Any changes?
Also, I have Firefox and the plug in won't work (missing a script it says)...............:( BUT IE works fine. :)

I'll check MareStare's tech support and see what is needed to view it with FireFox.
No changes really. I think the girls are still a couple of weeks out. Still a little more time before the chaos begins.

I'll check MareStare's tech support and see what is needed to view it with FireFox.
When I followed their FireFox instructions, it wouldn't do a complete download because it said it was missing some script.

Hey Barbara, is your mare getting close?
VirginiaBred

I think she looks restless myself.

Meeee tooo VB. I watched her for hours last night (which was reeeeeeeally late on your side of the world). I could have sworn she was going to foal last night. What will tonight bring......

Verona is up on camera 1 - http://www.marestare.com/cam.php?alias=silvercreek
LaDeDa is up on camera 2 - http://www.marestare.com/cam.php?alias=silvercreektwo
I think both are close and suspect that they will foal within the next 48 hours. :D I am out of town, but Summer has it covered.

Mar. 28, 2009, 11:54 AM
Yeah, that was me on the camera. :) It was a long night last night. Had a few of us fooled. I think they're doing it just to mess with our heads. Oh well, looks like another long night tonight...*sigh* Meanwhile we are having huuuuuuuge snow accumulation! So weird! It's been 70-80 degrees out, and yesterday it plummetted to 30s. Well, thanks for all the eyes last night. Looks like I'll be doing it again tonight....Until then.....
Kenike
Mar. 28, 2009, 01:01 PM
woohoo!! I'll be watching tonight for sure!!
Hey, now you know what those of us in Colorado went through. I was starting to get a decent tan going and BAM!! A foot of snow (6 inches of which blew away into drifts a few feet deep). It's already mostly melted and I suspect it'll be gone come Monday.

Is it just me or does she looked like she's just been body clipped?
SilverCreek
Mar. 28, 2009, 04:56 PM
Maybe the camera is better than I thought. :) The mares haven't been body clipped. They have had a shedding comb, which eliminated a whole muck bucket full of hair, but not a set of clippers. How funny that it looks that way. Thanks for watching!

We don't have any due this year, so I'll be glued to YOUR cams to get my fix. Can't wait for our babies next year. I miss the little ones - even when it means losing sleep.

Mar. 28, 2009, 08:38 PM
I am so excited for you! I did not breed this year - bad vet issues....
I am envious! She looks comfy!
What camera system are you using? I use BarnCams..
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
Heyday
Mar. 28, 2009, 08:42 PM
Goodness - does she always sleep flat out??? You MUST be exhausted! I use the Birth Alarm and she'd be triggering it 24/7 laying like that.
SilverCreek
Mar. 28, 2009, 08:52 PM
We use the Foal Alert system, so there is a sensor sewn into their vulva. And yes, she does sleep flat out a lot. But, she usually doesn't nap until about 1am. So this isn't typical. There has been a little bit of traffic through the aisleway and that hasn't affected her either - also not typical. Hopefully things will move along tonight.
Barbara will be on later, so she will explain the camera system.
They both are definitely uncomfortable. Cross your fingers for me!!! Maybe we'll even have a double header!! That would be exciting...

Patience grasshopper. :) If you watch it, it will come :)
Heyday
Mar. 28, 2009, 08:58 PM
I haven't tried that system but have heard good things about it. I'd love to know about the camera system. Mine really isn't that reliable and the InfraRed isn't great either. I really don't like leaving the lights on. So IR is a must for me.
Awe LaDeDa looks ready!
The stress - I feel like their mine..... Wish I could be there to help.
DarcyW
Mar. 28, 2009, 09:04 PM
patience....ah, where can I get some of that??
What happened with Raldeka? Did she already foal?
SilverCreek
Mar. 28, 2009, 09:12 PM
I know, patience isn't one of my virtues either right now. These are the first, and I just want to get the ball rolling already! "Deka" hasn't foaled yet. These other mares were shaping up faster and surpassed her. Hopefully it will give her a little friendly nudge to get started! I'm watching her on an internal DVR cam system though in case she gets sneaky.

