Zootoo.com's $1 Million Shelter Makeover Contest Shines Spotlight on the Plight of Homeless Horses
GLENVILLE, Pa., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue has made it to the "Top 20" in a $1 million shelter makeover contest sponsored by Zootoo.com, a web site for animal and pet lovers.
"The Zootoo.com contest has made more people aware that American horses are ending up on dinner plates in European and Asian restaurants and that homeless horses are suffering terrible treatment and a horrifying death," says Jo Deibel, founder of Angel Acres. "We just finished a new video to help educate more people so they take action to help stop this practice." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kctnqRBBd4s&feature=channel_page
Says Deibel, "We've had media outlets all over the world from New Zealand to Japan cover this so whatever happens with the contest, Zootoo is helping to stop horse slaughter. We're grateful to Zootoo.com's founder, Richard Thompson, for helping to shine a light on the issue of horse abandonment and horse slaughter," says Deibel. "With the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes fast approaching it's a great time for people to discuss this further."
The Zootoo team traveled to all Top 20 shelters in March including Angel Acres, to assess needs, community support and best practices. The next step will be at the April 7th Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) Animal Care Expo in Las Vegas when the Zootoo team will name the top 10 shelters for public voting April 13-19.
"Then, if we're selected, it's all up to America to vote for Angel Acres from these top 10 and decide who will win the million dollar makeover," says Deibel. "Angel Acres has a unique spot, just two horse rescue shelters made it to the Top 20; good Lord willing, we make it all the way. I know if the horses could vote they most certainly would...their lives depend on it."
Angel Acres Horse Haven Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit rescue dedicated to saving horses bound for slaughter for human consumption. Angel Acres also assists in cases of neglect and abuse. Thoroughbreds are rescued from kill pens and adopted into loving forever homes. All adoption applicants and horses up for adoption are screened thoroughly.

I'm thrilled that Angel Acres has made the top 10, they deserve this and I'm also very proud of the wonderful folks at COTH that helped them. Also because of the invitation to help AA in the ZooToo.com contest I submitted an article for the Nokota horses and they called me a month later and wrote this article, YIPPEE!! So many animals were helped because Jo took action to help horses and wasn't shy about asking for help.

Can you tell them about a few more good stories??? News articles, 2 written by noted sports journalist at the News Journal in Delaware, Jack Ireland http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20090315/SPORTS09/903150370/1030 & http://www.sparkweekly.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090315/SPORTS09/903150370/1002/SPORTS .
When you do good, others are blessed. Jo did good, and sought to do more good and many others were blessed.
Here's the press release for this walk for horses:
Press Release for Immediate Release:
Walk Across America for Horses
Kristina Kremer age 32 from Capulin, CO is walking across the United States to raise awareness about the plight of the American horse. Kristina and her husband are truck drivers and operate an animal rescue including 120 plus horses. She is surrounded by the Colorado feedlots and sees 3-4 tractor trailer loads of horses leaving for the slaughterhouses in Mexico every week. She sees this as a great American tragedy. She has a heart to save horses and has taken up the cause and her sneakers to walk across America to let people know that horses are being mistreated at an alarming rate and in extreme. She is willing to have an honest dialogue with anyone and is currently in Washington, DC waiting to meet with Congressmen and has 1,200 letters for Congress and the President from all over the country and including many from children. Some of the children's letters have hand drawn pictures of horses.
Kristina was not the person who was planning to do this walk, as she has a family and obligations at home. However when the original walker, Eric Wilson from Circleville, OH crashed his bike and severely broke his ankle and shoulder requiring immediate surgery there was only one person left who would be willing to do it. Kristina, a determined woman was not deterred by her lack of preparation say, "We'll find help along the way". Her monies go to care for her family and her animals so she came with less than the bare essentials including her only shoes, a pair with holes in them. This did not dissuade her from coming to Newark, DE to begin her walk as scheduled. The News Journal covered this story, written by Jack Ireland, a prominent sports journalist in Delaware and followed the story the day of the walk with a photographer to document the start. Her walk was followed by Susan Pizzini of West Grove, PA in her pick up truck with signs stating, "Walk Across America for Horses" with flowers, American flag balloons, and purple ribbons which is the color used for horse welfare.
The walk proceeded to Fair Hill, MD where the famed equestrian park of over 5,000 acres of rolling hills and acclaimed Fair Hill Training Center, where Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was trained. Tragically he was fatally injured at the start of the Preakness. As a truck driver, she had made deliveries to the Fair Hill facility and Kristina was pleasantly familiar somewhat with this location. After a visit the following Monday to the New Holland sales auction for the horse sales, she returned to pick up the walk going to Washington, DC where she is staying nearby as a guest of Freedom Hills Horse Rescue. She will continue the walk after their adoption day event on April 4th in Owings, MD. She hopes that people will make appointments with their
Congressmen for her and call her at 719 580-0374 with the contact information for the Congressman's office to firm up those appointments.
Kristina would like to get the 1,200 letters to President Obama with a promise that he will see them after sharing them with the members of Congress so they can see the support behind her mission.
Kristina needs support along her route, please call her at 719 580-0374 if you can help her with this walk. Her mission is urgent, her cause is noble and it can only be successful with the help of horse lovers across America.

Do you have groups set up on other sites, like Facebook and LinkedIn? You can join those sites, start a group, put in links to your website, and information about the voting. Many of us here on COTH are on both sites, and we can recruit our friends to join your cause by joining your groups and sharing the information with our non-COTH friends.
Congrats on making the top ten!

I'm pretty sure that Facebook has an Angel Acres group, but Jo would know for sure, I just don't get there that often but I did see a COTH group. jodeibel@aol.com
Walk Across America for Horses was supposed to have one, but I can't find it.
Madeline Pickens has a group too and so does the Nokota horse. We should probably cross link all the groups.

What you should know is that COTHers played a huge role in bumping her into this position, so every COTHer who helped her can give themselves a big pat on the back! Thank you for what you've done to help the horses. Because in the end, we're not helping an organization or a person but horses. That's what it's about so I thank you for helping them.
God Bless Angel Acres & Jo & company.
