I think he had a good ride later in the day so he must have been OK?
I remember the Subway horse, it was a nice second half for them.
How did the rider that fell during Prelim end up? I saw the ambulance go up but didn't hear anything else. I hope all was OK.
Lovely day overall.

Bruce came off Cruise Lion at second to last fence...hit his face on the horse's neck as he went off. He sat there for a bit to catch his breath (think it rang his bell pretty good) and then went back to barn. He looked great on Jam an hour later.

They checked him out while he was on the ground and deemed him lucid. I left before the advanced SJed so I don't know if he rode or not. When I saw him he wasn't dressed to ride, but it was probably about 2 hours before his division was to start. He and Jam both looked great on XC. I can tell you that he was bound and determined to get on Jam no matter what!

And the purpose of the one-fall rule is what exactly?
At The Fork everyone who fell was required to be checked by the medics prior to riding again. The was a system in place; the medics were given a list of everyone to be checked. The XC warmup stewards were also given the list and informed by the medics of anyone who had not been checked. As each person entered XC warmup, they were directed to the FEI Chief Steward, Sally O'Connor, for verfication and to get permission to ride.
I spoke to Bruce, briefly, in XC warmup on Jam and he was smiling and talking coherently. He probably was in serious pain, but he certainly wasn't letting anyone see it.

My hubby and I watched the I, CIC***, and the A stadium today - had to drive back to Lexington so had to leave before P started. (We were x-c fence judges yesterday at the "Sunken Road" for the *** and A, and did fence #12 for I and #11 and #12 for P) The stadium course was quite difficult with very few clear rounds. Buck had a great day with his first place in the *** and second in the Advanced division.

Muck r us, I'm not criticizing protocol at the Fork. It's always good to hear that protocol is being followed with consistency and concern. :)
I spoke to Bruce, briefly, in XC warmup on Jam and he was smiling and talking coherently. He probably was in serious pain, but he certainly wasn't letting anyone see it.
Natasha Richardson was laughing, talking, etc after her accident. She had a skull fracture; Bruce had some facial fractures. Both types require a significant blow to the head.
I pretty much thought the purpose of the one fall rule is to not be allowed to continue THAT PARTICULAR RIDE. It makes total sense to me.
Well, yeah, that's what the rule says. So it makes sense in that sense.
But does it make sense to have a rider with facial fractures taking more horses out on course? Like I said, a facial fracture requires a significant impact to the head and a fractured nose/cheekbone/jaw can also lead to serious airway compromise.
And why does it 'make sense' that he can ride Jam and not the horse he fell from? Are you statistically more likely to fall off the horse you just fell off of? As an EMT, it makes no difference to me which horse you were riding when I need to transport you.
I also noticed that one rider at the Fork had two falls -- one at I and one at P -- and still completed on a third horse.
If you're ok to compete, you're ok to compete. The name of the horse shouldn't matter except for scoring. If we claim that you're not safe to continue after a fall, you're not safe to continue on any horse. That makes sense to me.
For the record, I don't support the one-fall rule as written because it simply is not a safety rule except for those riding only one horse. Most falls do not result in significant injury and I think British Eventing has done the right thing by using their data to repeal the rule in the UK. But if we're going to have a one-fall rule and if it's going to be under the guise of safety, let's actually make it about actual safety, even if it inconveniences some of us.

Not to derail the conversation, but I noticed that too - Although the rider had 4 rides and placed well in the 3* and also completed on another horse in Prelim. Maybe the horses were a little green for the level or something? I wonder what happened...

But I guess I'm saying, DURING a xc round, when time is of the essence, there is much less time to determine whether someone is "ok to compete", right? Isn't that what the rule is for? Preventing someone from remounting and finishing immediately?
I mean, would you rather someone was out for the ENTIRE competition on every horse, for one fall, no matter how simple? Imagine the hue and cry over that rule?
I don't want to derail this thread rehashing the one fall rule, but it seems to me there is no one easy black and white answer. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

This makes a lot of sense if your overarching priority is to protect human lives. Hue and cry? Maybe. This will only affect the 2%ers who ride multiple horses AND happen to fall, but those 2%ers will certainly pitch a tantrum, for sure. I imagine Darren will be livid.

I stated my preference in my previous post. However, if this rule is actually going to function as a safety rule, it has to apply to all of a rider's rides.
As for the hue and cry, bring it on. If a rider has to think twice about how many horses to ride, when to move up a horse, what horses to run where and when to find non-eventing job for an unsuitable horse -- shouldn't this make for a safer (albeit less lucrative) sport?

I completely agree with JER. I do not support the one fall rule. I think those that do support it, should think about the implications of taking a rider off one horse, but letting them compete on another. IMHO, it is an all or nothing issue. Either you are unsafe to ride or you are not. Either you support the rule for one fall and you go home or you should not logically support the rule.

We went for the CIC. It was the most gorgeous weekend - perfect weather, perfect footing, beautiful venue, wonderful volunteers everywhere - and it would have been the perfect setting to have a great run. Unfortunately, I tried running in a new bit this weekend and it didn't work as well as hoped. We retired early on in the course after it became apparent that, while my horse was jumping the fences well, I had little steering - and no left turn - between the fences.
So, instead of firming up (old, I'd thought/hoped dead) bad habits inside his head, "Zoolander" and I retired.
It was disappointing not to complete, of course, but it was more disappointing because this bit change - out of a gag, to something more subtle - didn't work. He'd been running well in the "bigger" bit and I thought we'd used that bit as a tool to help brake the cycle and fix those old issues. Disappointing to see that wasn't the case.

NeverTime - I was sorry to hear you'd retired. Better luck next time!
I second the applause for the event: they do a tremendous job and even with the downpour on Thursday night, hardly any issues getting trucks in or out of stabling. The courses were amazing, and the footing spectacular - by Sunday morning, the turf was springy and just about perfect. Lots of horses looking very pleased with themselves, and the tracks were thoughtful enough to require good riding and separating out the scores by a pretty good margin while leaving horses and riders much more educated than they were going out.
Small comment: I do think they mis-measured the preliminary track by a big amount: when folks are finishing a minute early on a 5:17 course and just about everyone makes the time, I suspect the course was exceptionally generously wheeled. That aside, Jim Cogdell and his crew really do everything right at this event and they are incredibly gracious and obliging hosts. The Fork is always one of our very favorite events, and even waiting around until almost 5pm to show jump was worth it!

NeverTime. :( Sorry you guys didn't complete. He looks like a great athlete and it sounds like you made the wisest decision to save him for next time. When's your next one?
It really was a beautiful weekend all around... the courses and the facility have made it a definite favorite for us, but the weather and the great volunteers and abundance of fine horses just made it a wonderful weekend... it was an ideal place to be in that space and time.
I saw Bruce after his ride on Jam and he was shrouded in a big smile. Who'd have known he'd shortly before broken his nose, etc.? Anyway, if you've been eventing that long, it's a given that 1. you know how to ride and 2. you're darned tough.

If only said dressage score hadn't been so completely god-awful! Of course, when the judge blows the whistle and stops you halfway through to tell you that you've made an error, then stops you again and say "Oops, my mistake, you were right", it does tend to interrupt the flow. Though given the attack of equine spazmosis that we were going through (wind/fit horse/shortened warmup/semi-incompetent rider), there wasn't all that much flow to begin with. Sigh. At least he redeems himself pretty spectactularly to the jumps.
