OK - I should have been paying attention. But I never renew my USEF membership prior to January 1st. I just went online to renew my membership and in addition to the $110 for my individual membership and H/J fees, it appears that the USEF now wants $75 per horse for some registration. I could also cough up $200 for a "lifetime" registration. I have two horses - grand total $260 if I go for the yearly horse registration - $510 if I go for the "lifetime" registration.

Please...someone enlighten me as to just what I get for this amount of money for the privledge of showing at a recognized show. Am I the only one who thinks that the USEF is now over the top? It seems like every year they come up with another way to attach more fees to the cost of showing. What will the USEF come up with next year to fee us to death? I feel like I should bend over now...:mad:

Question...does anybody know...do other disciplines, such as Morgans or Arabians, for example, have to pay an additional discipline fee such as the $55 that the H/J people are required to?

If not, how do they get away with that? Shouldn't fees be equitable across the board? Silly me...never mind.

Yes, AFAIK everyone has to. In Saddlebreds, for example, see USEF Rule SB 101, Eligibility: All ASBs have to be registered w/ ASHA and the exhibitor/owner must be members of ASHA in good standing.

The whole reason for starting USHJA was that H/J was the last remaining discipline that did NOT have an affiliate organization standing between the competitors and USEF. So in that sense, you got what you asked for: the formation of USHJA was what MADE it equitable across the board. ;)

I seriously wonder about an organization that requires a "sub-organization" being necessary to "stand between the competitors and the USEF." Do we need protection, or something?

I pay $55 for USEF, but in order to show I have to join AHA too, so that's another $50.

Oh, lest I forget...my local/state organization decided this year that if you want to particpate in their approved shows (and all of them are), you must also belong to that organization to the tune of $100 per year plus another $50 to sign your horse up for year-end points. Ka ching...

That $55 is not a discipline fee that is your membership in the USHJA a separate organization. There are no discipline fees for the USEF for H/J.

If your horse is annually recorded with the USEF you are eligible to particpate in the Horse of the Year Awards, nationally or Zone. If you don't feel you will be going to enough shows or don't want to participate in HOTY or Zone you DO NOT have to record your horse. The online ID is still free, you only do that once. If you don't pay your horses annual recording fee the number reverts to an ID only. If you have a new horse and get an ID number for a horse via paper and snail mail it costs $10, but if applied for online it is free.

So the LEAST amount you need to spend for 2009 for you and one horse is
USEF - $55
USHJA -$55
USHJA Horse Registration $30 (one time fee)/ per horse
USEF ID (if the horse doesn't already have one) and do it online $0/ per horse
Total = $140.00

Seriously, don't you get insurance coverage with the membership fee? If so, that is worth a bit.

Where it starts to get ridiculous is if your horse is cross-disciplinary, like a hunter who events or plays dressage, or like mine, who is cross-training for Carriage Driving and ASB Hunters. That's all those fees x2!

I have to admit I really don't see the need for the one-time USHJA registration fee. I don't see why y'all should be paying for them to set up their database.

ETA to Lawndart, you only get secondary insurance - meaning you have to have a primary carrier. It IS still useful though!

That is why I became a life member of the USEF in 1991(I'd been an annual member since 1972) , and the USHJA since its inception. My horses are life recorded as soon as possible, the last one was 2 when I bought him so he was recorded at a discounted rate. I didn't have to pay the $30 for the USHJA because he was life recorded with the USEF already and was grandfathered in. I pay nothing for memberships to the national organizations.

The only one I pay year after year is the local organization.

Ok, discipline fee or membership in in the H/J...same diff.

I called the USEF to clarify...they informed me that the recording/registration fee was $75...they said nothing about a $30 fee. Remember...I have two horses, so double everything other than my $55 membership fee in the USEF and $55 membership fee in the H/J organization.

The $30 fee is to a separate organization the USHJA so there is a "dif" and it is going to cost you. That one you must pay.

The $75 recording fee - you DO NOT have to record your horse with the USEF either annually or lifetime if you do not want a year end award. All you need for both of your horses is a Horse ID and that is FREE if applied for online.

Don't do the annual USEF recording get TWO free Horse IDS on line. Pay $30 per horse to Register them with the USHJA

You - $110 for memberships.
Horses - $60 total for USHJA registration and $0 for applied for online Horse IDs from the USEF.

No where does it stipulate that if your are showing in Hunters or Jumpers or Hunt seat eq that you must annually record your horse.

The free ID is still free if you apply online. It is $10 if you apply via snail mail.
