Have tried sprays, chili oil..etc...and he still eats them off...then pulls a shoe inevitably.
We are using the Beval heavy duty pull ons

Is there any evidence of skin irritation? Wondering if he's allergic to the boot itself - making him itchy or uncomfortable.
Or maybe he just doesn't like the darn things.
I can't think of anything helpful...... though I admit I'm curious to know if his trim might be wonky. The only time I've ever had trouble with shoes coming off if the trim isn't right. Dunno.

Maybe try something like quarter boots, or the new "grab" boots? I don't have any experience with either, but it would be harder for the horse to get at. http://www.bitofbritain.com/Bell_Boots_s/111.htm

I know what you mean - two of mine are chestnuts. Sorry I can't think of anything but those grab boots look interesting. Not floppy. Guess if the movement is bothering him the grab boots might work - but if it's irritation or pressure they won't.
Not much help, am I! Sorry.

My horse doesn't eat his, he gets his friends to do it for him. His buddy grabs it, tears it off and then throws it into the neighbors cow pasture. I just gave up on bell boots.

I don't have any suggestions but I used to have a horse that would rip bell boots right off. He would grab them in his mouth and tear them off.
I found a cure for me... I sold him. ;) Now he's someone else's problem. Sorry I just couldn't resist since I have been through the same thing but never found a 'rea' solution.

My gelding loves to rip off the rubber bell boots! Especially when I get a new pair!! He's pretty sensitive, so I usually get the cheap rubber ones, the Davis ones give him rubs. I also use boots made by Roma, they are really soft and he usually wont bother them. http://www.amazon.com/Roma-Neoprene-Bell-Boot-Small/dp/B0011UA8YG/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1237949171&sr=1-7
He usually does it when he's bored, if I accidentally leave them on overnight, forget it, they are ripped off his feet by morning.

My horse ripped them off when he decided (and was right) that he didn't need them anymore.

How about those annoying clackity-clack petal boots?

My horse is always taking chunks out of his bell boots. He will grab it at the top or bottom and take off half circles--he also grabs in the middle and folds it in half and chews out a perfect circle--he is quite gifted :D

You know what, that may be a really good idea for you! Those buckle around the top and I really think they'd be hard to tear off. He might get a petal off, but not the whole thing.

With my horse, he wasn't the culprit tearing the boots, but his neighbor was doing it -- reaching under the pipe fencing to grab the boots playing around. I got tired of buying new boots all the time ($$), so for awhile I did double layers. Bottom layer was the good thick bottom gum pull-on types, then I would have a cheap velcro boot in a bigger size that I saturated with pepper spray (off horse), let dry, then put on top. That way I didn't risk the pepper spray irritating the skin of my horse, and he only had to wear them when in the pen next to the other horse. It also meant that if the other horse grabbed the boots, he got the cheapie top layer and not the more expensive underlayer.

I had a 4 yr old gelding that used to pick his belloots off. It wasn't a clean rip, but I went through a couple pairs of bellboots (I thought he was losing them outside) until I ended up having to leave the pull ons on him bc the barn was not putting them on anymore (had $$$$$ shoes and was ripping them off weekly because of some serious over reach). I came the next morning and he had little jelly bell boot rings around his pasterns and bits of bell boot everywhere. The sight was priceless with his goofy stupid looking baby face and bracelets.
He also ripped off blankets.... could get his sliding door off track and squeeze out the non latched side of the door and pull blankets of racks and halters off hooks....
I ended up sending him off to retirement (rehab project that was determined non rehabbable) so I have no idea how to fix the bell boot eater/ripper offer. But I feel your dilemma!
Good luck!
