View Full Version : Eventing COLORS!

Dramapony_misty

Even though my first HT is still along way off, I like getting prepared step by step.

What XC colors and color combos are most popular? Are there any that may not be illegal, but are frowned upon?

I just don't want to be that girl who rides up to the starter box looking like a clown (or a tool).

Consider this a colors roll call!

Thanks bunches!!!

what are YOUR favorite colors and what color and sex is your pony?
Do you have only one horse or will you be using these colors on many different horses?

That's my problem...I like TOO many colors! Navy, Hunter, Purple, Black, Silver, Red Turquoise, Lime Green... :-P

The one I'm using is an almost white grey mare (in my profile pic), but I also have a blue roan Appy gelding, and a chestnut Appy gelding which I may start if all goes well.

Its really all about personnel preference (who cares what other people think... this is YOUR day for fun)

For saving expenses: what color (s) is most of your equipment? and go from there

There really are an unlimited number of options out there... a lot of people go with a primary dark color, then accent it with a lighter-colored trim. For example mine are pink and black... because I don't want to be blinding fence judges with LOUD pink, I try to have mostly black equipment with an outline of pink (saddle pad is black with pink trim... black wraps w/pink tape...black helmet cover with 2 pink stripes, etc)

If you want to see some color combinations, I would suggest going to an eventing photographer's website such as GRC, Brant Gamma, etc etc and clicking through some XC photos.. that will help you see what you like/don't like

I used to do navy and lime green, but unfortunately, lime green and navy is a combination that was only made custom by one place and they discontinued the lime trim, so I think I am going to navy and mint green now.

Mint green is lovely!

Availability was the one problem I struggled with a little as well. This was before the color explosion - but I chose purple/black and what I meant by purple was violet, but sometimes I ended up with lavender. Or just black  So you might surf around and do some virtual shopping for colors you like -- I think most can be found these days, but some combinations may require more custom orders and therefore more $$.

Looking at event photo sites is a fantastic idea.

I know some people much prefer traditional, conservative color combos like navy/hunter, but personally, I enjoy getting a giggle out of some of the more outrageous ones, especially on the YRs. Like 17h Perch-Xs in hot pink everything!

I don't stick to certain colors. I wear black breeches, helmet and body protector and then match my polo shirt and saddle pad. My horse and I are very low level, so he just wears brushing boots for any jumping which are black.

I do hunter green with navy trim or the other way around too. I know, boring. I'm really starting to like navy, light/sky blue, and white.

My primary color is black with a green and yellow trim, which are the colors of the Jamaican flag. My horse's name is Jamaica, so of course it fits.

I just received my custom made saddle pad and helmet cover made by nagrags.co.uk. LOVE IT!

Hunter green w/ light pink. Used to be white, but my girlie looks pretty in pink...

As long as you don't go with a bunch of shades of one color (i.e. Hunter green vest, lime green helmet cover, mint green boots, sparkly green bell boots, and a kelly green trimmed bridle) or deck your poor horse out in blaze orange (it doesn't actually look bas on all horses, but I saw a girl on a red chestnut covered with the stuff) you'll look fine.

I also have an aversion to pink/orange/red on chestnuts. Especially pink. Some people do it, but it's just cruel.

So, process of elimination

White
Chestnut (no red)
Blue Roan (no silver)

Depending on how much attention you want to bring to yourself, no bright colors (no lime or turqu).
And also it helps to pick colors that you can actually find [easily] in equipment (no Silver).

Navy
Hunter
Purple
Black
Silver
Red
Turquoise
Lime Green

So there is what you have. And go from there. ; )

I'm purple and blue (usually navy).
Last year I cut it all out and made everything non colored mature. BORRRING. lol. but I like it.
I have lots of pics with all the color changes.

Here is the difference:

or with lots of white:

I think the bay/chestnut/roan can look really nice with tan breeches. (pardon my butt crack)

Looky what I found!
A pic of the bay horse with me in a teal/turqu shirt and blue vest. It actually might be kinda cool if you wore it on the low down. Good on all your three horse colors. Escpecially if the vest were navy!??

or deck your poor horse out in blaze orange (it doesn't actually look bas on all horses, but I saw a girl on a red chestnut covered with the stuff) you'll look fine. Sharon White rides in bright orange with some white and I think it looks fantastic. 'Course, if you ride as well as she does, I suspect you can wear whatever you want.

