Hi, I was just wondering what colors would look good on a chestnut horse? he is about 16 hands and with two hind socks. I am wondering what color of wraps, saddle pads, blankets etc. I do a circuit shows and do juniors. Thank you!!:)

I love Navy Blue on my Chestnut guy! Red is solid chestnut, 16.1 with a blaze and no socks!

Secretariat always looked pretty rockin' to me in royal blue and white.

I have a chestnut with 4 white socks. All my stuff is Navy and light blue but I have to say I think Hunter w/ burgundy trim looks stunning on him. I have one sheet that is that color- a stock sheet I bought and it looks fabulous on him. Plus, so much stuff comes in those combos you'll never have to buy custom!
I'm also boring in that all my polos and wraps are black or navy and all my saddle pads are white!

White.
But....I dress mine in baby blue, navy, green, black.....and construction/caution green. (they're his "caution: idiot horse" wraps)
I avoid reds (including pink), oranges, etc.

I love the hunter green on the reds.
Like ybiaw, I don't care for the red based colors on red horses.

Depends a LOT on the shade of chestnut, and the mane/tail colors. I've got a very coppery red chestnut with a red-gold mane, and I'm always surprised at how nice the "autumn" colors look on her-- browns, oranges, reds. Put the same thing on the blonde chestnut next door, or the purpley-red chestnut on the other side-- yeeech.
I have this saddle pad that I lovingly refer to as "turd brown"-- it's ugly as a dead buzzard just sitting there, but put it on the Rouxster, and it just makes her copper pop; it's weird.
Grab some fabric swatches and try them on like saddle pads-- you'll soon see which ones flatter either by complimenting (reds/browns) or contrasting so sharply (greens/blues).

My copper-orange sorrel mare always looked fabulous (well I thought so anyway) in hunter green. Actually, she was so orange-y that navy and dark green were close to the ONLY colors that looked decent.
My other mare is more of a dark red chestnut; her color is dark purple (eggplant and similar shades), which sounds weird but I think looks nice.

Hunter green or sage green look wonderful on a chestnut. I hate navy on a chestnut (okay, navy looks bad on most horse colors, except possibly gray or white).

I don't like purple, orange, or reds for chestnuts. Looks not awesome, IMO. Teal is my favorite looks good on everybody color, hunter is second.

I like purple, warm browns, and greens. Red is definitely bad, as is black.

Just about any shade of green looks stunning on a chestnut. The lighter the coat the darker the green is, IMHO. Of course, green is my favorite color, so maybe I'm just a bit biased?
Really light coppery chestnuts also look good in basic black.
Strangely enough my old trainer used to put golden yellow on her chestnut and he looked great in it. I think it really looks nice on a liver chestnut.
They also look great in any plaid that doesn't have burgundy, red, orange, or purple in it.
If you want to go unusual, aqua, turqoise, and teal also look great on chestnuts.
I'm not a big fan of blues... but I guess that's just a personal preference. The only horses I like Navy on are greys and palomino/cremellos.

my haflinger is very bright copper and black and gold look the best on her. so does dark green with black or cream trim.

As a natural redhead who owns two chestnut mares, I highly recommend a deep purple, or hunter green.

my boy is liver chestnut- he has a tendency toward orange in the summer, and nearly bay in the winter... I love royal blu eon him. he has 3 white socks, and a white blaze.snip... royal anything looks great on him. a little vibrancy that contrasts completely with his coat...... its nice :)

I have a very classic coppery chestnut mare. All of my things are green and white, some with a gold trim. I think light-to-bright shades of blue (sky to royal, say) would look great on a similarly colored horse as well, but I'm just a fan of green ;)
While I love the color purple, I do not care for it on most chestnuts, nor do I particularly like reds/yellows.

Take something opposite his red chestnut coat color like a blue or green. A warm red, yellow, or orange will drown his color, and you want to make him stand out. Royal blue looks great on red chestnuts as does navy and hunter green. You can also never go wrong with classic black.

I think I read somewhere that, when painting a chestnut horse, you should use Cerulean Blue for the highlights (where the sun glints on the coat). So I think sky blue would be an ideal colour.

Green. Nothing beats it. I like the dark, sort of evergreen green, but also hunter green.

i love baby/sky blue on light chestnuts. my pony was a light golden chestnut with flaxen mane and tail, and lots of chrome, and he looked super all spiffed up in baby blue.

My Gus is a bright orangey copper chestnut with chrome and has to suffer with a ton of pink. It's not his favorite color, but it's my favorite color and I don't see the wisdom (especially fiscally) in changing colors for different horses. I use a combo of black, white, and pink and I think he still looks just fine. I do, however, try to maximize the black and white and use the pink as an accent or just on me.

I love green on my chestnut - especially a sage or moss green. He also looks great in royal blue, and probably would look great in baby blue but that's my red roan overo mustang's color and he doesn't share. I've also used a goldenrod color - kind of a goldy yellow - that most people looked at and said "eww" and then said "wow" when they saw it on him, it looked great.
I also like neutrals on him, like cream and light beige.
And I have a western pad that is cream, gold, brick red and moss green that is just beautiful on him.

My coppery/red chestnut mare goes in blue... currently royal blue, but I prefer lighter shades. Chestnuts are a pain to find good colors for... give me a nice, chocolate-y bay any day!

My chestnut mare's colors are black, hunter, and tan. She looks surprisingly awesome in burgundy and the last round of "stuff" I got was burgundy.
