Hi all.. does anyone know about Diamond Hits semen quality (lately) and why it seems many semen distributors are not carrying him this past year? Is there an issue? I heard he had colic surgery a year or so ago.. so I just wanted to see if anyone was using him.. or not..

I used two doses of Diamond Hit frozen last year, with no pregnancies. The first mare I did try and breed on foal heat, against the suggestion of my vet. The second mare I am not sure what happened? Both mares caught next cycle with a different frozen semen.

I really want a Diamond Hit baby and have a good mare for him, just am a bit gun shy now.

I would contact the semen dealers directly and ask if there were DH pregnancies last year. They would be a better source of information.

Five years ago, I used four doses on three different mares with no pregnancies. Determined to get a Diamond Hit baby, I had Judy Yancey breed our Havidoff mare at her farm. This mare took on the first cycle. The resulting filly is a very special coming three year old. I'd really like to use him again, but I, too, am hesitant about his frozen, especially at its current price.

I do remember reading that someone has triplets coming from Diamond Hit this year from an ET flush! I do not know when that semen was purchased though?

fannie mae.. what beautiful babies.. Id love to see shooting stars filly! Another local breeder lost her pregnancy w/ DH rather far along and after using four doses.. I know its always a gamble with frozen..but there seem to be a lot of hit and miss with his frozen which makes me really want to get more feedback from breeders. What foals Ive seen are really nice..but you know what they say, only gamble with what you are willing to lose.

You might check out the semen thread on uncouth. There is a large list of semen used, both frozen and fresh, and whether or not the mare got pregnant and how many cycles it took. I haven't looked for Diamond Hit in particular, but many stallions are listed on that thread. http://uncouthbb.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=794

My thanks for all the replies as well. I have a Diamond Hit son here that is so spectacular, I'm considering trying for another one. Hmm...

I am pretty sure that Judy Yancey is still carrying Diamond Hit frozen.

Also, FWIW, one of our breeders in Georgia had a LOVELY premium DH filly last year from a refined Hohenstein mare. I think it took two tries due to cycling issues with the mare, but the Oldenburg inspectors loved the filly. "Of course she is premium!" said chief inspector Mareile Oellrich-Overesch. :D

This was on the link that someone posted Diamond Hit - Good in the 30% Post Thaw, prego on first try
. I have always LOVED Diamond Hit, I debated last year on breeding to him, but dealing with an older mare, I decided to go w/ a stallion in the US. If I get a filly this year, my future breeding plans for her, is she will be bred to Diamond Hit. He has always been my drool worthy horse. Always.

That helps a bit. I think its really really important to be able to hear from other breeders more so than distributors... not that I think its an honesty issue.. but the dialogue between breeders about what is working and what is not is , to me, very important. I know there are always rumors..for better or worse...so to hear from first hand experiences helps making the investment in breeding easier.

I did hear Diamond Hit needs a mare who is pretty leggy....that he does not do as well with shorter legged mares.. similar to his sire. Anyone have feedback on that?

I have used 2 doses (one pregnancy, one not, very normal) This was 5 years ago, but a friend of mine have used 2 doses the past 2 breeding seasons, and got 2 pregancies first try.

Yes, a leggy typie mare is your best bet! Normally very good offspring!

I used 2 doses in one cycle (timed protocol); no pregnancy. Didn't know about the "leggy" aspect -- good thing, because the mare was NOT leggy at all.
