Who here is getting excited? I am! The entry list looks great! What a wonderful list of competitors. Last year was the first year my husband and I went, and we had a great time. This year we have decided to drive down from CT. And I just got a new horse, so I am getting my shopping list ready. I can't wait!

I'm going to try not to shop. Is that even possible? Maybe I'll leave the credit cards in the car and only take $50 with me.

SOOOO excited about this year's Rolex!!

I'm having to restrain myself from shopping now, so I can fully enjoy Rolex.

There's a bunch of stuff I want NOW! and I'm finding self control is very difficult. But Rolex is more fun if you're hefting around several bags of good stuff :)

Me! I'm excited. I'm dragging my husband with me this year. I'm afraid that's going to really cut into my shopping as he doesn't think I need anything.

I am so excited! I just got a new horse--I'm talking a few days ago, and I'm in love! Last year I remember I saw some gorgeous padded halters, so I'm definitely picking up one of those. He has skinnier legs than my last horse, so I may need to get him some boots. And since we are driving down, I can load up on all the cool grooming supplies, freebies, cheap supplements, etc! Last year was fun, but it was mostly American riders. I'm looking forward to the competition this year. Should be fun!

I don't have a new horse, but am getting ready for my first ever actual event (omg, did I just say that out loud? on COTH? Does that mean it's official?) So naturally I need some coordinated gear. :D

I'm looking for a nice pair of leather open front boots for stadium. I have the Dover leather open front boots lined in neoprene with the elastic straps, but they are too wide. I measured his legs, and they are only about 8" in circumferance. I don't want to spend a fortune. I just ordered a bunch of Eskadron boots from a German tack store since they are half price (I will never buy Eskadron in this country!), and I know they will fit him since I already have a pair.

I cannot wait! My shopping list is quite small this year, just a new bit, a show shirt, and some grooming stuff. If I see a great deal on something else, I will probably snatch it up, but I live near some great tack stores now, so I don't have to wait until Rolex to get my hands on all the things that I covet!;)

I am really excited about the entries this year, I think it is going to be amazing to watch!

I'll be saddle shopping.. kind of... more like saddle trying lol. My boyfriend is also coming with me... he actually asked to go (he said he 90% wanted to go and 10% felt obligated lol)... and I'm sure he'll never ask again after this year since I plan to sit in a ton of saddles this year lol. He asked if they had non horse stuff there too? I was like it's at the Kentucky Horse Park... its a horse event... with horse people... other than like beer tasting and the random non horse booth EVERYTHING is horse related lol. We'll see how he does....

My husband is not horsey and goes every year - wouldn't miss it. He finds the whole venue relaxing. Well, on Friday he is going to visit some distilleries :) while I shop and watch dressage, but he'll be with me for the cross country and the stadium jumping!

My SO went with me last year and had a good enough time that we planned on coming this year!

Although most vendors are mostly horse related, most have things that any outdoorsy type of guy would like. My SO bought a new custom hat and was beyond thrilled.

Don't have a huge shopping list, but I ALWAYS end up buying something. This year, though, it may be rolex shop stuff for friends. Esp. if they have the discount tent (last year's leftovers)....! I'm coming early...I LOVE watching everyone train on T/W. It really does teach you a lot.

Consider packing stuff for lunches (bagels, pretzels, etc.) because the food court can take a real "bite" out of the cash. Though the waffle ice cream sandwiches and chocolate-covered cheesecake-on-a-stick may be worth a little splurge.

Rats!!! She is only like 15.2H so she might fit. How bout I buy her the seat next to yours?? My mother did that when she flew with her Chihuahua (a la Paris Hilton) to SC 2 weeks ago.

I bet she even has her own frequent flier miles :D

I could meet you at Hobby (or is it Intercontinental) either way. Yea! My very own 4* pony to play with :D

Have fun and take a pic of her for me, if you can't snatch her.

Also, have fun @ the JW clinic!

Yeh, Saturday, the one day that you can eat all the carbs you want! :D Take water bottles (bloody marys! whatevvvaa...) I take hummus and pita chips, raw veggies and some fruit (from the continental breakfasts). A bagel to gnaw on is a must. A can of iced coffee is great too. Save the cash for the necessaries! And dinner later with friends, the sit down and daily rehash is the best.

I'm bringing my boyfriend to Rolex this year - he's a horse owner but owns TWHs and has never been to an event like Rolex before, so this should be a real eye-opener for him!