I can't say for sure...the mares aren't dripping milk, but I've got a good feeling. They were very restless last night, and we've had storms since yesterday here. We've had some go with no signs at all and some draw it out for days. But, there's a strong possibility!
The good news is if you miss one of these, we have 16 more after this to come!!!!! Who's idea was this?!?!?! :)

They're both rather quiet now. Calm before the storm? Or just calm because of the storm?
Kenike
Mar. 29, 2009, 02:21 AM

Yes, they both have Foal Alerts sewn in. Sometimes when it is in the wee hours of the morning, and I'm half alert it takes me a second cause it looks like a bag flashing. :) We don't have any more storms going on tonight. I think they realized Barbara's out of town and they don't want a rookie assisting! It will be a win/win situation for both. :) And....I might be able to sleep a little tonight. Nice change after last night. But, we'll still do the 30 minute checks. I just want to see some babies! We've got to get down to business ladies...18 to go! :)

Mar. 29, 2009, 07:15 AM
Verona was sitting on the wall for a while and occasionally turning to look at her back end. Then she walked around lifting her tail a bit, then started picking at hay. She just pooped and is occasionally looking toward her back end. It looks like she is *thinking* about getting down to business but isn't quite sure yet. LOL!
OK, LaDeDa (great name by the way!) has been picking at hay but she just did some serious tail lifting and is now pressing on the wall and seems a bit hunched up. Looks like she is thinking about getting serious about things, too! Oops, false alarm - now she is eating hay again.

Ha, ha, I was thinking the same thing :) Love those stalls! I remember seeing your grey mare foal last year, such a clear picture.

I haven't been saying much this year but I sure have been checking the cams! I haven't watched every night...I won't get into full swing until the Glen Hill mares are ready ;) I can't not watch Silver Creek though! Tordis will always be my favorite :D
Verona sure seems antsy as of late. I haven't watched her for long periods of time so maybe this is normal for her but I'm thinking maybe we will see a foal tonight (but I'm not saying that out loud!! ;) ). I have to go grocery shopping soon and I'm thinking sooner than later just in case she decides to get down to business!!

LaDeDa looks very suspicious right now, very suspicious indeed! Me thinks she's turned into a statue
I left for a couple hours, come back, and she's still standing just the way I left her! Verona on the other hand...she still looks antsy, raising her tail, shifting her weight/moving around the stall a lot, then backing up to the wall and standing there for a while with her butt on the wall almost like she's trying to keep something from falling out
Regardless - neither one look in a hurry to get down to business so...we wait!

I need to get to bed so we can venture to the aquarium in the morning. Let's hope I sleep....it's edgy around here since a 14-yr-old girl was apparently murderd this afternoon. LOTS of lights on outside in the community, EVERY parent on edge, and it's just horrible.

Congrats on your foal, Signature!
They really can foal anytime. I have found that the more that we are in and out and mess with them, the less they care about our presence and we get more daytime foals.

Has LaDeDa gone early before?
showjumpers66
Mar. 31, 2009, 05:31 AM
Last year, as a maiden, LaDeDa foaled at 330 days. She isn't dripping milk, but I expect it at any time. Gazelle foaled at 328 days last year and also looks like she will foal very soon. Vega is only 316 days, but looks like she will go this week.
Verona is dripping milk and has been since 8:00 am Monday morning. She is 345 days today.

A little bit sweaty. She is really uncomfortable. Dripping milk. Her body shape has changed drastically, which you can see on the camera, as the foal has moved into position. There were tons of tiny poop piles everywhere. Typically she holds up the wall and only poops in a couple spots.

How long can you wait usually before baby nurses? They both seem so exhausted from the effort.. or did I miss baby nursing?
Just read on MS that the filly was first shoulder locked, then hiplocked. Verona did tear a bit and vet is coming. Poor girl, she looks curious about the foal but still too exhausted to do anything about it... She is still kind of weak in the hind and she is hopping... hope this goes away soon. Do horses have sciatica??? I do understand the pain...

Ideally they should to be up and nursing in two hours! (for best Igg results) I always assist my foals when they show interest in getting up. I straighten their front legs out and pick up the rump. The sooner they get up the better.

