***UPDATE***
This event has been rescheduled due to the weather. We will work to reschedule and repost the event at a laster date this next week.
I will be sending a PM to those who had shown interest later today.

************************************************** *******
Here is a list of those who have shown interest in this event.
Renting Horses:
Currently no one will be renting
Bringing own Horse:
Simbalism
Jazzrider (for Saturday only)
Klawpaws (thanks to Jazzrider :) )
Interest in Event:
The current accomdations available right now is one of two: Tent Camping and the FarmHouse (in which I can get a discount for anyone interested in renting a Room with an actual bed).
The Tent camping is Free and we'll set up right by the strong stream that is Secret Passage Creek. There will be provided Tubular pens if needed (Please give me advance notice so they can be set up the week prior). I can provide at least ONE extra tent if needed. (I have 2 personal tents).
Friday evening dinner can be cooked over an open fire (we'll need to plan this in advance), or we can simply travel into Strasburg as a group for a pretty decent mexican fare at a local restaurant.
For those trailering in Friday evening, we'll need to talk about Saturday Breakfast, do you want it or is a good cup of coffee over the campfire okay with you?
Saturday Lunch most likely will be sandwiches, so if there is a meat you'd prefer or one you don't like, let me know.
Saturday evening dinner is being planned for over the campfire and will consist of grilled (herb seasoning) chicken, grilled and buttered sliced potatoes and corn on the cob, fresh made bread and possibly a desert.
For those staying over night Saturday for the moonlight ride, would you like a bigger breakfast Sunday morning before you get on the road towards home?
I had not planned to charge a fee for this gathering, but for those interested in traveling as light as possible, you are welcome to offer me something in the way of greenbacks in support of the meals that will be provided.
As for the renting of the horses, I am still waiting to hear from my BO on the discounted price for this event. I am working with my trainer also on using her as a guide, should those attending wish to have one, it's not necessary since I will be riding along with you.
**On a side note, I have 2 horses, I can only ride one, so the other will be available for a confident rider should you wish to use Harriett (Liver Chestnut mare standing at 14.2Hhs and weighing in at 900lbs. give or take a few).
Growing even more excited about this. :)
************************************************** ********
Last year, I got the idea from someone else's thread and then as it turned out, I couldn't even pariticupate. :(
So, I'd like to poss yet another gathering. My Barn, Secret Passage Ranch (http://www.secretpassageranch.com) is where I'd like to host this. (of course I'll get prior permission from my Barn owner). They have an refurbished 3bdrm, 4ba, full kitchen, 1800's Farmhouse they rent out and there is space plenty for camping should anyone want to stay over night.
There is plenty of space to trail ride on the Ranch and then the 5,000 miles of the George Washington National Forrest, and should the weather turn bad, the indoor arena is set up at one end (due to unfinished flooring at the moment) to host large pic-nic type party with a serving table or two and a number of pic-nic tables.
Spring is due to begin on March 20th, so lets begin working on a date within April or May and perhaps a moonlight ride would be doable should anyone stay overnight. April 9th is a Thursday, and that is the next Full Moon. But May 9th is a Saturday and should give us plenty of time to plan the gathering.
Okay, NOT JUST Virginians are invited, if you are willing to drive up or down, you would be most welcome. There is a Hamton Inn just off Rt 522 & I66 and I'll find out what my BO would charge for an over night equine stay.
If this sounds like fun, lets begin working on it. :)

VA, I'd be interested if we could do an overnight.
I don't like hauling my trailer after dark because the lights need to be rewired, and I'm not willing to endanger myself or my horse by travelling at night.
Heck, I can even camp out as long as my horse has a stall!
I'm almost 4 hours away from Marshall, VA, so unless we get started and finished early, staying overnight is the best plan for me if I bring a horse.

arab, that is GREAT! :) The stalls inside the barn are all taken, but I might be able to get my BO to set up some tudular type stalls close to where those who want to and are camping. Would that work for you?
I am not sure who many my BO has available, but we might be able to set up those tubular type stalls for all interested in staying over night.
This is exciting, I'm sitting down with BO this weekend to go over my ideas and see where we can go from here.

