I'm looking for an OTTB companion horse. Mare or gelding doesn't matter, but it must be an OTTB and it must get along well with other horses, not studdish or witchy. I prefer something youngish with a career-ending injury/condition instead of something older. I won't consider any horses outside of New England because I need to meet it before I take it home.
I have over 30 years of experience with horses. This horse will live on 20 acres of field (no easy keepers, please) with a bedded run-in shed and will have a stall for inclement weather. I currently have one horse (an OTTB) but there will be more horses here in the near future. Once I own an animal, it is with me for life and all my animals get the very best care.

I prefer something youngish with a career-ending injury/condition instead of something older. I'm looking for a kind, amiable horse that has "run out of options" and is unable to have a working career. Check Canter NE.. They of course have some that I'm sure they'd be more than happy for you to meet that are in their foster system.

You can also check the Giveaway forum right here on COTH or the list of free TBs on thehorse.com (http://www.thehorse.com/Horses/Available.aspx). There are around 100 horses listed on that site, mostly OTTBs.

Is NY too far to travel? There are several horses I am sure either through FLTAP, NYHR or Rerun that would suit your needs very well....

She'll know who fits the bill for you! Good luck - that is wonderful that you are considering an OTTB companion horse.

I'll third that -- get in touch with CANTER New England (http://canterusa.org/newengland/). They will know horses that will fit the bill. Fostering is an option too, providing you meet approval requirements. I've fostered for them before and it was a very positive experience; they were very easy to work with.

Barring that, if NY isn't completely out of the question, there are plenty of Paragallo horses that are in serious need of an owner upgrade.

PM me if you'd like Lorita's information at Suffolk. She is the frontline when it comes to horses needing a place to go (sometimes even beasties that don't make it to CANTER simply because she's a trainer and at the track every day), and I'm sure she'd be thrilled to have another option besides filling out TRF apps or asking CANTER to find room :yes:
