maybe we could come up with a transport train to get her to Aubreyy? Where are you located Aubreyy?

I live in NYC...no way that I'd be able to pay board on a pony that I can't use for anything!

I am in Colorado....I lease stalls at a facility that might offer discounted board. While I am actually searching for a pony, I need a broke one, for my son, first horse. But if ya'll want to pitch in, I can certainly get the pony a safe home for the time being. Email if you want.

Mod 1 I do wish you would review and clarify your approach.

EVERY equid deserves a good home. EVERY horse, donkey and pony deserves it.

Makes no difference whether its a horse already in a great home and with an owner that's responsible and with sufficient hay to cover it's needs for the next few weeks and perhaps has just been made redundant and is trying to get ahead of the game and sell their well trained and well cared for and much loved horse for $5,000 or someone who hasn't made provision, hasn't ever even trained the animal and has no food and is trying to sell it for $130 through a tacky advert on craigslist.

Sorry but I'm just not getting your policy at all!!

Seems to me like you're allowing links to adverts where it's people with cheap, often neglected, untrained horses but not permitting links to those who take care of their animals.

Quite simply this is yet another cheap unhandled shetland pony on the market and using emotional blackmail (only 2 bales of hay left!) in order to make some money.

IMO it's not beholding for an organisation with established credibiility like Chronicle of the Horse to go assisting folks to sell or get shut of their cheap untrained stock.

This isn't a rescue. It's a cheap untrained pony being SOLD for it's market rate.

(oh and I do sincerely hope it does end up somewhere better but I'm just NOT getting why COTH are helping with free advertising!!!!)

But Thomas... the untrained and neglected have virtually NO chance at being sold anywhere. If the animal is "for sale" for peanuts and at a very serious risk, then the equine community is to be praised for pulling together to help.

There are many of us who try to do the best we can with what little we have to help these guys out. Yeah it really stinks that people treat their animals like garbage- so when the *we* can't help via physical methods (cash, housing, feed, etc) we can help in an educational fashion.

The Donkey thread... he was list for sale technically on craigslist. But guess where his next stop was if something wasn't done? Certainly worse than where he was at. He was already returned several times. Beaten, tied, rinse repeat. Yeah I could have just turned around and walked away, certainly *had to* considered that, but because others HERE stepped up to help me help him make a rescue possible I was able to proceed.

If it were not for COTH... I could not have rescued the donkey.

It's not rescue. It's a cheap buy! It's a horse going from a poor home to a better home at best.

A heck of a lot of horses end up going off in trucks and on their way in a dog food tin.

What I don't get at all is why it's o.k. to link to an advert that is using emotional blackmail and begging folks to buy because it's cheap and they're nearly out of food rather than a horse that's say $700 and untrained and no market worth other than meat money according to what it weighs.

It seems to me that COTH has become a great way for low end of the market to get free advertising and direct access to those who care about horses and even get some sucker to take away their problem neglected horse.

But genuine owners pay for the privilege of advertising, aren't allowed to do it here and get stuck with their horse if they can't get a buyer.

.

Which is why "rescue" is often disguised as something else, and is so imperative- even in situations like this. Frankly, I do not give a rats ass about the people who have animals like this in their possession- I care about getting the animal away from them. And, often times, that includes "bail, ransom, or purchase money". I have a gelding here who came out of the kill pen at a local sale. The owner of the sale- shockingly- wanted money for a starving, critically ill gelding. It makes him nonetheless a rescue. It just verifies that where you find them is not the issue- it is getting them out.

THANK YOU!!!

The more I hear about "Jaylo" (wtf?) the more I want to get her out. She has apparently lived for a while in a tiny pen dragging a rope. Thats no life for a pony- no wonder she's scared!

So don't read the threads then Thomas... it's easier for you to just pass on by them now isn't it? Pull at the heartstring?... oh how noble for you to be so caring about protecting the emotions of bulletin board people.

I hardly think op's posting is competition for someone selling a $5000 horse... HARDLY. Give me a break.

Just to clarify, we agree that we don't want the forums used as an outlet for free advertising for folks trying to make a few bucks off of a horse they likely should be thrilled to find a home for as a Giveaway. We don't want members of the community indirectly targeted by scammers or taken advantage of, etc.

This thread was allowed because the OP had offered in the first post to cover her purchase price...somewhat similar to threads we've allowed in the past where someone will have paid the fees to get a dog out of a shelter in the hopes of rehoming it or a person who has "rescued" a horse on their own at some point in the past and is now trying to rehome it.

Though the OP hasn't requested it, we can't support fundraising efforts for non-501c3 efforts, so we can't support threads used to drum up financial support for someone choosing to take on a horse or pony in a Giveaways situation. If someone wants to take on this pony, that's terrific. The thread shouldn't be used to drum up the financial support to do so, however.

We understand how that type of a dynamic can naturally develop from a circumstance like this, in a community like ours, when presented with an animal in a crappy situation, and that's why we may need to clarify our policies further in this regard.

Thanks again,
Mod 1