Hi,
When you mentioned the riding options, were you thinking that people would primarily trailer their horses in, or are there horses for hire available at the ranch?
Either way, sounds like fun!

Oh, there are most certianly Horses for Hire at the Ranch. :)
And you are welcome to use your own tack too. I'll be honest, the tack available isn't the best, which is something we are beginning to work on this Spring.
Some of the saddles are old cavalry style saddles, absolutely NO Padding. :dead:

VA, Casper won't mind a tubular, outside stall.
In fact, he prefers to be outside anyway, and as long as the weather's fairly decent, there's no reason he needs to be put in an inside stall.
The closer I can be to my horse, the better I like it. If I have to, I can put a sleeping bag and an air mattress down in my trailer. That's what I used to do when I was showing away from home. :)

I would have no problem camping out with anyone who wished to do so. And I'm sure the Guest house would be available for anyone who wished a shower.
I'll have to get out my tent and air it out and seal it again for this season anyway. ;) I need to air out my Civil War A-frame tent as well. So, I have 2 tents in case someone needs to barrow one. :)

Mar. 12, 2009, 11:12 AM
Just a heads up, I'm willing to cook over the campfire for Saturday evening's dinner? I'm a good campfire cook, just ask my Civil War Units.
If you don't want to haul food stuffs that weekend, we can work something out where ya'll can send the funds to the BO and I'll do all the shopping and hauling/storing of the foods.
I'm thinking for Saturday evening; Chicken, Potatos, and corn over the fire. I can probably even do Fresh bread and a cobbler or two over the fire. I cook with Cast Iron and have an array of dutch ovens and such.
So, just some ideas.. As for lunch, sandwiches? And do we want to do a Breakfast on Sunday, for those who stay over? Bacon, eggs, pancakes, waffles, biscuts, all over the fire? :)

'nother cast iron queen here, but I'm thrilled to let you do the honors in this case! Sounds like you have a lot of experience, "Cookie!" I think it would be fun to just send you the $$ and have a group feast. The menu sounds great.
Definitely keep lunch simple sandwiches, and I think breakfast would be nice to wake up to.
I have tent, sleeping bag, etc. or could rent a room in the guest house, either way. Want to make this as easy on your barn owner as possible, and if a room rental will help I'm glad to do it.
I'm up for this if the date chosen works for my schedule! Sounds like fun. Think I'll leave DH at home to take care of our beasties -- he's a horseperson, too, but he's not a COTHer!
We've talked about doing re-enactment stuff; it will be great to hear about what you do, VAHorseGurl!

Right now, it seems the best overall date is indeed May 9th. It's a Saturday and a Full Moon, for those who wish a Moon Light ride. :)
Rally, if you'd like, and the turn out is fairly large, would you mind helping in the prep and creatation of dinner? :) Purdy Pleazz ;) And if you have any suggestions on dinner, I'm all ears.
As for my re-enacting, I'd love to tell you all about it. I could even dress in a camp dress for dinner. 7 layers of clothing and you stand around an open fire in 90 degree weather cooking for a bunch of dirty smelly men. Go figure.

Sounds good. I think I am several hours away as well, probably about 2.5 or so. I would prefer to stay over. I'm thinking to arrive on Friday afternoon/ evening to be there ready to ride on Saturday(if that isn't a problem?). I can go either way on food, whatever everyone wants to do. Sending money for a group feast or assigning meals to members of the group(that's what my friends and I do when we go away for the weekend). I am just in the process of purchasing some camping stuff. This past weekend had done some "window shopping" at Walmart and Target to price camping gear. I have my eye on a "pavilion" type tent to go over table etc and a small shower/porty potty tent, shower bag and mat for sleeping. I have also been pricing truck bed tents and this Friday when I get paid am planning on ordering one of those as well. yay! I have several camping trips with horse on my calender.