Otherwise, if you're not of that caliber, I'm not a big fan of neon or super bright, but don't mind them on kids-with-ponies, riders-going-to-their-first-BN, and re-riders-too-old-to-care, but it's really a preference thing. More important is that your tack fit and be clean and appropriate to the horse and level, that your horse be well conditioned and well groomed, and that you both be ready for the task at hand. I promise you that showing up in perfectly matching gear on an unkempt, dirty, unfit horse will garner you far more raised eyebrows than just throwing on a conservative polo over regular breeches and going around in your every day tack.

Colors like black, hunter green, silver, white, and navy pretty much look good on any color horse :) I have a light bay and we use black, green and white.
One brighter/louder color that seems to look good on any color horse is baby blue or turquoise - don't know why!

I don't know how old you are, but alot of younger riders tend to get bright EVRYTHING and regret it as they get older, so I'd suggest getting your big purchases (vest, horse boots, etc.) in a traditional, easy-to-find color (navy, hunter, burgundy) and then going buck wild with the little stuff that you can easily change later (crop, saddle pad, helmet cover). My colors are navy and silver/grey, btw. Remember, there will always be a person wearing neon pink and lime green, so just have fun with it; nobody will laugh at you! :)

There's a huge difference between carrot orange and I-hope-the-other-hunters-see-us orange. Sharon White never looks glaring or tacky, just orange.

I went navy because I didn't have my own horse when I picked colors, so didn't know what color horse I would end up with. I use burgundy trim and a touch of purple piping. Navy/Burgundy is easy to find and the purple is a fun touch. I've mostly ridden bays, currently ride a chestnut and think it looks good on greys as well.

I ride a completely bay horse. He looks awfully good in white... but I have a purple vest so my colors are technically purple and white. I tape his boots with purple duct tape... that's about all the purple we have.

I think subtle is best. ;)

I think my completely bay looks awesome in all black. I wear all black too with a little bit of red (helmet cover, tape...).

I think less is more but it is a totally personal thing....the horse doesn't care.

I couldn't find a bright green saddle pad so we had to use the darker one... I usually use a purple one at shows but I didn't bring it with me to that one! He also has purple boots which can't be seen in the pic.

The only problem with colors is that they become addicting!!! You'll find one or two that you want to use, and buy all of your stuff in that color.
And then, if you're like me, you'll find a blanket or halter that you just have to have but doesn't match your current colors, so you will have to go buy all new colored stuff. This is how I have 5 saddle pads, 3 coolers, 3 pairs of boots, and 7 halters. For one horse.

My recipe:

Get colors you'll like for a long time. That means choosing ones that will look good on any number of horses. They should look nice whether you plan on setting the world on fire or just putting milage on a baby for later.

Think about how easy it will be to find equipment in the colors your choose.

Consider the creating a contrast in your colors, whether your choose two or three.

I chose two colors when I started eventing in high school. Pickins were slim in terms of choices, but I put two common colors together than no one else did at the time. I added a third color, usually used for piping, much later. So many moons later, I'm still happy with my original choice and I have not had to replace my stuff but must look for excuses to add to it.

Blue and Yellow. Before my first event my coach pulled me aside and gave me the pep talk ( I was 7 ), she then gave me a great helmet cover ( it had belonged to her son). This was in the 80's so of course it was a helmet cover that had one of those huge cotton balls on the top. I LOVED IT, and the colors stuck. It use to be everything, I mean everything had to be those colors. However, lately I find myself going for the big items in black, and keeping the blue and yellow to trim work. By the way I still have that helmet cover- don't wear it, but it sure is a great keepsake.

Good luck. Let us know what you pick, and a picture would be great too. Best of Luck!!!:)

I don't necessarily agree with picking colors that will look good on anything (I'm sitting here looking at a picture of me in my red and royal blue on a chestnut. We look good.). Pick colors you like and are fairly easy to find (or can afford lots of custom gear), and go from there. My colors are my favorite color (red) and the farm's main color (the royal...which is high on my list of favorites, too). I has looked good on LOTS of horses. And while it can be a pain to to find really good red things, since most of what I do color wise was easy to get custom (a vest and a helmet cover), it isn't that big a deal. The Tiger and I in our colors- http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1086864&l=bc330ebb00&id=840606599 Note, the breastplate wasn't custom, just an awesome find. And, with a bit more red, on my old horse- http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=272917&l=440027bbc0&id=840606599

I tend to be a bit of a stickler for more conservative, so I do have colored pads, except for the occasional navy one. I really try to keep the color to me, the breastplate, and the occasional tape on the boots. BUT, that's me...I don't even like the dark britches that some wear on xc (but for some reason my yellow ones are A-ok!:confused:).

