I like his lines. He has quite a few that I look for in my TBs for jumping. Do you have a photo of him? What is his background? Sound? Raced?

From a racing standpoint, he is a really well bred horse. Capote was a champion 2 y/o, multiple G1 winner, and a successful sire. His stud fee was $50K at his peak. Even today, he's still ranked highly among the top broodmare sires.
His dam was half to 2 stakes winners. Kingmambo is one of the most succesful sires in history, with 80 some stakes winners and still going strong. His '09 fee is $250K to give you an idea what a big deal he is.
Very nicely bred indeed...

I will absolutely second what Texarkana said, I looked at that pedigree and went WOW! From a racing standpoint gorgeously bred horse! PICTURES???

FYI, his dam, Royal Feat, just sold in foal to Harlan's Holiday for $50K this past January. Really not a bad price considering sales were down across the board. Here's her page:
http://apps.keeneland.com/sales/jan09/pdfs/587.pdf
And a random "sport horse" tidbit (sort of)-- his half sister Rosy Wreath was not only a race winner at two, but she was also reserve champion yearling in-hand at the MHBA show. See page 3 for a picture:

If this guy were my horse, I'd probably hang his paper on my wall and just stare at it.

Awe, the freebie is something special! Who knew?
Here's some pictures of him from today: http://i646.photobucket.com/albums/uu182/nasusartskyd/IMG_0490.jpg
He's a bit rough at the moment, but a real sweetheart and very very laid back. He's not a very good mover, but his feet are in terrible shape, and he seems a bit sore on them, so I'm hoping that when they get squared away he will move a bit better. I picked him up as a re-sale because of his wonderful personality...didn't realize that he was so well bred! Poor guy, I wonder how he ended up half-neglected in a field with all that fancy breeding!? I know nothing of his history, but he is clean legged and seems sound other than the feet.
Thanks for all the info guys, that's pretty neat!

I'll third what's already been said. Your boy comes from a wonderful family. We have a 3YO filly who's out of a Capote mare. She's big and pretty and very athletic. Also, Vaguely Rich, who is your colt's dam's half-sister lives at the same farm as my TB broodmares do. :)

I wonder what his story is. From what I can see, he was bred in MD, sold for $85K as a yearling at Keeneland, and then he never started. He was nominated for the Triple Crown in 2007, so obviously his connections had high hopes for him at one time.
If he was a mare, you'd have yourself a nice resale project for sure!
Best of luck with him! I'm glad he's found himself a chance at a new life.

Capote was/is one of the best sons of SS in the conformation department as well as a half brother to Exceller (SW/Sire), who was by Vaguely Noble and also shows up in the bottom line of your boy. You are doubled up on Northern Dancer on the distaff side, but I like Nureyev alot (saw him in person), Miesque was a great racehorse and producer, and the Nijinsky II is useful being a bit diluted, in sportlines. You actually have Nasrullah doubled up on top with SS and Bald Eagle. Glad he is in a better situation and hope he works out well for you. Where are you in Alabama -- I'm near B'ham.

From a sporthorse perspective, he should have a heck of a jump. :D
What are your plans for him?

A mealy-mouth Bay!! One of my favorite colors!! What a cutie~
I hope you have as much fun and success with him as I've had with my "freebie TB" who was supposed to be a "resale project" also. But I fell in LOVE and he's not going anywhere! :)

Thanks for all the kind words about the new pony! I hope he has a heck of a jump, as he is not much of a mover...very very short strided. I do feel that some of it is due to his feet, but as much as I hope, I don't think it is all foot related...
The plan is to fatten him up, teach him to jump, take him out a bit to see the sights, and then find a new home for him. He is so laid back and sensible that I think with just a little bit more training anyone will be able to ride him. Now of course, if fixing his feet turns him into a good mover and he does have that heck of a jump...I may just keep him...(although I DON'T need a horse right now!!!! I almost didn't get him because I've got plenty of client horses to keep me busy, but he just seemed cute in the one picture I saw of him, and it's hard for me to pass up a free horse!)
TKR: I'm in Auburn...
Again, thank you guys for all the info. I still can't believe he is so well bred and ended up sitting in a field! Amazing...

Hi Everyone! You all seem to be so knowledgeable about TB breeding. Could I get some input on my TB mare? Her registered name is Angle Dreams and she is by Houston (SS) and out of a south american TB named Memo. Thanks so much :)

You probably have a Calbred TB. Houston was an expensive son of Seattle Slew who is absolutely gorgeous but hasn't been much of a sire of racehorses. Memo, your horse's damsire, was a South American import who won races for Richard Mandella and is one of the better sires in California.

He second dam is by Skywalker who won the BC Classic.
Your mare's half sister went through the auction at Barretts last October. Here is her page
http://www.barretts.com/Catalog/catoc208/pdf/73.pdf
She brought $5000.
Hope all of that helped. Unfortunately I have no insight on whether these lines have any bearing on her sporthorse potential but short of WEG goals, I've always suspected that a big part of an amateur owner's happiness with their horse has to do with the partnership they can forge and that is up to you and the horse. Bloodlines may help pinpoint raw ability but you are not riding papers. :)

I really can't tell you much other than your mare's pedigree has some interesting similarities to Phillip Dutton's international horse The Foremam--whose registered JC name is Four Across.

On your mare Houston's dam is a full sibling to The Foreman's dam sire with the Smartaire and Quadrangle cross.

We owned Houston's half-sister for several years. She was a very good looking mare with a delightful temperament (let me know if you want to see a picture.) Though Houston was a failure as a sire of racehorses, I would imagine he'd do quite well as a sporthorse sire.

There are some TB breeding programs that inspire confidence in the quality of their horses. The Aga Khan is one, and Rokeby (Paul Mellon) was another. When you see a horse from them in a pedigree, you know the breeding was well planned and from the highest quality sires and dams. Both did a lot of international, turfy breeding, so you can almost count on their products making decent sport horses.
Quadrangle was a Mellon product. Never Bend was the sire of Mill Reef, who also was a Mellon product. :)

Since we're talking about Seattle Slew sons, does any one have any info on the Seattle Slew son Rougemont? This is my gelding by Rougemont, http://www.pedigreequery.com/speed+drive
I've shown him dressage (I don't show him under the name Speed Drive  ) and got my USDF bronze medal on him. He's got a wonderful temperment but definitely an overacheiver!

WWEB on here stands Houston's son, Noble Houston. He is a beautiful horse with a fantastic mind. He has produced some VERY nice babies.

Dear heavens that filly is gorgeous. Look at the engine and how uphill she is.
And with a pedigree to die for. She even has the Mill Reef/Habitat nick, and another line to Never Bend through Riverman to go along with Petite Etoile and the Mumtaz Mahal female family.
I wonder how much the Aga Khan wants for her, not that it matters since no matter how much, she's way out of MY league.

Oh my goodness! Your horse is bred similar to mine, except mine has Seattle Slew on bottom, Mr. Prospector on top. I think he looks like he could be a very nice horse. Here's mine:
http://www.pedigreequery.com/houston+tex
And he's SUPERB! Mine is 6 now and he could easily go Preliminary level eventing this year if I wanted to go that far myself. ;) Everything is easy for him and he has a great brain. Seattle Slew bred horses with some Mr. Prospector thrown in are NICE!
This one is from a Beginner Novice event last year. He's jumping much bigger now but in the same form.
