I was really hoping for an OT day today, I hope this is not TOO OT.
I am scheduled for a wisdom tooth extraction next Wednesday. I lost a filling in it a while ago, and a couple weeks ago it broke. It is now (naturally) excruciating. That's the earliest they could get me in--waiting on cancellations in the meantime-- but I also felt like I wanted to take the day after off too, (just in case) and after Thursday I already have several days off both vaca I already took, and normal scheduled, so if I can hold out a week, that is best.
At any rate... simple extraction, will not be put under. However it's bottom jaw, and a wisdom tooth.
I had an upper molar pulled about a month ago now, and it went ok. I planned ahead for no chores the afternoon/evening post-extraction, and easy chores the following day. By the third day I was back in action and fine--just a little more careful.
Where this is not 'surgical' do I have to worry about anything different this time? I have someone for emergency back up chores, but as long as I can get by on minimum/light work, I need to not use her, it's a hike and I don't want to abuse the privelege.

How stressful!! I stress out way beyond the normal person when it comes to the dentist ~ even a cleaning appointment makes me panic. I had both top and bottom wisdom teeth pulled (at different times). I was a nervous wreck before the appointments, but it was over in minutes! No pain, just the annoying wad of cotton in my mouth. I had no problems from either tooth and didn't require any "down time". The anticipation of the appointment was waaaaaay worse than the aftermath!! Good luck to you!!! It will be over in a flash!

I had mine out years ago (20+), after waiting and waiting due to all the horror stories I heard. I was put to sleep but must say that the pain afterward wasn't that bad at all. I did end up taking one or two of the painkillers prescribed, not because I couldn't stand the pain, but I tended to focus on the pain, if that makes sense. I didn't have horses then, but I think I'd take care picking stuff up and bending over after you have them removed.
Yes, the gauze/cotton was kind of annoying...

Have a Plan B, in case things go south. Modern Dental practices are greatly advanced from the past, but sometimes your individual teeth may cause problems that are not common. Long roots and lower jaw problems were mentioned several times in advocating EARLY removal with the kids now. Mentioned several possible problems with nerves, sizes and locations, because not all people have them in the same places.
Daughter had all hers out while still in the "bud" stage, no roots to speak of at age 14, but buds were sideways, not going to come in correctly, jaw too small. Even then they wanted her kept quiet, packed the holes left, no swishing of liquid for several days. "Just drool the rinsed water out" was the direction to prevent losing the blood clot over holes, creating the dry socket problem.
She was pretty blah for a couple days, had the weekend to recover. Take the pain pill as directed, to stay ahead of pain, until you are sure you don't need them. She didn't want any by Sunday, after Friday work. She got chores off, didn't want her wobbling around out there! Son had about the same experience when his wisdom teeth were done, but procedure took longer with his more developed teeth roots, age 16yrs. He was done 10 years before she was, Surgeons were not doing the younger kids yet then. He was just out of it and blah for a couple days, slept a lot with the meds. Again, just kept him quiet for that time.
You should have someone to drive you home after, check up on you after getting the dental work done for several hours and the next day. I needed one tooth pulled, split top to bottom, had to go to a specialist who said a local would be fine. Swore I would NEVER have anything like that done again without a General anesthetic!! It was terrible.
Hope your work goes smooth for you.

I had ALL of my wisdom teeth out at the same time. I was blessed with xtra wisdom in the form of supernumeries(sp?) So I had 2 xtra wisdom teeth. I was knocked out for the procedure, but I had zero problems post extraction. The two things I found most dist tasteful about the experience was the constant taste of blood and the odd stitch coming loose during dinner. I was eating spicy food the day after the extraction, no bruising no swelling. Amazing as that might seem. I still have the teeth. To remind me how wise I once was;)

Hey PP :)
I had a lower tooth out in November. It wasn't a wisdom tooth, but the one in front of it.
Here's the post I made at the time which got a lot of helpful answers. :)

I hope you're soon feeling better and that it goes smoothly. :)

I've had two of mine out that way- simple extraction with no general anaesthesia, in a regular dentist's office... and it was fine.
I may be more pain tolerant than most people but I was up and walking and doing all my normal stuff right away. Had the second one done on my lunch break and went back to work with my face still numb. All I really needed was some Advil for the first day.
Granted, my job isn't that physical, and I did notice going to the barn later that I could "feel" each step I took in my mouth, but I was still able to feed and clean stalls and all that stuff without being miserable.
I think being put under, and having them removed surgically because they're not fully in or straight, is a much more painful procedure and requires more in the way of painkillers after. But a regular extraction of a fully formed tooth, without all that- my guess is it won't be a big deal.
I was actually surprised by how small a deal it was for me, after seeing so many friends suffering after having theirs out... (and also considering my incredible dentist anxiety)

I had mine out this morning. Dr. gave me Lortab 7.5/500. I'm also taking Motrin every 6 hours. Tonight, I'm in 0 pain with very little swelling. I did barn work today after the appointment and will be showing tomorrow at an "A" show. So, no, it didn't slow me down at all.