Okay, have spoken with my BO about this event and he's just as excited as I am. :)
The entire Farmhouse rents for $300 a night, BUT I can get it at a discount since I'm a boarder, $150 a night. Or I can rent out by room, still waiting on a price by room.
Camping is obviously free, and those who need a stall, there will be several made available for you either just outside the Indoor arena or they can set them up down by the campsite. A High Line (http://www.equisearch.com/horses_riding_training/trail/julyhighli2305/) or picket line was also suggested for those who's horses will stand tied during the night. We could post centuries to ensure their safety during the night.
One of the RH's has offered to do any grilling for our lunch time meal once we decide on that. I had the idea of Pulled Pork sandwiches, let me know what you think of that. I'm still very much interested in cooking for you Saturday evening, that should be fun.
I am planning to spend this weekend putting the cost of the meals together and I'll post it next Monday and then we can go from there.
This is the site for my Barn, please feel free to check it out, call the Ranch and ask any questions you wish: Secret Passage Ranch (http://www.secretpassageranch.com). :)

Can we set up a portable paddock? My mare does well with that and I have the stuff to set it up. I am definitely game for a moonlight ride.
arabhorse2
Mar. 20, 2009, 09:13 AM
Casper needs either a pen or a stall. He's never been overnight camping, and I seriously doubt he'd stand on a picket line.
That gives me a little over a month to put some time and miles on him beforehand. He needs it, and so do I! ;)
I Google mapped the directions, and one way has me going Rte. 60 to Lexington, then picking up Rte. 81. Not gonna happen. No way am I dragging that horse trailer up and down the Blue Ridge mountains!
I'll take the more scenic route, which is 21 miles closer, and I don't have to worry about semis, log trucks, or impatient drivers riding my bumper while I try to haul that trailer up and down the mountains. :D
Since I'm 4 hours away, I'd like to haul in sometime Friday afternoon, if that's possible. Like Simbalism, I'd rather get there the previous night than try to load a horse hours before dawn to make a morning ride.

I don't see why you couldn't set up a portable paddock, but we will also have tubular pens available as well.

Actually VA, Google maps indicates Rte. 678 as part of the directions, so they're not as bad as one might think. They of course don't indicate that you have to drive through the GW Forest, so that's helpful to know.
The ranch's directions don't work for me anyway, because I'm 90 miles SW of Richmond, and there's no way I'm driving 90 miles out of my way. That would add 1 1/2 hours to an already 4 hour trip. :dead:

This is sounding great! I won't know for sure for about another two weeks if that date (May 9, right?) will work for me, but I'll know with about a month's notice, anyway.
If I can make it I'd love to help with the cast iron cooking, although I don't have any big pots -- 3 10" (one camp oven with legs, 2 w/o legs) and 1 12" but it's enameled so wouldn't work w/ a campfire but would work on a stovetop. But I don't think this is going to be a huge group, and with several ovens we'll be just fine!

Have to agree with you there. A riding get-together, in an out-of-the-way place, and requiring so much time, IS going to eliminate a BUNCH of folks.

VA, Marshall is way off the beaten path for many folks. But then, where I live is, too.
Don't take it to mean anything. There are places I won't haul to, because they're inconvenient for me. PW county is one place I won't take a horse, simply because it's so congested anymore.
Doesn't mean they're bad places, just that for my own reasons I won't take a horse there.
Virginia's a big state. Any place can be considered inconvenient, depending on where someone lives! ;)

I am late to this thread, and was excited to see it, but ....
1. I don't think this is beign held in Marshall (admitted, 'out of the way' for some) but in the GW forest (out of the way for most.)
2. I'd be pleased to do the 'lunch hookup' thing-y's we have done before, but not a weekend gig.
If this morphs into a lunch or dinner count me TOTALLY in.

