I will be headed down with my friend! My last novice run before moving up to Training with my young horse and my friend is running prelim. It was my first time there last fall and I loved it! Great event! I can't wait and will be back again in the fall doing Training and my friend doing Intermediate! Good luck!

I am not going this time. =( I decided that I was going to focus on getting my gelding qualified for the QH world show in the Ammy and Open Jumpers so we are just focusing on QH shows and H/J shows to work on my stadium. But hopefully we will be there next year. If the pony doesn't sell by then, I will for sure have him there.

Me! Hopefully anyway. Husband's horse is currently working through an abscess, and my young horse was off for a while as well. They were both fine until we sent in our entry.
This will be my first recognized, first ride at HH, and the first novice for the baby. It's hubby's birthday so he talked me into riding instead of being his groom. LOL
Now I'm a bit imtimidated about choosing to move up at a new place, and at the recognized level. I realize it IS novice, but still, every move up is UP.

I do wonder what the xc courses will be like. Last fall it was a pretty challenging novice: irish bank, bank out of water, open/hanging log out of 2nd water, little sunken road. lots of fun though!!

I'll be there in the Prelim. I can't wait to see if there are as many wildflowers out there as last year, and hopefully Jim Stoner can get some pretty pictures on XC going through them! I've heard that they are changing up the XC courses quite a bit, so even though I've only run Prelim there once, I look forward to the changes!

Last spring was my first time there, and my, oh, my....they let the red clover grow wild, then mowed only where the paths to the jumps were...it was like riding on a red carpet! Worth the entry fee just to get to ride through it!
The owners said the let the clover go to seed, so it should be beautiful again.

Holly Hill is my fav in Area V.
I love Carsten's SJ courses also.
except spring last year he put in this MEAN combo.
The triple was very scopey with some big square oxars. (really fun with big air time) Then on a 5 stride slight bend he put a flippin' vertical with no ground line. Like 5 colored poles with a white pole on the top. The area fence is also white and they literally looked one in the same when you looked down the line. Interesting enough the fence never came down.

:( I WANT to be there... this would be only my second HT, and I was going to take my super-ready mare novice... schooled all the novice and training there in Feb... but, being new to this, didn't know that one could send off the entry sans-signatures and still be accepted. I tried to be good, and held onto it until I could get trainer's sig... So I didn't get mine in until a week or two after opening day. (This was after having them filled out 3 weeks early.) When they first posted the registration statuses on the website, I was like- DOH! Apparently I could have sent it without signatures. It filled up so fast! On the first wait list, there were 19 people, and I was one of them. There's about a million on the waitlist now, but it looks like 9 have scratched... so theoretically, I should be in the first 10, right? Or is the waitlist by division? In that case, I have no clue how far down I am. :(
Since y'all have more experience... think I'll get in?
I'm really hoping, as this was going to be my one HT this spring and I felt really prepared after schooling there. I could still do MC in May instead, but entries open Tuesday and I don't want to send entries there and then end up getting into HH. I'd like to know for sure first. I can't really spend the money on both. But then, if I waited to send entries, I might get stuck on another waitlist... Waitlists make me nervous- can you tell???

You'll get in.
Usually in the past there have been a good 20 on the wait list and everyone usually gets in.
I hope you can go!
Yes, you can send in entries that are not complete but you should not. ; )
It's really sad that HTs have to offer prizes for those who send in complete entries.
shrug.

Yup! I'm going to be in Open Novice (ha! Good thing I'm going for the experience and not the ribbon) and stabling across at the track. Still waiting to see if another girl from my barn got in. If not, there will be just 2 of us, stabled a million miles apart! I'm a weenie adult (at 25, I'm practically ancient for my barn) and need the experienced kids around for moral support. Hopefully some COTHers will be around the track stalls to keep me from freaking out. :)

Only 2 more weeks!! Can't wait to show again! I was very lucky to have my horse in FL for the winter and she did Ocala II with my trainer and I did Rocking Horse III with her, but it still feels like forever! Especially because every single xc schooling here has gotten canceled because of the rain. One last shot this weekend! Fingers crossed!

ARGH! I hope that it doesn't rain, especially because the dressage is on turf! I can deal with the rest, but my horse HATES doing dressage in the mud, so Meadowcreek was a loss and then the footing at Pine Hill dressage was so deep that I think it reminded my horse of mud and wigged him out. So if I have a third one in a row with mud/deep footing for dressage, my poor pony is going to develop some bad habits!
I am glad the forecast is still five days out and I will hope that it changes!

If the rain does come just remember.
If the ground is bad push for impulsion. The more force you trot with the harder your horse's feet stick in the ground. When you are timid and back off in the DQ phase your horse trots lighter and is more likely to slip.
Got that from Sally OC and Jim Wofford.
My best dressage test there was two years ago in a foot of water. I put in my pointy studs and rode for glory.

Apr. 16, 2009, 10:07 PM
I only have a 3 hour drive, but if I don't get out early it may not happen! In the last week, Mare and I have dealt with extreme stiffness from vaccines, choke (and vets apparently don't answer phones on Easter), ridiculous hotness from a change of feeds (threw that feed out real quick), swallowing hay twine (don't even ask...), getting loose and running down the road (again, don't ask!), a farrier that didn't show up today (I told him I had BETTER see him at sunrise tomorrow!)... and then when I went and picked up feed tonight, I got a couple bales of hay for the weekend, and on the way home the gas can busted and I had to throw out all the hay and all but one bag of feed. So now I've double-checked tires and breaks and hitches and everything that could possibly go wrong on the drive, because I'm obviously having bad luck this week! Hopefully all the rian will wash that away!

