Lily was found on the road. According to Lori, she is probably 15 years old, was probably ridden in her current condition. She is missing an eye which is infected - and the eye was not surgically removed. The picture of her eye is too dark to see. But look at her body condition.
They are hoping to find the scu.., I mean, person, responsible. For now, she has seen the vets and is at Lori's, and and least, for whatever time she has left, she will be free from hunger, pain, and fear. And she will be loved.
That is just awful. God bless Lori for taking her in. Poor girl. :(

Jingles for Lily, hugs for Lori!
I've had a couple come in here that looked like that, they now look and feel great.
It's amazing what a little TLC and good food and hay will do.

I sincerely hope the mare manages to survive this appalling cruelty now she's in new ownership.
Fingers crossed that they manage to bring the previous owner to account in court and better still that they may suffer a life of lonliness and misery and a plague of festering painful boils on their private parts.

You are right but I want instant gratification. Let's find the guy who did this and give him a head start. Oh wait, do the Heydons have any relatives near Lori?
Georgia has misdemeanor statutes but also has an animal cruelty statute that provides for sentences up to 5 years. Only a few judges have given stiff sentences, one a non retired ex-DA then judge in Gwinnett, and a still on the bench female judge in Dekalb.

Poor little girl. :( I can't understand how anyone could do that to an animal.
Sending a few jingles for her because she looks like she needs them.

Oy that poor mare!
But she's at the right place. Heart the Hinny was in worse condition when Bird4416 and Lori brought her back to SKA....today she's a plump, opinionated hinny that loffs Dumor treats

Update on Lilly. I am in LOFF with her. Oh my Lord what a sweet mare she is. She was obviously someones trail mount, the nails are still in her feet. LIkely, she was thrown out for winter pasture and barely made it. Actually, the vet is wondering how she could have. My hand can disappear in her back end. Pics really dont show the weight issues. They never do. Plus she has a long winter coat. This is the first horse I have ever heard air go through. The skin on her legs hangs and swings from lack of meat and muscle. The first couple of days we had her, we had to go way out to the pasture to bring her in to eat, of course, that was foriegn to her. She has it all figured out now, knows where her little heaven and safety is. I think I have a little diamond here. If she stays sound, some kid is going to have a gem here. She needs some major dental work as the vet says a good portion of her teeth are loose. The eye needs cleaning up in order to look better and prevent further infection in the future. My guess is she has been in some sort of accident. Maybe a tree down on her or something. No owner is looking for her (guess they are not riding yet) but if they do, they will be charged.
On a sad note, we are overfull. Dept of Ag is not counting the kids here, she turns a blind eye. Great gal but..................if anyone wants a perfectly useless but absolutely lovable friend, please consider adopting one of ours. If all you have is pasture and are willing to take one home for just the summer, please, we have several perfectly healthy old folks who require only a grooming and loving, no special diets. I will gladly take them home for the winter.

Gosh, wiping the tears.
More I see the more I hate lots of people.
I don't understand I just don't. What I don't understand even more is how these horses that have gone through hell, can love US. Talk about forgiving!
My heart goes out to you it really does!

I feel very special and loved, thankyou guys. But, I guess that is why I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do. these horses just plain old love us anyhow. What I have found over the years is that mostly, at one time, someone did love these guys. They were kind to begin with which is why they even reached the ages they have.
If we can get more people to take responsibility for the horses they breed, so that when they are no longer 'useful', breeders will take some responsibility for the animals that lined there wallet. Why cant they all be Laurie Races. Education is the answer and showing people where and how there horses end up.
On a good note, more and more people are calling me about doing the right thing for there friends and sending them to retirement homes. they deserve to live out there lives in dignity and if they could only see the smile my "useless friends" can put on the face of a hurting child, or a mentally handicapped adult, they would no that "useless" doent exist. Nonrideable is as close as it gets.
I dont have an old folk here who doesnt have a job, even if its simply to keep the grass trimmed along the edges LOL
It feels so good knowing that Lilly is tucked in safe, warm and fed tonight along with all the others while the winds whip, the rains pelt down and the thunder and lightning roars outside. The pain is over.

They are NOT useless. I don't have to ride my horse to derive so much pleasure from his company.
So glad Lily "found" you. And I hope she finds a wonderful forever home.

"Useless" doesn't exist.
Absolutely right. Thank you for taking Lily in - she kind of reminds me of Bram, my old fellow. He turns that shade of "seventies-era sofa" brown over the course of a season - he's pretty and almost black at the beginning, though.
He'd be that skinny, too, if he were just turned out on pasture, because of his teeth. We go through a lot of beet pulp at our farm.
But he's a very valuable horse - no amount of money could get him away from me. I bet you Lily will also become the light of someone's life.

Miss Lilly is bouncing back rapidly. I cant wait to see what her new coat will look like and what she can or will do. How does someone walk away from something as sweet as that horse I will never know. Cant wait to show updated pics. I swear she has put on 150 lbs in a week. You go girl

I for one can say with all my heart that the most "useless" animals I have loved in my life have been the most useful and wonderful creatures I will ever know. I hope and pray they continue to "find" me for the rest of my days because I wouldn't be the same without them!
GO LILY GO!!!!!!!!!
