My Jack Russell, Indy, ran through the wrong paddock today at my farm job and the teaser stallion got a good stomp in on him... at first he seemed fine but dazed but then he quickly crashed and went into shock. I got him to the emergency clinic and have spent the last 4 hours there.

There are no broken bones or obvious internal organ damage, but apparently due to bruising or damage that can't be seen on the xrays, he is bleeding into his chest cavity. There is not much they can do but give him fluids, oxygen, and painkillers, and keep monitoring the pressure in his chest, removing blood from the cavity and transfusing if necessary.

They are hoping that the injury will clot on its own tonight and Indy will be able to recover eventually from the damage but it's really hard to call at this time. They will be phoning me at about midnight to let me know how his red blood cell and protein counts are holding up, but no news is good news otherwise...

Please keep my little dog in your thoughts, I don't want to lose the rotten little beast, he might actually make a good dog one of these days!

OH no! I hope he is feeling better in the morning.
I had a BAD DOG grab one of the cats on friday. I have her on antibiotics and she seems ok, but I worry that that will change. Some injuries do take a while to show up :(

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers, I am just tore up right now...

Teaser Chester is the only dog aggressive horse out there at Shelley's, Indy is usually very good at not getting into the horses' space, but he ran through the corner of the paddock and Chester got after him and got him scared and stomped him before he could get out *sigh* We were minutes from leaving for the day, too!

I'm so hoping he pulls through this, I love the little monster despite his critterin' and chewing!

Picked up Indy this morning from AA Emergency clinic. He passed the night fairly well and managed to sit up a little on his own and looks a teeny bit brighter. His breathing is still labored, but it didn't sound quite so bad IMO.

His red blood count and proteins at midnight were the same as before so he wasn't getting worse overnight in terms of blood loss, though he did have a bit of a nosebleed last night and finally showed some more obvious signs of concussion.

Got him to his regular vet this morning who looked at the xrays and says Indy has a collapsed lung which is what probably caused the blood in the chest cavity. Dr. Castle did say that 80% of dogs heal up and eventually air comes back into the lung. So Indy is staying at the vet further with fluids, antibiotics, painkillers, oxygen, and later more xrays to make sure his diaphram is not herniated.

Here is a pic I snapped of him this morning:

If he survives this, I'll be sure to drag the photos out often to remind him of his follies!

Thank you all for your continued thoughts and prayers!

My thoughts are with you. I just had a dog go through a two week stay at the vet's . . . you probably are already doing this, but I found staying with my dog as much as possible helped him know he wasn't abandoned. Obviously Indy knows he wasn't abandoned, you've been with him, but I found staying with my dog made me feel like I was doing EVERYTHING I could to help him get better.

I know what you are going through. Take it one step at a time, and know that there are many of us pulling for him.

Indy is breathing better today and is currently off oxygen

I did get a little tail wag when I went to see him this morning :) Just a little one, he was very quiet and subdued. Course I'm sure he's in pain and lack of oxygen makes him weak, I've had pneumonia so I can relate! But he enjoyed some chin scratches and leaned into them. I also took him his Nylabone and a fleece toy that smells like home. He's not in a chewing mood, but I wanted to give him some familiar things while he is away.

They want to keep him long enough to make sure that his diaphragm is not herniated and I'm told that can take several days to show up. He may be home in a couple more days though, I think. He'll be on cage rest for some time after that until everything is working again.

Indy hadn't eaten yet as of 5pm close today though, so I've been asked to bring some of his own food tomorrow and try to get him to eat that with me present. He's been on fluids so he's not going to waste away, but he's got to start eating normal soon. I think I'll also take his own bed to him since I'm going. He'd got plenty of towels there, but again, more of "home."

Again, thank you all for your kind words, virtual hugs, thoughts, and prayers... they really mean a lot to me!

Vet called me this morning to come pick him up!