By the way I'm SO jealous of everyone stabled in the indoor arena ;) I'm out in the red barns...oh well.
You could have been stabled 1.3 miles away at the track. While the atmosphere was nice and quiet (especially at night, when light switches were impossible to find and the place was just plane CREEPY), the idea of trailering back and forth did NOT work out so well... ten minutes before my dressage test, I was trying to pull the truck and trailer out of the quicksand! I swear, at one point I was both clean AND prepared! By the time we entered the arena, not so much.
And then there was the actual test. Started out real nice, but on that first diagonal, when I hit X, the giant lighting bolt sent my mind into overdrive... "Oh my gosh! Do I stop?? Are they going to stop me? If they make me stop are they going to let me go again?? Probably not." By the time I hit F, my mind had reached, "Oh man, I had better hurry up and get this over with!!!!!" The judge's scribe could have used a rubber stamp that said "tense & rushy."
I'm still looking for good excuses for my stadium round. Let me know if you can think of any.
On the other hand, I DID complete my first HT, at Novice no less. May have ended with a 106 or so, but we made it. Next time, I hope they have oxygen tanks waiting at the end of XC. Whooooey that was terrifying! You guys ENJOY that torture?? I only made it through the last half by chanting under my breath, "This is supposed to be fun. This is supposed to be fun. This is supposed ot be fun."
Oh, but being at the track did get me the number of a trainer who has some prettttttty horses coming off the track soon. Mmmmmmm.

I have only competed there a handful of times but the last time was 1997 (no laughing please) and we were stabled across the street at the track. It was REALLY relaxed and peaceful! We hacked over to the grounds and that was great too. The horses were settled and ready to work when we got there. Of course, it wasn't raining buckets that time either. Do people still hack over?

Archieflies, I have no idea how you could figure out when your ride time was, we were fifty feet away from the rings and still had trouble with all the changes going on. I'm just grateful they went "on with the show" considering how the weather was fluctuating. Sunday certainly made up for it though.
This was my first recognized and first time competing at HH, and I FELL OFF! Yikes, I was so embarrassed. Never in my life have I felt so loose in the tack, but my pants, gloves, and saddle were just ice slick and I was tired from driving through the monsoon. My poor baby, I was apologizing to him out loud as we went around stadium. LOL We are going back to beginner novice for a while.
My hubby bought my dream hunt coat for our anniversary, and on the maiden voyage it got dunked in the lake at the end of the ring. The dry cleaner lady kept saying, "what IS it", and I'm so tired from the weekend, I kept saying, "it's a RIDING coat, you know, like horses". She meant what is the stuff all over the coat, ie MUD.
Husband did great though, he finished seventh with The Diva. He was the one wearing the viking helmet cover (with permission) for cross country.

I only know of one other person besides me who hacked over. From what I understand, they used to get stalls towards the front of the track complex. Those were all full, so they had to get us stalls way, way, way at the back, all the way around by the starting gates. The muck pile did have a nice view of the river (hubby didn't mind carrying poop with that view). I was glad for the chance to loosen up on the hack, but the road was SLICK, and the grass on the roadside was so soggy we were sinking to the fetlocks!

Despite the rain it was a successful weekend! My horse and I finished 5th in the Novice Horse division with a 31!
The horse in front of me went in and was circling the dressage arena and they called it. So we went back to the barn for an hour and had to re-warm up in the pouring rain. Though we did have a good test. A little rushed which is something we are always working on! XC ended up being great! I was worried about the footing, but it was not bad at all. Hey girl - Since y'all were curious. I got Bounder Dec. 28 2007. We bought him from Stephanie Judkins, a race rider, from LA, around Holly Hill! He had been sitting in a pasture for a year and had done a LOT at training level including one preliminary before I bought him. My coach, Mike Huber, competed him for me for the first half of 2008 because I fell off of him in a fluke accident two weeks after I bought him :(. He's the coolest horse, most fun I've ever had! I'm very lucky to have found him.

from Stephanie Judkins in CA. She ran P with him.
Mike rode him for 6 months first. But I believe I heard that Jessica had a rough accident and popped both her ankles in half leaving part if one in a galloping field? yuck. Isn't that right Caneycreek?
He's yummy! Ol' Roanoke has some competition. My heart pitter pats for two boys now. LMAO.
That's all correct except that Stephanie Judkins is from Louisiana.

yes, that is why Mike was riding Bounder, she did a number on her legs in a very flukey accident, but she worked hard, recovered quickly and is now back 100% !
I love watching the 2 of them go, great team!

HA! Funny you mention the competition between Ro and Bounder LOL! We've been neck and neck all season at every event. Bounder gets better dressage marks most of the time (won 3 of 4 tests against Ro) but Heather is obviously a million times better then me so she usually ends up kicking my butt overall!

Jess- He is sooo nice!!! I heard about your fall but never put two and two together. Duh!!! Good reason why Mike was riding him.
Kristen- thanks captain obvious! Of course as soon as I posted it I went and looked at USEA and by the time I got back to COTH you had already posted.

AW Thanks!!! He's really fabulous. Dressage has been his weakest phase, he's full TB and he's built like one. But he's a nice mover with a lot of prescence, smart, and super willing so we're getting there with the flat work. Over fences he's super straight forward. Brave and careful. Really - Any of my kids back in Arkansas could jump him as long as they could hold on!

Well, Ive actually been a member for a while. I just don't usually post in response to anything. But since y'all were talking about Bounder I thought I'd help answer the questions and fill in some gaps :). And Yes, Bounder and I are doing the CCI** at Colorado and also the CIC** at Greenwood. Then hopefully Advanced at Maui Jim in July. I'm excited!
