View Full Version : One-AC for non-sweater?

I have a horse that doesn't sweat much even in heat and humidity. It takes quite a bit of work to get horse sweating and then only light. But by then the horse is blowing ALOT.
Anyone used One-AC? Did it help? Any downside to trying it? I don't want to do something that might ultimately make the problem worse?

It works for some horses, not for others. I had no luck with it and went with another product. You have to follow the directions, which include I believe not working the horse heavily for three weeks as the levels build up. My personal prefence is a product called Let Em Sweat.
If not else it certainly will not hurt.

I tried that and several others.
A can of beer works as well or better. Cheaper too.

I was going to post earlier but was drawing a blank on the name of the product I preferred. I second the Let Em Sweat recommendation.

I use OneAC, start it in the spring. Once the heat of summer hits, I also use something called (I think) Pro Sweat (it looks like electrolytes). Last summer I added a bottle of Guinness Stout to her breakfast. In any case she's been fine. Of course I also try to ride in the cool of the evening or morning, rather than mid-day. (I should mention her problem started after going on TriHist one summer for allergies - 3 days after starting it, she stopped sweating - I'm paranoid ever since that it will happen again.) Good luck!

One AC did nothing for my non sweater but worked like a charm for my friends horse.
A bottle of Guinness a day worked wonders for mine, though.

I've found that One AC is a good preventative for horses that aren't good sweaters, and if you start before the heat of summer sets in. But if your horse is a confirmed non-sweater, aint nothin' on earth is gonna help! :) Except moving him to a different climate that is. I speak from experience! Good luck!

I used to use One AC but then tried Pro Sweat and it worked so well. I do not think One AC did much for my horse.

I am too cheap for Guinness. Mine just gets a can of whatever it is you bought for those beer bashes when you were younger and it was your turn.
Keystone or Old Milwaukee but regular, not light. Have bought Bud because the mare likes the Clydesdales on the fancy label:lol:. If it's on special.

If you have a good acupuncturist in you area, you may want to try that as well. When my horse completely shut down one year during a horrible, humid heat wave, the acupuncture and bleeding was the only thing that got him started again. He lives on One AC at least 8 months of the year, and also gets a bottle of Guinness twice a day when it's really hot.

I've never heard of Let Em Sweat but will look it up. Also will check up on Pro Sweat.
When my gelding was in an eventing barn he got a beer with dinner every night. They also gave electrolytes. But he is an Olympic level sweater - so bad the sweat is just dripping off him and forming puddles if he stands still too long.
I always used to just give electrolytes year round (it can get hot in December here) but stopped when it seemed to be affecting my gelding's water intake.
The beer is a good idea - I just wonder how much will get to the horse and how much the barn help will use. (I don't mind buying the guys some beer but not Guinness for humans).

How does the beer help? Does it matter if the horse is IR??

Anyone? Beer? What does it do to make them sweat? Is it ok for the IR horse? Please?

Yeah, I would like to know why some people are using dark lagers for anhydrosis. I've searched all over the internet and have found lots of people that claim it works, but no explanation as to why!

Not sure if/why dark lagers are supposed to work.
My gelding really developed a taste for Guinness though and could tell when we were trying to trick him with Bud.

Prozac - do you know how it works or why? That's what I'd like to know. I know the "oldtimers" used to add Guiness Stout as a daily "supplement" but I never knew why as a kid.
I have a guy that's borderline IR and I'm just afraid to give him beer if it could be good for the sweating but not for the sugar.