HR.. this is actually set for my Ranch, Secret Passage Ranch in Fort Valley, Virginia at the base of the George Washington National Forest.
However, if having Lunch in Middleburg, VA would work best or evening in Warrenton, at the Fauquier Springs Country Club, I think I can make the change. :)

Shameless Bump here..
The ride/camp out is set for Fort Valley, Virginia. NOT Marshall...
So, if there are folks who would rather meet for lunch or dinner, I could rework this gathering for either Middleburg or Warrenton.
Just say the word.. And for those who want to do something with horses, the offer is still open for a gathering for a ride on the 9th of May.

VA, I would love to come to the ranch and meet up. I am a very easy person, I have my own tent or can sleep in my trailer dressing room. My horse is very happy to stay in her portable paddock. I can bring food. Admittedly, I am not the worlds greatest gourmet cook, but I'm sure I can come up with something foodwise that's edible. My horse is very laid back on the trail and is often the horse my buddies want to ride their greenies with. Here's my digs...http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3381/3416612007_38f66a309e.jpg. Jazzrider; yes, it's the George Washington National Forest we'd be riding out into. There are a number of intermediate trails and then there is the Old Dominion 100 back towards Elizabeth Furnance(5 hr ride round trip) and it's a bit extreme that is a possibility as well.

Very cool!
As far as moonlight riding? That's out for me and Casper, because he's just now getting used to hauling my butt around in the daylight!
I'll probably bring an air mattress and a sleeping bag, and bed down in my trailer. As long as I can have access to a bathroom and a shower, I'm good.
Casper likes to be outside, so the tubular corrals are best for him. If I can park my trailer beside or near them, I'd like that best. I want him to know I'm close, if he gets nervous.
I've been riding him fairly regularly, so hopefully he won't kill me that weekend!
As far as food, I'll probably bring my own breakfasts and snacks, but hot coffee in the morning would be much appreciated. I always take a variety of food and drink whenever I take a horse somewhere, just in case.
I'll be more than happy to kick in for lunch and dinner, since you're being thoughtful enough to provide 'em.

My friend is not sure if she can come(she's the barn manager where I keep my horse). Her part time weekend help just gave notice and she's not sure if there will be a replacement by then. If she is able to come, she is thinking to just get up really early Saturday and trailer in with son in tow.She will know closer to the date. I am going to come on Friday to get set up. I can do with an instant breakfast and maybe some kind of energy bar for Saturday breakfast. A nicer breakfast on Sunday would be good since most of us will be traveling a ways to get home. I am willing to hand over $$ for food as it so much easier than having to pack all the food stuff as well as all the horse stuff/camping stuff...hehe. The dinner menu sounds delish. As far as sandwiches, I can do most any kind of meat(not fond of fish) Chicken, turkey, beef, ham are all good by me. I am really looking forward to this outing. I have a Dollar Tree near me so will bring some glow sticks for the moonlight ride. Love moonlight rides!!! hehe, I even think my TB mare likes them...hehe.

Jazz, the first ride of the day would be entirely up to the group. ;) I'm a seriously early riser when not sleeping at home. :( So, I'll be up with the chickens or the sun, which ever comes first. *shrugs*
Depending on the day's weather, we can plan the first ride among us here and set the time so that you know how early of a day you will have. So, any suggestions? Want a long ride before lunch or a short one? We can ride out at 9AM or at 10AM or even at 11AM taking Lunch with us??
This ride is for you, so speak up. :)

So, I have one friend who (would have brought her horse) is a no. My other friend who I had thought would be bringing her horse is asking about renting a horse.
Do we have any idea yet on the cost of renting a room at the farmhouse? (that's what I'd want to do) Do we know yet about the cost of renting the horses?
I would probably arrive at your place around 11am on Sat and stay the night and leave Sunday morning. I have to feed at my barn Sat AM :(

If we're able to make it, we could be there by around 1030am (but we could be earlier if we needed to be). My vote would be for a medium ride (3 hrs?). We have a crazy April and our guys won't be in the shape they should be. Just checked mapquest -- it will take us about an hour and a half to get there.