Thanks for the info & encouragement--Kooki, that thread was really helpful, thank you! Luckily I read it last night... April Fools on me--a day late. Tooth was pretty badly infected. I went in this morning to hopefully get some antibiotics to get me through until next Wednesday... and *~surprise~* came home a little less wise.
It was up into my sinuses/ear, so she really wanted it out today. After last night, I said, um... <sigh> Sure.
So much for planning... I just did hay while everything's still numb. My nose won't stop running on that side, and my face is HUGE and starting to tingle... Will head in for a nap until the stupid novacaine wears off so I don't chew my tongue off.
The good news is I'm on the 2nd half of the round bale, so no real heavy pushing or fighting with that... bad news is water isn't on tap 'till next week, so I do have to lug water tonight. Should be fine by then. It went fairly well--toof brook halfway through, but I got a get out of jail free card for today AND tomorrow, then my normal day off Sat'dy. Don't have to work until Sun'dy day and I can lay low there for the most part if needed. So not the worst thing.
And I really don't think (hope?) the extraction pain is going to be as bad as that horrible, pulsing, dull-then-excruciating-stabbing pain from the half-broken tooth was. ;)
The good/bad part is it's supposed to be cold and rainy the next few days--good excuse to lie low and not feel guilty... a waste of get-out-of-jail free note.

Doc told me upper was easier than lower...figured the other way around...
Gratz you got one less head ache now! :D

Glad I could help! :)
Pain from an infected tooth is the worst thing ever. Yuck. It makes your whole body hurt in reaction. I'd rather have a broken bone than another infected tooth.
Really, don't feel bad about chilling for a few days. The last thing you want is a dry socket, which are just nasty! Take your meds if you need them, and relax. It'll heal faster, honest!
I didn't have any pain when I had mine out. I thought I was going to because my jaw started aching when the novacaine started to wear off, but it didn't hurt at all. I think I just have a weird reaction to the novacaine TBH! ;)

I had a lower wisdom tooth out this winter and the area did hurt for about two weeks. Nothing like real dental pain (I had an infected tooth once and oh, nothing made that pain go away except a root canal), but it was quite sore and unhappy for a while. In my case, though, getting the tooth out involved gouging my gums and inner cheek, so part of the pain was those bits healing and some stitches. My dentist has an antipathy toward powerful painkillers, so she just prescribed large doses of ibuprofen, and that worked fine.

Um, is today 'day three?' or day two?
Is it normal for today to be worse than the day after?
Granted, I've not POUNDED the anti-inflams. Had some, about to take more.
I'm having what would seem to be 'phantom' pain--it's aching the way the infected tooth ached... is that normal?
It's filled in really well compared to my last extraction, though less today than yesterday... yesterday the 'hole' felt filled up to the top. Today is a slight depression. There are some cuts and issues with the gums I expect to be sore... but I'm having sort of a jaw thing... like when you have something really sour that gets your jaw... ???
Tomorrow's Sunday, I have to work days anyway... can't really DO anything until Monday... but just wondering if this is normal or if I'm headed toward dry socket... :uhoh:
On the bright side, I've lost 6lbs. Most of which, I know was from drugs and infection and water... but yogurt and bananas don't really have ALL that many calories either. :p Now, if I'd lose 60 more, I'd be GOLDEN...

OK I can see why someone would write this to make it a little shorter, but

This?

There are justas many characters and the apostrophe should have been between the d and y, anyway.

When I had my wisdom teeth out (all 4, not erupted, so a bit different than yours) on a Friday, the worst day for me was Monday. So yeah, the increasing pain is possible. I rode Saturday and Sunday, wanted to die at work Monday.
My pain was a dull ache, throbbing, pulsing, made worse by changes in altitude, bending over and sneezing.
Regarding the hole, mine filled, went down and back up to "normal". I think the first fill was a trauma thing, swelling went down and the area truely filled.
Hope that helps - I hear you on the pain, I cannot take any pain meds cause they make me really sick - Advil and ice were my friends.

 Just an affectation from days long before this board... ;)
It's shorter on Sat'dy and a few others... and just habit on the rest.
Thanks PC, that helps. I guess probably the fact that I've had about half as much NSAIDs might have something to do with it too... I was very aware of it yesterday, and not so much today.
I have this feeling day shift tomorrow is going to suck. :uhoh: But as long as it's not busy I can lay low and surf the 'net on high speed.

Yeah, but would it be worth having to have TEN more extractions?

How are you feeling now? Mine never really hurt- though I did get some throbbing in it now and again, mostly when I got my pulse up.

IME, I was surprised (not happily) at how long it took to feel better. I was expecting there wouldn't be any physical discomfort after the first day or so, but it was really sore for a little over a week. I think it's because the whole jaw, not to mention the soft tissues of the gums and inner cheek, are traumatized by an extraction that far back in the mouth. I took about 800mg of ibuprofen twice a day (dentist prescribed) for about a week to control the soreness and pain, and it really worked.

Absolutely, positively, indisputably NO. :dead: In fact, I might just vote for root canal vs. extraction. Maybe.
Vacation, you're right on the money. Today wasn't horrible... Sort of overall sore--but damn if I didn't work up a freaking bone splinter! I think that's what was feeling like 'phantom' pain.
I was distracted enough by a busy-ish day at work... but came home and practically collapsed. So much for daylight savings time.
Thanks to everyone for the hand holding. We (coworkers & I) decided I am much too old for this wisdom tooth nonsense, and I'd really rather not do it again, thanks. I'm a weensy bit still worried about dry socket, but I guess if I get through tonight ok, I should be home free...
I think the worst is past, and it's now just sore. I'll live, 'eh?