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=234100&id=1417392157

I would change it up with my saddle pads with usually having Navy with light piping. It helped that my pony club also used the same colors with the addition of silver.

Go with what ever makes you happy and feel confident!

ouch. I didn't have the heart to say that! but I have the heart to agree.

I'm really liking the teal with some sort of blue. I'm thinking that's pretty cool and it's not a broken record out there. Not the same'ol same'ol.
As long as you take it easy. Like pick a pad that is either white or black and do just the trim in your color/s. black boots with maybe one strip of tape. Stay easy on the eyes.

Wow! Everyone looks so great with such talented horses! Thank you for the responses!
I think I may go with black as a base color. I was thinking purple as I love the purple shade of the Tipperary vest, but I figure a black base gives me virturally unlimited accent options further down the road. :)

I love the pics though and this is so much fun! Keep them coming please :)

I had a friend who did black with purple. Most of her stuff was black (including her tack), but she'd highlight it all with purple. She and her big, good looking grey horse looked HOT in that combo. Of course, she's super model gorgeous, and he's really quite the looker, so I think they'd look good in a burlap sack.

Not that I have done EITHER of these colors yet (because we're just starting!)...

I have my buckskin in navy with baby blue trim (and white piping, in cases where piping is involved). I LOVE this color combination. I just ordered saddle covers from Tally Ho in these colors and they are beautiful! For xc I'll do a navy pad with light blue trim, navy and light blue helmet cover, navy with light blue polo. The "bulk" of the rest of my tack is brown, but the leg boots will be black (Woof) boots. My vest is black, too, but I'm not really in the mood to buy a new cover for it!

I have my dark grey mare in black with purple trim and white piping. She's only 4, so she has a few more years before prepping for xc!

My old guy was black with royal blue trim (white piping)....I used to get laughed at - haha, your colors are BLACK and BLUE - just like that bruise you got from falling off, hahahahaha:lol: Unfortunately it was kinda true.

I forever could not decide what my colors should be, so I ended up with pretty much black and white, because these colors are easy to find and conservative (although a bit "dressagy"). Now the biggest decision I have to make is whether to match my breastplate and martingale with the saddle (black) or with the bridle (dark havana) Ahh, decisions, decisions.... :D

Last year I rode a buckskin lesson pony from the barn with the same colors, and I agree that they do look really good. I rode in a navy vest, navy polo shirt, and navy pad with light blue trim, he already had blue boots. The colors looked really good.

Turquoise, black and silver. My now retired guy was a dun, and my current mount is a very red chestnut. Seems to look pretty good on both of them. Frankly, I never would have chosen that color had I not found the vest on a killer sale! I was at the tack shop trying some on for size, and I was told that if that one fit me, they would sell it to me cheap. Well, it did. And so, I was the proud new owner of a bright turquoise and silver vest. Hence, my XC colors were born! I actually try to minimize the turquoise everywhere else, 'cause it can get loud! I have a black pad with turquoise trim that I had custom made and I have black boots with a stripe or two of turquoise tape (yes, there is such stuff) Everything else is black. I wear tan breeches and normal tack. A little goes a long way!

Everyone keeps mentioning colored tape. Where would one find such stuff? I know Duct tape comes in some basic colors (black, white, blue, red, green, yellow). Also, what kind of tape is it? I would think that constantly putting tape on and off would be hard on the boots.

I am one who ODed on too much colour as a kid, and now I cant stand it.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=194216&id=292400180

So for a long time I just did black and white, but last year I wore some different coloured shirts, I have a few different t shirts and different rugbies, I like to swap it up, depending on my mood. I like the green on my chestnut, the bay looks good in anything.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=292152&id=292400180

I do suggest pairing a conservative colour (navy or black) with another colour, because then if you change your mind, you have all your essentials (vest, boots) in the more subtle colour so you dont have spend tons of money to change your colours, just the saddle pad and tshirt.

Also - make sure you choose colors you genuinely like (don't just match pony), because you will get goodies in your colors as gifts! My mom, who is non-horsey, knows this is EZ Mode for horse gifts - and I love it, but you will not love it if you pick lime green, and don't want to live day in and day out with your lime green sparkly currycomb, and your lime sponge, sweat scraper, bell boots...etc....