OH. MY. GOD. They have cheesecake on a stick?! I'm a goner.

Luckily the $200 I budgeted for shopping is JUST for shopping. My hotel, gas and food were budgeted in a different account (Dad's $300 in cash as an early bday gift was a big help with that one!). Although we are still planning on packing our lunches and saving as much cash as possible (not to mention our waist lines  I have a carribbean vaca in May, I CANNOT put on 10 lbs in one weekend ;))

I'm getting more and more excited reading all of this. I used to show at KHP 4-5 times/year when I was on the AA H/J circuit but haven't been in two or three years. I can't wait to see it again.

last year my husband and I went to Walmart to stock up on drinks and snacks to take with us. We split a panini for lunch--so that was like $9 for the two of us. I have to say those waffle ice cream sandwiches were awesome. I can't wait!
My #1 thing to buy is a padded halter. I remember last year there was a vendor called Equestrian Classics (who will be there this year) who had the most gorgeous padded halters, all different colors, and very reasonably priced. And they had the engraver there too. So my new horse is getting (hopefully) a dark brown halter with light blue padding. Lucky boy! I also need some black waxed braiding thread, so I'm hoping to find that at Bit of Britain.
Last year I was looking for a dressage saddle, and I sat in almost every single one there that interested me. I lucked out and found a used Devoucoux makila that I had shipped home. Fortunately it fits the new horse!

yippeee!!! So excited about Rolex!

Last year I was the Rolex Virgin. This year I'm taking my mom --- ROAD TRIP!!! And, I can't wait to go shopping. Right now I'm riding in broken half-chaps because I'd rather wait and buy them at Rolex. Plus, I"m now leasing a horse and *need* to update my grooming box, tack, etc... It doesn't hurt that he's a draft x and all my previous horses were OTTBs - so nothing fits him well!

Hooray for Rolex!!!! I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that this is a GOOD year for the sport.

wow. this is really bizarre!
What terrible memories you just brought back to me! lol.
Sorry to mention them.

I bought Luci (Boomer sister) right before Rolex.
She was REALLY nice, could have gone really far.
I dreamed about what she would have looked like at the jog. I *almost* bought her one of those halters you are talking about and had planned on measuring her huge noggin and ordering one when I got home. I wanted the black one with tan lining.
I dreamed of jumping into the head of the lake and crapping my pants over some of the ditches on course.
I bought her a fleece works pad for hunter shows and a purple polypad for home fun.

a month later she was done, totally washed up, old injury soundness issues once training started, and I traded her out [with my dreams and a huge hunk of my heart] for my dorky grey horse.
As great as he is--and though I probably came out with the better horse--he'll never fill her 4 shoes.

Hope you have better luck than I did! lol. sorry to be a downer.

The pack/chairs I've seen have pockets in them as well for storage.

Usually, I just carry a backpack with a rolled-up picnic blanket. When I had my Rottweiler, I'd bring him to the event and he wore his own green backpack. He carried my wallet and keys, bottle of water, and plenty of "pooper-scooper" bags. It always irritated people who acted like they didn't notice that their dog was taking an enormous dump (:mad::mad:). . .I'd casually ask if they were out of poop baggies and then hand them one of my extras.

I did write a very strongly worded letter expressing my serious annoyance. I would have done GA, but I still like having the tent and parking pass just enough to spring for the equestrian club. Although that tend isn't exactly going to be near the ring and trade fair this year, which makes me doubly annoyed, though I guess it will work really well for XC day- fillups of food and water without really missing what's going on on course...

Hahah Nope that's life at the KHP. When I showed on the AA H/J circuit year round you would need a winter jacket and fleece breeches to hack in the morning, you would be in a short sleeve polo by noon and by four you would need a 100% waterproof outfit and be frantically digging trenches to keep your stalls from flooding in the down pour . What is the eventing Grand Slam? Isn't it Badminton, Burghley and Rolex? Or am I confusing them with other 3 days?

It is Badminton, Burghley and Rolex but they have to be won consecutively. Example: win Burghley in fall of 2007 and then win Rolex and Badminton in 2008 or any combination like that.

Lucinda & Brit won Burghley in 2006 and Badminton in 2007. In order to also win Rolex, Lucinda would have had to have a different horse to enter there. Badminton and Rolex are just a week or so apart.