I'm sorry to hear one of your friend's wont be able to make it now, but glad to hear you and the other are still interested in coming.
I am terribly sorry, I have NOT heard back from my BO as of yet, and I've had to come home to North Carolina to care for my ailing Grandmother who just got out of the Hospital. But as soon as I get back, I'll make sure I get that done and post it in the first posting.

My trailer dropped a supporting strut yesterday while I was hauling. I had only gotten 10 miles from home, thank God, so got my rig turned around and drove very slowly back.
Casper was fine, if a little freaked out by the screaming of metal under his feet.
Trailer's parked until I can find someone honest to reweld a support strut, and check the rest of the frame for stress cracks.

Thanks to Jazzrider, we've had an addition to the group. Welcome Klawpaws, I'm so looking forward to meeting you and Jazzrider. :)
I'm truly going to miss meeting arabhorse2 and mybelle, but when RL takes hold, we can do nothing but heed it's call. :(
And unfortunately, I've had my fair share of injuries. Both Pete and Harriett have injuries. Pete's is becoming less of a problem thankfully, or I would have had to rent a horse and I just didn't want a setback in our growing relationship.
Harriett has a huge abscess on her neck very near her 'growing withers.' ;) And while it may or may not have an effect on riding her, I'm just not willing to take the chance. :(
So, I should have updated photos of the space we'll be camping in, along with a tubular stall set up so you can see what it will look like. There will be a shower made available to us for use in the Bunkhouse (rooms available for $150 a night *my boarders discount*) and there are several port-a-johns for convenience purposes. They are cleaned regularly and emptied often (I know, we boarders clean them - YUCK).
My BO has taken off to Arizona to pick up several new horses, and with that, he failed to answer my questions on the Daily rental of his horses. So, as soon as I know I'll pass it along for those who are renting.
Can't wait, look forward to meeting new friends. :)

Okay....in a previous post (#58) I told everyone I was planning on making a weekend of this 'horsie" excursion and I am starting to get excited! After all my departure date is only a week from today!
That means we can start looking at the extended forecast even though we all know things can change in a heartbeat! So right now it is showing high temperatures in the mid/upper 70's and the low temperatures in the 50's. Nice :) Now, we have to do something with the 60% percent chance of rain next Saturday that they are talking about!
We need to start thinking of a gameplan for the weekend although I think I can safely bet VaHorseGurl will have this all taken care of and will make sure we see all the sights that are worth seeing :) Wait...maybe we won't see too many sights on that moonlight ride people are talking about! :)
Is everyone else as excited as I am? Does anyone else out there in the COTH world going to join us for part - or all - of next weekend??

VAHorseGurl....So what is our official count? Does this mean only 3 overnighters (you, me and Sim)? And then Jazzrider and maybe her hubby during the day on Saturday? Maybe the group is small but that means we will really get to know both each other and each other's horses. Also it will be easy to accomodate everyone and decide on a 'schedule' so to speak...

We probably need VAHorsegirl to chime in about how the trails are when they're very wet, and weather we should plan a rain date. I don't want to -- we didn't ride this weekend because of it . But I know those trails, and all those rocks combined with the mud may not make for a fun ride. Right now it looks like rain all week, but that could change...
We just had a small group for the Gettysburg ride and that was nice, so we don't mind!

Okay, here I am. :) I have both good news and bad (weather related).
My good news is, I have a PT Barn job that will tie up my time from 6AM to 9AM from Thursday to Sunday. However, Sunday morning might be able to be switched for the evening shift so I can still make breakfast. *fingers crossed*
The bad news is, the 10 Day forecast for Fort Valley, Virginia (http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USVA0290?from=36hr_topnav_undeclared) is Isolated Thunder Showers Friday, and Few Showers on Saturday.
So, as it stands right now, there are 4 of us. I'm happy to ride in the rain, but will most likely have to rent because I've never ridden Pete or Harriett in the rain and both are barefoot.
We have to talk about the possibility of the slippery rocks and mud out on the trails lady's. Like yourselves, I don't want to plan a rain date, but if we need too, for safety's sake, I think it might be in all our best interests.
So, lets plan to make a decission by Wednesday on the Rain Date and go from there. Please feel free to PM me if need be or phone me on my cell: 703-843-8183.