Hey, that's bright. But that is classy. There is a good balance with your outfit... I like that you stuck to the black boots and simplicity of your horses gear, and have just a few items on you that show your colors. In my opinion, that is a good look.

I started out with Hunter Green and Lime green then switched to Hunter and Mint Green. Now I am going a little more boring haha Hunter and White.

Figure out what looks best on your horse. Seems like greys look great in blue, blacks/bays in really anything, chestnuts pretty much anything though I am not a fan of a chestnut in pink, orange, or yellow.

I've always been pretty conservative. Hunter green vest, navy polo shirt, hunter w/navy pad, navy overgirth, and hunter and navy tape. I know kind boring, but i love the colors. and they look good on pretty much everything.

I've always wanted to do pink on horse, but felt bad about doing the to my gelding. However this summer I'm going to be showing my trainer's horse. I can borrow a black vest (and I bought pink laces for it), i'm keeping an eye out for a pink pad I like, and there's got to be somewhere that sells pink tape right? I know it's a bit overkill but I just found a pair of the pink rubber reins for cheap. I'll only use them on XC and I know my trainer will hate it, but I don't care. :D:D

I used to go with Navy/Hunter green but i thought it was a bit boring. I am now using Navy/Sunburst yellow. I know what you're all thinking

The navy is the main color and the yellow is the trim on my vest and saddle pad and one of the colors on my helmet

here's a link to a forum i posted on. It shows my colors. Just scroll until you find my username (eventerdrew)

Do people always choose solid colors for their polos (shirts, not wraps)? Just curious.

No I have a 3 colour striped rugby, and a red one with a big white stripe across it. My coach also has a black and white striped polo shirt.

My friend and I are a 'team' - Navy/Yellow. She wears yellow, because it looks good on her Dapple Grey, and I wear Navy, because it looks good on my Bay Silver.

I've only got photos of her, because we went to a Derby Day, and I didn't end up riding because my parents were in Melbourne, and I stayed at her house.

And it's easier for me to have Navy/Sky Blue/Yellow, because those are my schools colours, and I just use all the gear I wear for Interschools.

IMO criteria #1 is what do YOU think looks good in photos? Photos are what's going to remind you of those great runs for the rest of your life.

I once saw a picture of myself in a pink shirt while schooling my chestnut and my eyes exploded with pain. No more pink and chestnut! For my own taste chestnut rules out the whole red-based segment of the color wheel. But I'm sure there are other people who think it looks great. :D

I know some riders who have a color that is "their" color regardless of the horse. I personally believe in complementing the horse's color, but there is definitely a lot of individual taste as to what people think looks good. So, in the end, what makes you feel good and like you really came to play, and makes you happy when you look back at those photos, is the right color for you. :)

I have a big grey and I use black and baby/light blue. He looks good in the popular navy and green too. I agree with posters that recommended buying any pricey items I would go with black or some other color that goes well with anything.

I used lilac and black. I had a lilac polo, gloves, love stick, and woof boots. I kept it toned down with a black saddle pad. When it was cold I used a black shirt.

I would say pick what ever matches your vest and your horse. If you are going to have multiple rides, you may want to choose a base color that matches all of them - usually navy or black will do, then add a secondary to jazz it up. Then you can use tape, or a different helmet cover, etc to make things different.
I used to show my chestnut in a hunter green and navy - but now I'm riding a mealy bay Mustang - who looks HORRIBLE in green. So I changes my colors to red, white and blue, with the main color being blue ( color of my vest). When I showed my friends bay I used blue and yellow - which looked really sharp on him.
Pictures in are my profile.

My mare is going to be navy and light bright blue (with white/gray/silver if appropriate).

I just started eventing, but have long wanted my colors to be navy/light blue (though all through being a kid my stuff was navy/hunter). My bright bay looks pretty adorable in it, and the light blue doesn't seem offensive on other color horses (did my first HT on a very pumpkin chestnut :) ).

Not too TOO bright, but still very fun to jazz up the navy and my two favorite colors to begin with. :)

My colors are Mint Green and Hunter Green!! I wanted to throw Yellow in there (my fav color) but mom said tht it would look tacky with a bright chestnut pony. It would look fine with my bay guy, but I like the 2 greens together.
The most common colors I have seen are navy/hunter/white, hunter/yellow, and hunter/white..

or deck your poor horse out in blaze orange (it doesn't actually look bas on all horses, but I saw a girl on a red chestnut covered with the stuff)

 I groom for a girl who has two roans and her XC colours are ... orange. Thankfully she has highlights of orange (ie orange hat cover, orange saddle cloth, orange tape on boots) so it isn't too overwhelming.