That is how Pippa Funnell won the Grand Slam. She had 2 different horses. Granted she won all 3 4*s in 2003.

Jalepenos on New Circle I have heard a lot about. I need to try it myself.

You'll recognize me there?, I'm the one that looks horsey :lol: something about horse people, you can pick them out in a crowd. There is a look, a type ... maybe it's the weathered faces, the wisdom in their eyes?? We've even recognized fellow Rolexers in the bathrooms at the truck stops on the way back home. Just by their boots under the partitions :D after a weekend of rain. Now it's the really nice fancy tickets hanging from their jackets. Also the tired but happy look on their faces. It's like a pilgrimage, a mecca of sorts. A big happy club of just-as-crazy-as-yourself people. I always marvel each year at how amazing the crowd is there, esp the brave families with wagonfuls of young kids! Very peaceful and organized. A lot of pros at how to 'do Rolex' on hand (some very serious shoppers). I have been going since 78 and it's definitely a once every year special weekend treat.

Oh yes, Jalapenos is great! I am also a big fan of Malones, but I don't think that's really on the more reasonable side. I do like the location at Hamburg that has Malones, Aqua Sushi, and a sports bar in one building- you can order from any of the 3 menus from each restaurant so I like being able to get a Malone's steak and coconut pie in the sports bar :).

I'm always excited for Rolex because it falls on my bday every year. I think I'm even more excited this year because I've been out of the saddle lately due to injury, and really have missed my horsey time.

Last time Bruce was there with Jam I missed dressage and then he retired on course xc before getting to where my friends and I were. So, I hope this year to get to see the pair!

General Burton was listed as chief steward on the prize list. Does anyone know if he's still on for that?

And when will they post the order of go?

A question that I've wondered about--what sort of quarantine do the foreign horses have to go through for Rolex?

Giuseppe's is a little Italian place that is a little nicer that is my absolutely FAVORITE restaurant in the entire world. Their gnocchi is to die for. It is located on Nicholasville Rd just outside Man O' War.

I'm so jealous! I wanted to go so bad! (I used to live in Lexington and it was sooo easy to go every year!) I was all set to drive up from Dallas on Friday, watch XC on Saturday, and then drive the fourteen hours home to Dallas on Sunday....but I realized that I have a physics exam the following day. And that means a lot of hours of studying. Which I can't do if I am driving. And I can't afford to fly.

So bummer. :-(

I don't know the real answer to that, except to say it's very cool to see them in their roped off separate barn with their flags.

So what's everyone's favorite restaurants to eat at while you're there? This is my 3rd year going but I feel that we are missing some good places to eat at night. Looking for affordable though. I am going to be the "food" person for my group!

I haven't been in a few years now, but my group always went to Furlongs. IT WAS ALWAYS GREAT! Although it has some New Orleans flair, it's not entirely cajun food. There is a crabmeat au gratin appetizer unlike any I've ever had, and I would LOVE to have some RIGHT NOW! You can check out their website -- www.furlongs.com

You definitely want to make reservations (ANYWHERE!), and a word to Rolex newbies -- you may want to do your "nice dinner out" Friday night, because you could be too tired after XC Saturday to do it up!

Is anybody else a bit miffed about having to purchase additional tickets for stadium and dressage? Even with the 'good' tickets, you still have to purchase tickets.
I remember when Rolex was sort of affordable!
I'm still excited to go, but I'm hoping they change the policy next year as it's leaving a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. 475$ for a ticket and no stadium seating? Ewww.

I really, really considered going this year -- after a few years' hiatus -- but I just couldn't bring myself to pay that kind of $$$. I agree TOTALLY about still having to buy seats. It sure makes that parking pass and tent ABSURDLY EXPENSIVE!

But, MAN, I sure do miss that SHOPPING! <WHIMPER>

I am so excited! I just got a new horse--I'm talking a few days ago, and I'm in love! Last year I remember I saw some gorgeous padded halters, so I'm definitely picking up one of those.

I ended up ordering a custom padded halter from a place called Cleaver with Leather that was at Rolex. LOVE the halter... however they do run a tad small. My girl normally wears a cob with her dainty head, however the cob I got her is pretty tight on her.