He is eating, showing more interest in things, and can take medicine orally now so I just got back from picking him up. He has to go back for a check up in a week and he's got the ok to travel with me next weekend to TN- it's the better option than leaving him home without my supervision- boyfriend Eli will be working doubles and my teenage son Jesse is not the most observant soul and wouldn't be able to get Indy anywhere if something went wrong. At least we'll be with "Auntie" Heather next week and she's the puppy medical professional ;)

For now he is to be kept still, either cage or room rest and leashed to go out. Right now not a problem as that whole breathing with one lung thing is wearing him out. But the vet thinks he will recover better on home rest :)

We don't know about long term soundness yet (in other words, whether or not he'll be able to continue SAR training) but the vet says as long as he recovers well, it likely won't be a problem. That's something we'll revisit after more recovery time, of course.

He was tired after the drive and saying hello to Fred so he's taking a nap in his own crate on his own bed. He popped right in the crate and sniffed the bed as if to make sure it really was his own house LOL

Thanks all for your continued positive thoughts for Indy's full recovery!

Glad to hear the good news. I am also owned by a rotten little JRTerror. When I first got him, he thought it was great fun to chase horses while I was either riding or lunging them and grab onto their tail. One day the "perfect" thing happened: He miscalculated and got "rolled" underneath my big WB. He was OK, but learned his lesson.:cool: Fast forward to about a year ago when I almost lost him. He dug out under a fence to chase off some coyotes and got ripped apart stem to stern. :( It was bleak and I thought that his spirit was broken for the first week I had him home. UNfortunately (lol), it wasn't and I have to say that he'd do it all over and even has a renewed zeal for "killing" those darn coyotes. Sooooo, my point is don't think that yours learned his lesson. He *may* have, but then again....he's a JRT. Healing vibes sent your way! :)

Thanks for asking how my little guy is!

Indy is looking more alert, but right now he is just lounges about his bed until I ask him to go outside. Sometimes he does not want to do the four steps down to the backyard so I carry him down. He totters around the backyard like a little old man instead of trotting around in the quick and happy way he normally does :( I know he will eventually be fine, but it is hard to see him like this, he's such a young dog!

Keeping him calm right now is not a problem, he still feels too punk to do much more than go out and come back to bed. He eats little bits here and there, but not much at one time so I keep it in front of him. He didn't even want treats today so you know he feels bad!

How's little Indy doing? I sure hope he's feeling better!

Thanks for asking!

Indy is doing really well, he seems to be feeling so much better  His breathing is pretty good now, about the only way you could tell is that he doesn't quite have his usual energy level. He is getting stronger every day, though. Trots around the backyard getting into things and showing interest in the squirrels who tease him from the tree :D

He jumps on the bed to snuggle quite happily and curls up under the blankets... I think he is milking his invalid status  But then he is extremely upset with not getting to go places right now.

He has a vet visit on Wednesday to check his progress. I do think the vet will be pretty happy with how he's doing :)

My favorite story regarding the tough fighting spirit of the JRT is from a hunt book. Pack has fox holed up, huntsman sends the doggie down the hole while the pack is still swirling about, JRT pops up into the middle of the pack, OOPS WRONG HOLE! The pack jumps him and he gets torn up pretty badly before the huntsman can whip off the hounds. JRT standing outside the pack gets a bead on the one who gave him the roughest treatment and jumps back in for some more! I love JRTS, I have a feisty boy myself who I love despite/because of his ways. Glad to hear yours is well on his way to making your life a misery/joy. Rough coats are so cute!

He is too cute for words and I'm glad he is on the mend. Gotta love that face.

Our JRT (yes, Terror is a good description) loves cars and trucks and has now elected, with my help, to sleep in my car every night. I don't ask her why.

She will be seven in June and will start to settle down now, right? Right? Uh, right...... ?

Well, we just got back a little bit ago from the vet check up and the vet says Indy is just fine  His lungs sound the same on both sides so that means his lung has reinflated on it's own!

Indy is in fine spirits and is now acting like nothing happened to him  I'm so happy to say that this has had a good ending!