She's very easy to spot on the course

My silver dilute is in Navy/Sky Blue/Yellow. I think it looks really nice on him :)

This was at an interschool comp, so this is my uniform, but he wears those boots, and I wear the shirt and tie or a white stock, and he used to wear that browband for dressage, but I got a new brass one :) My xc rugby polo is the colour of that jumper, except it has thin white/yellow/sky bands on the upper part of my upper right arm, because it used to be my dad's uni shirt when he got his Masters :) I only wear a singlet under it, and it is warm in winter and not to bad in summer. I do have another one I was going to wear in November if it's hot again, but I forgot which one it was !

The last event I was at I saw at least 5 horses in super bright lime green and fluorescent hot pink. Of course, those were the people who really colored EVERYTHING possible as well, down to their gloves and bows in their horse's tail. Not gonna lie, it made me a little nauseous. A friend of mine has ADD with her colors and switches them up pretty much every show. I'm boring-- I just wear black and white with tan breeches and regular silver duct tape on my pony's boots.

I also saw a small kid who was a complete jumble of different colors and patterns...it was actually kinda cute since she was so young. I don't remember everything she had on, but her helmet cover was red and green and she had those riding tights with the lycra stripe down the side with a pattern that was a mess of different colors and geometric shapes. On a pinto pony, nonetheless. Very cute, and the only competitor all day to wish me a good ride!

When I evented, my colors were navy and black on my grey horse. First it was just navy, then I decided whatever I couldn't find in navy was going to black. I ended up just doing a navy shirt, saddle pad & crop, and left tack and boots black. (See profile picture.)

But whenever I get back into eventing, I want to keep the navy, but I'm dying to add a warm pop of color. Perhaps a goldrod yellow. ...or orange. (War eagle!)

As a young rider I loved royal blue, EVERYTHING!! My mare is a dark chestnut so it looked good or so my teenage self thought. And that statement about how your family will notice and buy you everything (non-horsey items) in 'your' color is so true...my grandmother still buys me everything is some form of blue!!

Now as an adult I do navy and black with hints of silver (or grey). It was a pain over the years to figure out that the royal blue was just too bright and I wanted to tone it down. I still have a couple things that are royal, like my trunk and cooler (which is monogrammed or I would have sold it by now)

I do a black vest, black helmet cover (with grey or navy band), black horse boots (with grey or navy tape), grey crop, navy polo, navy breastcollar and my saddle pad is black with navy trim.

Oh and I am still riding the dark chestnut mare and I have a young bay that will be my future horse, he will be keeping the same colors.

I did get the Roma saddle bags and bridle bag which are navy (ish) with light blue trim and had them monogrammed in silver, I really like the combo ... I might be using a little more light blue in the future ;)

Navy and orange!

http://brantgamma.exposuremanager.com/p/rutter_helen_aec0/aecl8186_3_72_446

I find that my amount of orange is way more obnoxious off the horse, all my clothes, all his blankets, and halters, buckets, etc. I just find that I don't have any interest in buying stuff unless it's orange. Very sad addiction...
Wish I could afford the custom Devoucoux with an orange seat!

The colors for our farm (the stalls, jumps, newsletters, apparel, etc) are light blue and light gray.
My colors have always been black and white, with the "flash" of color for each horse. I rode a friend's horse at a trial this year and put pink duct tape on the boots and crop, rode another at a schooling show and did yellow duct tape; you get the point.

There's a huge difference between carrot orange and I-hope-the-other-hunters-see-us orange. Sharon White never looks glaring or tacky, just orange.

My daughter wears Orange, pumpkin orange. I think if done right it looks fine.

I own chestnuts, so I went with shades of blue :-) Core color of Navy, with royal and light blue accents. I think we look pretty cute :-)

I don't have official colours yet, but I'm leaning toward navy w/ sky blue - which seems a pretty popular choice! I'm horrible w/ telling if colours go together, but these two seemed like a natural pair, and blues go w/ most common horse colours, so once I actually have my own horse I'll be all set! :)

RolyPoly, I was gonna do navy, light blue and silver/gray, until I saw how many other people were doing it too, haha. Oh well, I still might keep it, my mare and I have a while to go before we are ready to actually event anyway!

Hehe - I see it as a good thing - if I ever forget a saddle pad, there will be someone w/ my colours who will lend me one ;)
