How do you make a good dressage bun with long hair? Putting my hair under my helmet is no longer an option (doesn't fit). My hair is LONG (to the top of my jeans) but not that thick. It is straight, and pretty fine. Is there any way to make it behave and go in a bun? Thanks!

If you are wearing a crash helmet and need a compact bun, braid your hair down, double it back up and band it together. Put it in a "bun holder" mesh with a bow and put on your helmet.

If you are wearing a top hat or a hunt canp with room for a more elaborate bun, you can pony tail your hair at the nape of your neck, roll it up over your hand and secure it with a large clip, then put a fancy net bun holder on it with clippies or put a bow on it.

If you hair is not thick enough to fill out the whole "bun holder net", put in some tissue paper behind your hair.

I have long hair, too, and show in a hunt cap. Hair is not easy come show time.

Step 1. Either a) pull your hair back into a ponytail at the base of your neck or b)pull your hair into two pigtails at the base of your neck, behind each ear. Braid each pigtail to the nape of your neck and join together as one ponytail (this can sometimes keep the look neater all day and keep the whole thing together). Make sure the elastic holding the ponytail at the base of the neck is fairly tight.

Step 2. Loosely braid your ponytail to the end

Step 3. Wind it loosely around the base of teh ponytail into a knot at the base of your neck. Bring the whole length of the ponytail through the knot.

Step 4. Wrap the rest of the ponytail around the knot and then bring the end through one of the wraps of the elastic ponytail band between the ponytail and the base of the neck so it is underneath the "bun".

Step 4a: Perhaps use those tiny hair clips to affix the sides of this "bun" to your scalp at the sides so it doesn't flop around when your sitting the trot.

Step 5. Put on a fine hairnet to make everything tidy.

Step 6. Now, you could put a bun holder clip either *right above* (doesn't have to go through all of your hair and you could go "under" the sides of the hairnet) or *right below* the ponytail holder and stick the rest of the "bun" into the net area. The bun doesn't have to look pretty because the net covers it. Use bobby pins to afix the underside of the net to the "bun" and drive the bobby pins straight into the braided bun.

I practiced at home before the show and although it sounds strange, the above helped keep my long hair tidy but not under a helmet. FWIW, I can't put a helmet over a hairclip on my head because it gives me headaches. So this method keeps my hair out of my helmet but keeps it affixed to the nape of my neck.

Good luck!

J.

Thanks. I'd be wearing a helmet. J-lu, you couldn't provide pictures, could you? Not necessarily the steps if that's too hard, but the result if you have it in show pics? Thanks. This is all so hard for me to understand, I do N O T H I N G with my hair.

My hair isn't quite as long as yours, but you may try this...

Pony tail at the nape of your neck.
Split in in two.
Braid each section.
Wind one braid around the pony tail and secure with long hair pins. Not bobby pins.
Wind the second braid the opposite direction around and pin.
Give your head a good shake to make sure they are secure. If not, add some more pins.
Take a hair net and pull it up from the bottom, twist and put back around the bottom of the bun. That keeps all the fly aways under control.

That has always worked for me. With a helmet or a top hat.

For what it's worth, I don't care for the "show bow' things. I think they bounce with every stride.

I do the style you do CDE. But I don't like hair nets, so I use massive amounts of Aquanet. I found a Youtube video that illustrates this style very well. I always got compliments. Practice with your helmet on a few times before hand though. I put mine a bit lower that the girl in the video.

I love the Youtube hair videos. So many styles for long hair.

I have long-ish hair (used to be way longer) and I use a normal Dublin helmet for riding.

I braid, all the way to the end of my hair, and secure with plaiting band ;)

Then, I fond my hair under, with the band at the base of the plait, and keep folding till it's the size I want, and secure with hair band that blends in.

I then either put a hair net over, or smother it in hard set hair gel.

Then I put my ribbons through my hair band, and tie like normal.

Stay's in and fits nicely at the base of my helmet :D

I thing the double braid one is good, but it looks a bit to bulky to sit under your helmet..

OK, LOVED the youtube video if the double braid bun. I want to do that but I have very fine hair. It is between my shoulder blades, for now, what is a braid that works for thinner/finer hair? When that girl in the video divided her hair and braided half of it, it was WAY thicker than ALL of my hair in one braid.

My hair is exactly like yours.

I have been doing my above mentioned bun since I was 6 for ballet practice, and use it every time I ride (unless it's hot or I'm to lazy).

Plus, my hair has long layers, and it holds them all in.

When I did hunters, my hair was your length. I would braid my hair in two braids, right beneath my ears. Then take both braids and tie them at the base of your head. Whe I say tie, I mean cross them one over the other at the base and flatten them both out. Tuck each end under each alternating braid. Use lots of bobby pins, tons of spray and it will stay on all day. It doesn't matter how thick or thin your hair is.

It looks like it's french braided right under your helmet. As always, practice with your helmet on.

I hope you can visualize that! :)

My hair is pretty fine as well, the two braids are really skinny! But it always works for me.

My computer is allergic to You tube right now so I can't go look, because these sound like great ideas. My trainer does my hair for saddleseat, I have to wash and leave about half the conditioner in the night before so it is still damp when I get there. She brushes it all straight back and ponytails it and rats up the ponytail, then winds and rolls it from the bottom and hairnets the bun using about a dozen bobby pins through the hairnet. Then depending on the flyaway situation a hunter hair hairnet goes over the bun and the rest of my head. And a good misting of Frozen Stiff hairspray. I look like the lunch lady without my helmet on. I'm really waffling about wearing a nice bowler, but . . .

For every day I grab the hair at the nape of the neck and wind the hair around my hand once, then wind in between my hand and my neck, move my hand out and tuck the hair end in the little space where my hand was, then fold that over and use one of those thick covered elastics to go around the middle of the whole bun. Looks like Olive Oyl but it is pretty stable. Using bobby pins and a hairnet it looks much nicer.

I have long fine hair. When I was a kid I had to sell my event horse to go to college. My girlfriend who had Morgans offered me her old pleasure horse to have fun with and show. In the saddleseat arena you HAD to have your hair in a bun. My hair looked sad! I had such a puny little bun. My friends mom used this on me...

I really liked the look. If I can find a pic and I'm feeling brave enough to post a saddleseat photo on the dressage forum I will. I just remember lots of hairspray, bobby pins and a hair net or two. :)

Cowgirl first turned me on to the velvet thingie that makes buns. It is around $9.95 at Rite Aid. Unfortunately, I have sometimers, and cannot remember the name of it. :(

It is a long oval wire, covered with velvet, with a slit in the center like a large button hole. You pull hair back, ponytail elastic optional, put bottom through, and then roll up. The wire ends fold over, and voila, tight, comfy, elegant bun.

SOMEONE HELP ME WITH THE NAME?

For quite some time you could order one on the 'net for 'free' just the cost of shipping. (which ended up being, hm, around $9.95 lol!)

I have to wear my hair in a bun or non-grabable-sort-of-knot or french twist for work. I wear this thing most shifts.

Damn I wish I could remember the name. Seriously, you'll never go back. Medium to long hair... :uhoh:

Hairagami has something similar to what you're describing pintopiaffe. It looks really easy.