I believe we have to look at how much "unreversable" work may have already been done here before we decide to reschedule.
1. Did your barn already set-up the pipe corrals? I would hate for their work to be in vain...since they are offering them for free.
2. Did you purchase any of the food yet that may potentially go to waste?
One more somewhat related question:
3. Is the area where the corrals are/will be set-up on low-laying ground? The last thing I want is to have my rig pulled out by a tractor (thinking back to the Old Dominion Endurace Ride last year....what a complete disaster with the down pours!).
If we cancel I am going to have to see if I can rearrange or cancel the vacation day I indicated I would use this Friday. Not impossible just something I would need to do.
Well, I do have back-up riding plans for this weekend so I won't cry if we have to reschedule.....however I do hope I will be able to make it on whatever rain date is chosen(if we have to choose that is...).
Any other determining factors we have to consider in our decision?

Karen,
THANK YOU for the thought, but no one will be put out should we reschedule. That much I assure you.
No corrals have been set up yet. We were to do that this past Sunday, but since it's been raining since Saturday, we decided to wait. Since there are only 3 of us, there is no issue with setting them up on Friday.
Food, no ma'am, I have my list, but was going to wait till Friday to make any parishable purchase. So, we are okay in that respect.
The area by the Creek is low lying, but it doesn't flood, it is soft, please keep that in mind, but where you'd be parking is just up the hill by the Indoor arena and the ground is a mix of gravel and hard packed dirt there.
As for your vacation day, I just hope you don't loose it or have to take it for no real reason, other than you've put in for it. :(
Really, the factors we need to worry about is this rain and how heavy it's been out at the Ranch. I have not been out since Friday just before it started raining and I don't normally go out in the rain, so I don't know what the trails will be like.
Great thought put into your questions Karen and I appreciate it. Anyone else??

Personally, I am still game to come. I'm thinking we can play it by ear for the trails and if we find areas that are deemed too muddy or scary we can turn around and go another way. Is there an arena at the ranch? We could play at doing some bombproofing or trail obstacles and just goof around. There are plenty of horsie things we could do. I am a whiz at wrapping legs, pulling manes and other grooming things, so we could do "classes" of things of interest like wrapping, clipping etc. I have done several talks about first aid and trail safety for riding club so could share some of that info.

Sim, sounds cool by me. :) The Ranch it's self has plenty of space to ride, no true marked trailed, but plenty of pasture land.
Since it looks like you guys are still game, we could always move the camp site up from the creek to right around the indoor arena and change the cooking out over an open fire to perhaps heading into Strausburg for dinner Saturday night. Ya'll like Tex-Mex? ;)
Let me know, I'll have to get out to the Ranch today to make sure the corrals are set up by the Indoor arena.

