So I started riding shark-finned withered TB Hope yesterday, and will ride her again today. She's still too skinny to fit a saddle to, but not to worry my 98 lbs is not affecting her 16.2 frame at all - so please don't jump up in arms about riding an underweight horse. She's big, I'm a pipsqueak to her, she laughs at me climbing aboard b/c the mounting block is too short.
Problem is, after 5 minutes my butt HURTS!!! I'm too poor to buy a bareback pad. Is there any hokey/redneck/ghetto/farm-rigged nonsense someone has made in the past (or perhaps a new invention) that can save my booty and allow me to ride more that 5 minutes of walking around in a circle? I'd like to get up to 15 minutes a few times a week but I'll never get any nookie from the boyfriend if I keep this up!!:lol::no:

padded bicycle shorts you can borrow from someone?

Honestly? I'd wait til I got some weight on her. Also, my friend bought an underweight TB and even after he gained weight his topline seemed wonky...got an MT out and those paraspinals popped right back up. There were some adhesions and such.
As for padding...if you have a pad like a keyhole or somesuch foam thing, and are just walking around a bit due to the horse's condition, you could easily just sit on that--your butt doesn't hold you on the horse anyway...so no need to tie it down. Just sit on it.

Can't you just borrow a bareback pad from a friend? I know I have about 5 laying around the tack room.
You could always grab a big western felt pad too.
Once or twice to keep me comfy, I took a sheepskin that I have for a dog bed and put it fleece side down on a horse to keep my butt clean (for mounted lazy grazing), that could work if you have one.

I fashioned this bareback pad when I was riding bareback due to saddle fit issues.
I used a Wintec pad, one of those white kind of dense foam pads. In Dover, they call them Wintec Comfort Pads. I would secure it with an old canvas and leather surcingle from an old New Zealand rug. I was able to add a grab strap as I think I'm way older than you and need the security.
Look around, you'll find something at the barn that you can jury rig to work.
I personally don't like bareback pads as the pad comes down too long under your thigh. The above allows your thigh to be on the horse and just protects your butt and privates. And I don't like the weird surcingles they put on those things. Someone really needs to design a super bareback pad as these are horrible...oh wait...new product idea!!!!

While I'm welcome to borrow any of the tack at the barn, no bareback pads exist. I've come to realize there is a decent number of Parelli-ites at the barn, and I'm not sure they are big on anything artificial except for carrot sticks. LOL.
I probably forgot to mention that I don't have any tack of my own here, sans halter/brushes and helmet. I won't be able to get my stuff until May, so I'm trying to do the best I can until then, or borrow from the barn, but I'm kinda wary of that.
I do have a fleece pad that was part of a kitty cave but it may not cover the whole bottom ;) Any Walmart-budget ideas??? LOL. I don't have horsey stuff lying around, but moreso household products :)

K. Here's what you do.
 <---I'm cracking myself up already
You go and get those butt enhancer panties.
nah.
Funnier...
Go to the fabric store and buy some foam. Sit on it and make an outline a la saddle fit tracings.
Then...get thee some Gator Grip.
Pull your pants down. Spray butt with Gator Grip. Adhere the foam.
Ride nekkid and no one will bother you with a carrot stick and will be totally distracted.

Just be careful of anything that is slippery like a fleece pad. I found using other items were just way too slippery for my taste. I think you'll just have to go "au naturel" until your stuff gets to you...

if the mare is underweight why are you riding her,
what your doing is taking away any goodness your putting into her by work one should wait until fattened up properly before one changes fat into mussle and one should work in straights so horse can learn to balance and use itself properly before circles and all circles should be large rathar than small so horse can build up on mussles of the legs without putting strains on them
ab - lib good quality hay and small feeds 2/4 times daily dont over faced an underwieght horse

Oh. My. Goodness! This was the kinda answer I was hoping for!! When SO came to look at new horsey he wondered what fellow new boarder was doing with her horse in the arena (all tacked up). I said "playing games" and continued to explain the carrot-stick theory. He then laughed as after 30 mins of games she never once got on all-tacked-up horse, nor did they move more than 20 feet.
I'd love to shock and awe the carrot-stickers (CS'rs) but it's a family friendly barn. I'm the newbie, and I think it's bad enough I ride brand new horse around bareback in halter and leads. *I do wear a helmet!* But Miss Hope is the biggest horse on the farm, her 16.2-3 towering self, and it seems to intimidate the masses of QH/TWH owners.

Isn't the mare in question the one that produced world qualifier babies? If so you posted pics and she is not that skinny where sitting on her is doing damage.
Go to wal-mart, go to the fabric section and get some foam. You'll have to get someone to hold it for you while you are getting on but it should help with the sore bottom

PS: I wasn't making fun of you, I was truly trying to think outside the box and started cracking myself up with the gator grip thing. Long story. I'm in a wacky mood though. No offense intended.

Out on the firing ranges we'd have to shoot for a good long while. The firing line was covered in gravel to make it easier to pick up all the brass.
We'd have to wear long sleeves and button them shut around the wrist to keep the hot brass from burning us. You can imagine kneeling or being prone on gravel for any length of time would really start to hurt.
Enter the maxi-pad. Stick those bad boys to the fabric and shoot away in the softly scented cotton filled cushioning. You could put those right over your butt bones.
You can choose from lite days, medium, heavy and the sooper dooper overnight pad!
But for god's sake don't fall off and go to the ER - you are certain to be the butt of many jokes.
Pun intended.:D

Egg crate mattress pad from Walmart. Under a saddle. Comfort for you and the horse.

You can buy a dog "bed" that looks just like a thick Western pad for under $10. You can just buy a pillow at Wal-mart for under $3. Unless you are bouncing WAYyyyyyy up in the air you should just be able to stick something cushy between you and the horses and it will stay there.
And for clarification, "nookie" is that special place women have and give to the man they love in an act of loving loveness. So you cannot actually get "nookie" from boys. Just cooties.:)

Thanks for the advice, she is on a great feeding regimen now. We did circles b/c it was my first time on her ever, and I was by myself so I wanted to be in a roundpen to be safe. We aren't doing anything more than walking right now. But I hope to venture into the big arena today! :D I wouldn't really call it riding persay, I'd call it her walking around for 5 minutes with me along for a joy ride. As someone else noted, her weights not that bad that a bit of bareback is going to be an issue. She just doesn't have enough weight to properly fit a saddle - or really be worthwhile to invest in a saddle that would fit for all of 3-4 months.
I really like the eggshell foam from Wal-mart idea!! Unfortunately I won't be able to try any of these ideas until next week, barn is on my way home (Walmart isn't) and the weather will get bad again. But keep the ideas coming!

You learn something new every day... The above is what I learned today. So I have a nookie.

Foam and Gator Grip sounds the best idea - better not ride on loose pad - they can be too slippery - I had the same problem (mare was not skinny, just my bottom needed some training) and decided to use the baby pram mattress... For a while it was going nicely, then... It was the first time when I tumbled down from horse.
Maybe you have longeing belt at the stable? You can use it to secure the pad and it will work nearly as bareback pad then. I can not remember the right name of the belt, but you must know - with all the rings to attach chambon at different levels.
