View Full Version : Nickel or brass on the new bridle?

I'm going to buy a new bridle for my pony. I've decided to go with the Nunn Finer figure 8 in havana (to match the saddle). I've got a choice of nickel or brass. The pony is buckskin. Should I go with brass or nickel? The saddle has brass dee rings.
I've never had brass on my tack (I even had nickel on my harness!)....definitely more partial to nickel, but I think the brass would look pretty on the pony man.
Any thoughts????

Totally up to you and what you like, but I have a very pretty bridle that has all brass fittings that I have LOVED on my couple of pretty bay TB boys.

Brass... as long as you are willing to polish it. I hate dirty brass, but polished brass is so purty

I'm gonna say nickel. I'd do brass on a dark bay or black horse only, but that's just me!

Do I have to polish brass every time I ride??? I have the cleaner/polisher stuff from having a harness - but like I said I had nickel on that. I would agree with nickel on my grey....but I thought the buckskin - with golden coloring - might look nice with brass.

My grey actually looks pretty hot in his brass browband, so don't think they can't look good in it. Unfortunately, he's got a funky shaped and size head, so he's never fit in my cob bridle with all the purty brass.
I do NOT polish my brass every time, but I do try to polish it before every show. Some people who have more time or care more than I do might. If you do it halfway regularly, it stays pretty nice.

Brass looks great on anything, but it looks particularily nice on buckskins and duns and chestnuts, especially in the summer when their coats are all glossy.
I only polish mine for shows.

I had all nickel on my dark bay, but like the brass better on the chestnut.

I have a Nunn Finer in black with nickel to match my dressage saddle and then I have a havana with brass to match the jumping saddle I will hopefully get sometime soon. :D The brass is beautiful!

I like nickel unless the bit rings are brass/some other yellow metal.

I went all out with brass for my xc bridle and it ended up being too much to polish-but I had buckle ends and also a brass/havana breastplate. Maybe if the bridle had hook end studs then you're just polishing the browband and cheek/throatlatch pieces it wouldn't be too much. I think since my bridle also had brass fittings on the figure 8 it just ended up being too brassy for my tastes! Just something to think about.

He DOES look nice. One of our two palominos has a brass browband. He looks fantastic (we got a dress the little guy up somehow!).

I like the look of brass, but I hate when stuff doesnt match, and my saddle and breast collar have nickel hardware, so my bridles need to as well. Plus I like the nickel to match the stainless bit, then all the shiny stuff matches.
ETA the hardware on my girths and everything are nickel too. Matchy matchy!

If you're worried about your bit matching, AlBaCon makes a german silver bit that has a brassy hue to it. Not totally brass, but it's not glaring "silvery" colored either.