Okay....I am going to make my official decision after VAHorseGurl posts about how wet the ranch is and what her educated opinion is regarding the trail conditions. Maybe she can post when she gets back from the ranch today?
Actually, are there any restrictions on the ranch regarding riding around the fields if they are wet? How about the park itself? One park I go to often has a basic rule that you cannot ride on the trails for 48 hours after a significant rain event. Another park has a "wet-weather" trail that you have to stay on if the trails are muddy. You are obviously the authority on this one since you live and ride there... The reason I am asking is this is because my main riding goal this year is to go out and enjoy different parks with my horse. I do not want to make any excuses because that is too easy to do if you let it. This trip is a great opportunity for me to take a step in reaching my 2009 'riding' goal in addition to meeting new horse friends.
I do not have any objection to hanging out and doing 'horsey' things. After all it could be interesting because my horse is not all too comfortable in indoor arenas. If we are stuck in there a bit it may be good for her. And I always like to discuss with people different approaches to first aid, horse care, health issues etc. An open-minded discussion about various things would be refreshing. Can multiple horse people in one room acheive that? :) Being sarcastic there...
Okay...so corrals by the indoor...very close to where we would be parking, correct? I am assuming both my horse and Sim's horse would be near each other to keep each other company, correct?
(And I LOVE Tex-Mex).
Jazzrider....if this event happens this weekend maybe I/we can call you on Friday afternoon/evening and give you a status report on the basic conditions of trails and such. I was so looking forward to seeing you again (and meeting your husband). Of course there is a good chance there will not be cell phone coverage :(
No campfire? That would mean no smores!
Waiting to hear back from VAHorseGurl!
VAHorseGurl
May. 6, 2009, 03:35 PM
Okay,
There are no restrictions on where to ride on the Ranch, none that I know of and none were discussed this afternoon.
The US Forrest Service for the GW recommends ONLY that any hiker, mountain biker, or horseback rider refrain from riding the trails after a substantial rain, but there is no law or ordiance against it.
As for a fire and smores, we could definitely get a campfire going, but if it's raining, do you really want to sit out in the rain and do smores? LOLOL
I'm game, I'll be honest, pitching a tent to camp in the rain isn't my idea (done this while on active duty Army), but I'm game if you guys are. :)
So, let me know what you think, I'll check back this evening and get everything ready tomorrow afternoon if need be.

Yep, I'm still game. If worse comes to worse, I have slept in my trailer in the past. If it's yucky VA and you don't feel like setting up tent, the horse stall or dressing room in my trailer will work(if you're not fussy). I have slept putting down a blanket in dressing room and stretching out( I'm about 5'5") and fit fine with the "V" nose dressing room. I also have a cot that would work fine in the horse stall. I have a porty potty tent and potty that we could set up right next to trailer. I also have a Gazebo tent that we could set up to sit under. I believe Walmart had side walls to go with, so I could zip over there and get some. Going out to eat would be fine with me. I may bring some munchy foods for afternoon or later in the evening after dinner. Will it be a faux pas to bring an adult frosty beverage or two? My mare can use her portable paddock to save setting up an extra pipe pen. I will also bring some of my handouts from riding club stuff if we are stuck in the arena. Guess I will throw my folding table in the truck as well. Here's a pic of my friend's when we went "white trash camping" hehe... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3183/2949233590_3ab7c35d4b.jpg Debi

I have been going back and forth on if it is wise traveling the distance to get down to Secret Passage Ranch when the weather is 'questionable'. I am already 60% packed-up so I don't have to throw too much together in order to be ready to hit the road. I even got my glowsticks for the moonlight ride! In addition I planned a vacation day tomorrow. All that is set. There is just something deep inside me that is telling me the 3 plus hour drive may be in vain if any more raindrops fall. I care deeply about trail preservation (heck...that is the entire mission statement of of my trail riding group). I really don't want to travel that far and not see a decent amount of the park. Everything else seems like fun but I would want to make the most of the long weekend and I feel that it may not happen.
As a result of my indecision I feel it is best for me to bow-out at this point. I know it is last minute but, as VAHorseGurl implied, corrals are not set-up yet and food has not been purchased. I do apologize if this causes any inconvenience to you or the ranch.
That being said, I would love to come down another weekend if you would like to either reschedule or if you plan another outing. I just have to coordinate with my husband for the 'animal chore' coverage here at home. He sometimes takes weekend trips or is traveling with work so at times it is just impossible to make things work...but I would definately try. As a matter of fact I would look forward to coming down :)
Now I am going to see if I can switch my vacation day to Monday. My revised plan is to hit a couple wet-weather trails in the vicinity Sunday and Monday in an attempt to keep my beast somewhat fit during this wet, rainy, non-riding part of the year! Grrrr....
Sim and VA.....Don't let me not going stop both of you from getting together and having a good time. Although it would make me jealous to see you post what a wonderful time you had and that the sun came out I really hope it happens for you two!

I didn't want to cancel but neither do I want anyone stuck in the mud or a horse loose a shoe over this. And those are incidentals that could happen.
So.. I'll send a PM to everyone telling them that we'll be rescheduling due to rain. :(
