I found one of my Col. Spanish mares, Savannah Mist, down and in a lot of pain this a.m. Cisco, my younger stallion, was with her and guarding her. It took two of us and 8 cc of Banamine to get her up and to walk her to the barn. She was not colicking nor losing her foal from what we could tell and for all the world acted like she was tying up...very stiff in her gait, tense and tight in her body, and reluctant to move. How she could have tied up I have no idea...she lives outside, is not worked, and she gets no grain. She's in foal to Wayward Wind and due in mid May. She is a good companion for Cisco and bossy tough little mare and they get along very well.
The Banamine got her feeling somewhat better and she could at least walk the 100 yards to the main barn, and she's standing in a stall eating hay OK. Vet was out already (I called in an emergency) and she's puzzled also. Elevated pulse still even with Banamine and still quite sore. No sign of a broken bone and not much swelling anywhere to go by. Her problems seem to be hind end and mostly right side with some swelling her her RF also. No sign of an abscess. We don't know if she took a fall in the field or had some other pasture injury. The ground is very bad here...we've had days and days of rain so a fall is very possible. Vet has taken blood to check for systemic problems like cellulitis so for now it's a wait and see and keep her up and quiet. Another concern was the foal was pressing on her sciatic nerve and causing rear end paralysis but that seems quite unlikely...just a guess right now.
I'll keep you all posted but I'm very worried for her. My priority is to save her but we'd hate to lose her foal so close to due also. Send all the healing wishes and jingles you can spare her way.

The foal at this stage is big enough that if it pressed on a nerve or sat on a vein, could cause issues... nerve is obvious, but putting enough pressue on a big enough (or a couple) of veins/arteries can cause your basic "leg falls asleep" and pain afterwards... (have you ever slept on an arm, woke up with it 'dead' then it hurt like the dickens for a day or two... )
Hoping it's that simple! Poor girl, poor you!

We've got the rain/slick mud here, too, so I'm thinking a fall is likely-- years ago my daughter's pony mare spread-eagled from a slip in the mud and was sore all over for days. I hope your case is just that simple.

Years ago I had a TB gelding slip and spread his front legs straight out to each side. His breast nearly touched the ground and it looked awful. He actually groaned in agony and I was sure he had injured himself badly. When he got his feet back under himself, he could hardly move. The Vet couldn't find anything broken, so we gave him pain killers and stall rest. Believe it or not, in just a few days he was perfectly fine.
Hopefully your girl just had a slip and will be fine just as quickly!

Thanks all. Just got in from giving her more Banamine and she's doing well...comfortable for now, good appetite and a bit of her normal orneriness was showing when she got her shot. Still have not heard from my vet. I imagine no news is good news..and I know she's on call so it may be morning before I hear about the bloodwork. I am praying it was just a slip or silly thing and she'll be great tomorrow.
Shawnee...this is an LP mare also and quite a rare mare in our breed. She's not the prettiest or the best mover I've got but she has tons of appytude!

Good Morning everyone. Thanks for all the jingles and well wishes. They seem to be working. Savvy walked out to a small pen this morning with Sierra (a buddy of hers) and while she's not 100%, she's SO much better it's amazing. The banamine she had last night should be worn off now so that is not making her appear better than she really is.
The vet called a little while ago and she can rule out tying up or cellulitis from the blood work. She did say that she could see there had been a major stress event from the blood work...her white count and something else...(bad memory on my part) but it's not a sign of anything systemic like an infection. Our best guess now is she had a bad fall or the fetus pinched a nerve which caused her immense pain. She said anytime a mare falls that hard, there are obviously concerns for the foal and an internal uterine bleed but since she remains bright and eating well, most likely we got really lucky.
So, fingers crossed, we seem to have been really really lucky or blessed here. She not out of the woods yet as there may still be some internal problems with the foal we are not aware of yet, but it looks like she will be OK. I'm to keep her up in a small pen or stalled and quiet and under observation for a few more days and it's likely I'll just keep her up until she foals. She's about 45 days from her earliest due date so there's not a lot of point of risking her running and getting hurt again.
Thanks again!

Sounds like she is much better, great! Not to scare you, but I will relate this incident, jsut in case it is pertinent. I had an old mare (20) that we had bred, she had been a broodmare all her life and when we got her she was in very bad condition. We turned her around in about 4 months and decided to breed her one last time (at age 19) as she was such a well bred mare. She had never had any issues with foaling, carrying a foal etc. About three months prior to foaling, she showed some signs of being uncomfortable but nothign alarming. Then about 4 weeks prior to foaling, she went down VERY much in pain etc. WE basically thought colic and vet did too, so treated it as such, although I kept feeling soemthing wasn't right. She was on/off NQR for the next four weeks. She then foaled, uneventfully early one morning. Foal was fine, she was fine, placenta normal, no bleeding etc. Foal was up and nursed and we thought everything was good. It was Memorial Day weekend (two years ago) and we had a trip planned with my father to the mountains, so we went. My neice (adult) and two other very savvy hrose people were looking after things. Next morning I had a call, mare was down in the stall in distress. After hearing that her gums were pale, and they ahd called the vet to come out, I told them to get her and foal out of the stall. i jsut had a feeling this wasn't going to end well. She was up and down a few times, allowing foal to nurse, and then back down again. By the time the vet got there, she had died. Turns out she had a ruptured uterine artery, and vet felt she had probably had it for a while, but pressure of foal and fluid kept it from bleeding out. However, after the foal was born, the pressure taken off, it likely ruptured the next morning after foaling, probably jsuut a blood clot holding it together and there would have been no saving her. This is the second horse I know that did this. I saw one die from the same thing (that was still in foal) at a barn once, I was cleanign a horse up for a show in the wash stall across from the mare, was owned by the BO. She had been up eating hay, and when I looked over, she was down so I went to investigate. Same thing, shallow breating and white gumms, called the BO from back of barn and tried to get her up but she was dead before he even got to her stall. Not trying to scare you, as this doesn't sound the same, but I always get a little worried about amres showing any signs of pain while in late pregnancy!

I thought you all might like to know that Savannah foaled a lovely dun sabino (and very healthy:D) filly this morning. The mare went early...about 321 days and did not give warning...so this one was a surprise to me! I found her right after I did outside chores and the baby was just up, mare had passed plancenta and was looking for her breakfast. I have not had one slip a foaling past me before! First time for everyone I guess
I am so relieved to have a healthy filly after our scare in March with her. If you remember, she was mare that I found down in the pasture and unable to get up and walk into the pasture.
Here are couple pics of her. She has some interesting markings and I'm not sure if she will get some appy spots like her dam or not...but she clearly has her sire, Wayward Wind's, sabino markings.

Yes, we all have those ones that slip by us. I am probably luckier than most in that me and Mr. Equilibrium take shifts and our job is here with the horses. Having said that, I missed my very first foal ever! Needless to say the next year I think we watched the mare 24/7 3 weeks out!

Thanks! We are simply thrilled and may end up keeping this filly for our program. She is by the older stallion, Wayward Wind and out of our LP project mare and we want some of his daughters anyway. If she has the movement she looks like she'll have with that shoulder and hip, she's staying here! I keep finding new spots on her...her entire belly is white and she has white up all four legs. Best of all, she is friendly and inquisitive and seems very people oriented already.