Try some of the restaurants in Midway- it's west of KHP near Exit 65 off I-64 and has some excellent restaurants- Heirloom andThe Black Tulip are in Midway and the Holly Hill Inn is north of Midway. The Black Tulip is mostly a sidewalk cafe but also has indoor seating and the Holly Hill Inn is north of Midway just off I-64 (get on Rte. 421 NW bound and take a quick left onto N. Winter St.). All are pricey and reservations are in order. Her are some websites:

We always go to Keeneland, but in the afternoon, after we watch some dressage and do some shopping. I think my guy needs one of those padded halters this year, too. :D

And for the person that was asking about the backpack/seats...they are really pretty handy. Not the most comfortable to sit on for any length of time, but perfect if you plan on going from jump to jump. They have a nice outside pocket for stuff that you need to keep handy, like rain ponchos, sunscreen, kleenex etc. They also have (at least mine does) an insulated pouch inside that works really well for keeping your water cold. And they are a good size to keep a few snacks and hold your sweatshirt after you warm up in the afternoon.

We also cut costs a bit by bringing sandwich fixings and eating out by the car, where everything is handy and we don't have to carry it around with us all day. It's also nice to have the sandwich stuff on hand in case we're too tired to go out to eat in the evening.

That's what I wanted to know about the backpack chairs. I always carry a small pack with typical Rolex goodies, but some years it is just too wet to sit on the ground. (not that we do much sitting....mostly running from jump to jump).

I can't wait!!!!!

It's all academic for me this year, since I am just going on Saturday, but it is a little bit off-putting. Especially since in the past all of the ceremonies (retirements, awards, etc.) are conducted facing the sponsors in one corner of the stadium so that the participants' backs are to the entire rest of the stadium. Minor, but symbolic. Perhaps this will change with the new stadium... I hope... it does leave a bad taste in one's mouth, especially if one has spent almost $500 to be there.

We left them behind in our big move from Md. to Ky. We could meet ya in Lexington. Sure would appreciate it! PM me or call 443-370-8350. I will arrange to get the shields to you.

Top three could be Nicholas Touzaint and Hidalgo de L'ile, Bettina Hoy and Ringwood Cockatoo, and Headley Britannia in any order. Don't forget William Fox-Pitt, who is going for the second leg of the Rolex Grand Slam.

I'm not looking for Americans to do very well this year. :( It could be like that year (200?) when Buck Davidson was the highest placed American at 5th.

Headley Britannia :D

Why not? She's already won Badminton, Burghley and Blenheim.

I always buy the cheap tickets because I can't afford even the bottom level VIP tix.

but when I saw they were charging the VIP extra for the seats I couldn't believe it.

totally crazy. at least they should have buried the $$ into the VIP tix and not charged ANOTHER fee for the seats. if I had been a person buying the VIP tix before I'd have passed this year.

because, in spite of all my planning, my tickets, secret shopping stash, it appears that I will be hobbling around on crutches the entire week. I really need to think up something more exciting than "I fell rollerskating". My M.D. made FUN of me. I told him that it simply didn't occur to me at the time that I'd fall. Or maybe I'll just get a wheel chair, hey, you push, I'll carry your stuff.

I'm older than my doctor who said he'd just had his 39th birthday (baby) and "there are just things he doesn't do any more". This is really the first "age related" reality check I've ever had. So I've missed two clinics (one was Denny's) and spent $$$$. My husband hasn't yet told me I need to stop riding, but he did put a moratorium on pre entering clinics and is now making me send all entries in on the last possible day. Of course I already entered May Daze, so I might have a problem there.

Your hotel can give you directions to Keeneland...but it's off of Versailles Road. Pretty easy from a downtown hotel, or even from the KHP.

Keeneland meets in April and October.... If it were me, I'd go on Friday after the dressage is done. Post time is 1:05 I believe.

Yes, your Rolex admission includes admission to the rest of the Kentucky Horse Park. It's nice to be able to "break away" from the event crowds and stroll through the rest of the park. . .though I sometimes need someone there to tear me away from the shopping or I will browse all day.

I was lucky enough to go to college in Lexington and have been going to Rolex every year since graduating. I found a fun way to keep my costs down for the show. I volunteer with Central Kentucky Riding for the Handicapped and drive golf carts during the event. It's an absolute BLAST! You meet the nicest people and get to be part of something special. There are some pretty respectable perks for volunteers too. If you go this year, ask around about volunteering. It's always nice to give back!

You don't even need to get one from a doctor-- just call the EEI office and explain that you need a disabled parking permit.
