View Full Version : Tall Boot Advice?

I've been having a terrible time finding a pair of tall boots and I was wondering if anybody had any advice. I would just buy the same ones as I had last time, but I've never had tall boots before. Due to my complete and utter shortness I'm only just getting out of jodphurs. The other problem is my short, but very muscular legs.
So...
Does anybody know of any nice boots that aren't made for people that are like, twice my height? (I'm only 4'11 1/2")
My measurements are:
13" calf
12" top of calf
16 1/2 - 17 1/2" height (I already added the 1 - 2" for drop, thanks BAC)
size 6 - 6 1/2 feet

I don't know what boot to recommend but its standard to allow 1 1/2" - 2" for drop in field boots. Less if they have zippers as they tend to drop less. There is nothing worse than too short boots.

Ariat has tall boots in Short and Wide Calf. I have a friend who had to get them due to being very short with muscular legs. I am 5'5 and I wear Talls only because I like to have my boots all the way to my knees. When I'm walking on the ground, I like to have my boots touching my knee cap, that way when I ride, they don't drop down low. I hate having boots too short, it drives me crazy. Check out Ariat, they have nice boots that last a long time, they break in quickly and they come in a variety of sizes. good luck!

Oh, really? Oops. Thanks for telling me that. :) I deffintaly wouldn't want to have really short tall boots, kind of an oxymoron.
Thanks Equestryn. I'll look into that.

Check out the Dublin Aristrocrats. I, too, have huge calves and Ariat didn't come big enough for me. Dublin has a very wide range of sizes. I love mine - I ride in them for schooling and show and they are holding up great and are very comfortable.

I am 5' tall and I just got a pair of mountain horse richmonds. While they're on the taller side of your height range, they should fit fine in the calf--my calves are 13.5" and mine fit fine (size 6 foot).
They would be too short on anyone of substantial height, but they fit me great, so maybe give those a try?

How much do you want to spend? I just bought a pair of Sergio Grassos from The Tack Box in Middleburg and the quality of them is unreal. They went from cutting off my circulation to fitting like customs in about three hours, and they are take your breath away beautiful. If they dont make them short enough for you in stock, they will make them shorter/wider/whatever at your request if you can wait. I got mine from here: http://www.thetackboxinc.com/main.cfm?action=store&sub=product&id=128&fromCat=35 and they were extremely, extremely accomodating and helpful, but you can also find very helpful folks at Malvern Saddlery... www.malvernsaddlery.com

Well, as for price I was hoping for something that costs no more than $600 or so dollars, but I might be able to convince my mom to spend a little more. ;) Especially for Sergio Grassos.
I also found these at Dover:

Does anybody have any experience with these boots as far as quality goes? I figure that if I find a really nice pair of boots that fit me exceptionally well, but are just a tiny bit too tall, then I can go to Bevals and get them shortened.
Alterageous - My sister has a pair of Mountain horse tall boots, and they seem to be very nice. I'm a afriad that they're a little bit too thick in general silhouette to complement both me and my horse. It's unfortunate, because they are very nice.

The richmonds are not as thick or fugly as the other styles of mountain horse tall boots. Here's some pictures of mine:

Yes, you can get a pull on boot cut down, but cutting down a zip boot is an expensive proposition since you also need to have the zipper completely replaced. Would probably be $100+ to get that done.
I had the dover pros and they were great boots but TALL. Too tall for me, and I have a little more leg than you do.

My opinion is that you are way better off with boots that are at least 2" taller than the bend of your knees and I prefer the look of no zippers. Harder to work with short term but the long term look is lovely noty to mention the durability (one less part to break). I have semi custom der daus that cost about 450

Thanks for you opinons on the Dover Pro Boots. The reason that I like them so much is because of their very classic shilloutte, but you're right, they do look very tall. Wishful thinking I suppose.
Also, Alterageous, the pictures that you posted of your Mountain Horse boots were very helpful. They don't look at all like the other pictures I've seen of them. I'll make sure to try them on when I go to Dover this weekend.
I'm so excited that they've opened a store in Rhode Island, the store in Wellseley is absolutely tiny! If you're planning to go to tack store in that general area, you're much better off going to SmartPak.
But anyhow, now that I've sucessfully hijacked my own thread...
sarcam02:
I tend to agree with you on the whole zippers/no zippers thing. Although boots with zippers are certainly more convinent, they do not have the same appeal as boots without zippers. But I have a feeling that I may have to comprimise...

I would call the store and ensure they have what you want to try on. I went to another dover store and they had one pair of sergio grassos in an 8 wide, one pair of monacos in a 7 1/2 full, and a whole bunch of ariats I didn't want. I was pretty disappointed in their stock, and the salesgirl just shrugged and said "it's boot season." Well, thanks, but I had wanted to purchase boots so having a selection might help in that pursuit.
So I'd double check their stock before making any kind of trip.

the farm house has there challenge tall boots on sale. www.farmhousetack.com
from looking at my catalog, you would be a med regular (17.25 height x 13 width. or a short witch would only be 16.5 in ht same width..
You might be able to do an ariat kids field boot in a 5 i think its the same as a ladies 6 i THINK.. but its 16.5 x 12 3/4 calf..
idk.. but the challenge is the mid grade ariat. not the crowns and not the heritage.. they're really nice.. and right now at the farm house they are like 20 dollars more than the heritage price.. so they are like.. 275.. they are normally 350 i think..
if you can swing it though id get the monacos.. omg are they nice!!! and they fit like customs~!!!! maybe even better since they have that stretch leather panel in the back customizing the fit... and SOOO soft!! =D wish they'd been out when i got my crown pros.. cuz i would of gotten the monacos instaed!! =D

The monacos are a poor choice if you need a boot to hold up for every day. They are way too soft for that.
The new challenge II are light years more attractive and have better leather than the old ones. If you were going to get the challenge boot, don't waste time with the old ones. The new ones look much more expensive and refined, and the short height is good. I'd try those if you can find them (the dover store I went to claimed they hadn't arrived yet).