Thanks for the concern!! The baby was hiplocked really bad and the mare has torn a little, so we don't want to give her anything till the vet comes. He should be here any minute to make sure Verona is okay. There is a little bit of bleeding. She is a maiden so this was her first foal. Quite a doosie! You have a couple of hours to get the foal to nurse. If Barbara has to milk some out into a syringe she will. One down, 19 more to go! (We now have 2 more to foal out for other people.) :)

We usually try to let them bond and nurse naturally for the first little bit. Sometimes when we try to guide them in to nurse, they just end up fighting harder. Not to mention that the more the foal is handled, the more protective and aggressive the mare was getting. We just wanted everything to remain as calm as possible till the vet got here. The reason that Rachael is pulling her head away is because Verona was striking at the baby earlier and almost hurt her really bad. Rachael knows what the sign is that shows when she is about to strike. She's a maiden mare, and she's getting a quick lesson in having a foal.

Ya, I can't rest until I know my foals have had their milk!!! I stick my finger in their mouth to see if they have suckle reflexes then I use that to guide them to the mares nipple.. Maybe they aren't too worried and just do transfustions as a regular course of action? I know some farms that do that.
Sonesta
Mar. 31, 2009, 11:28 AM
There really is not need to talk of transfusions yet. The baby is still a bit under 2 hours old. All is well. Let's not borrow trouble.
This is a common scenario with a maiden mare. That baby is strong and looking for the milk spigot. Don't worry about her. And she'll get colostrum if Barb has to milk it into a bottle to feed it to her.

Thank you for the support!
Due to the very large size of the foal (I think this is the largest foal we have had), Verona does have temporary nerve damage and is ataxic. Normally, I'll milk the mare and get colostrum in the foal within 30 to 60 minutes of delivery if the foal has not latched on, but Verona would not allow me to and I felt that she was too wobbily to sedate at that point. She does not have this mother thing figured out yet and her ataxia wasn't helping. She was struggling with her balance, while one minute loving on the foal and the next striking at her. The foal was exhausted from the delivery, so I made the decision to allow her to rest. Just a judgement call on my part from 20 years of foaling out mares. Once Verona seemed to get her bearings, I did sedate her so that we could get the foal nursing. The vet arrived. The tear is large, but no major damage was done. She was given Dexamethasone, DMSO, and Banamine to treat the inflammation. She should be back to normal in 3 to 5 days. The foal's eyes are swollen almost shut due to bruising from the dystocia, but it should resolve on its own.

She was due on the 21st, but she isn't ready to go yet. We will put her back under the cameras when she gets closer.
Glad that Verona foaled a healthy filly.. what happened to Raldeka??? I thought she was due before Verona?

How is LaDeDa this evening?

We had the filly out in under 30 minutes and she currently shows no signs of oxygen deprivation. We will for sure treat with DMSO immediately, if that is the case, and have it on stand-by. I don't like to give the foals meds if I can avoid it as many will break with rip roaring diarrhea afterwards which in itself can be life threatening. I stay on top of them and we will quickly address anything symptomatically.
So glad to hear that all will be okay.
Did he give the foal DMSO also for the swelling and trama from foaling?

I wasn't kidding when I said she literally had her legs crossed the whole time. I kept checking to see if she had shifted position but she hadn't. It was hilarious!

Baby seems to be very entertained with the discovery that she can walk under mom's belly...and Verona looks like she's taken to motherhood very nicely. She's very attentive.

I'm so bummed, I missed it! But congrats on a big beautiful filly and Verona catching on to being a mom. I'm glad everything turned out well. Poor LaDeDa.

They look really good now and Verona is being really good at letting baby nurse.

On Page 40 on the Verona thread, there is a link to the video of the foaling. And wonderful comments/explanations from Barbara. Thank you for explaining it so clearly.

Wow, well done, ladies! Sounds like things started happening right after I left for work yesterday. I told my husband as I was leaving that I just knew Verona was going to foal within the next hour or so. Our office servers block the feed from MareStare, so I wasn't able to watch. Sorry your first foaling of the year was a tough one, but I'm so glad everything turned out well. Congrats on the beautiful filly, and here's hoping all the rest of your foalings go perfectly!

I having to work and can't get to marestare....is Verona still ataxic? How long do you think that will last? Any concern about the DMSO and banamine passing to the foal via milk?
This has been a great learning experience....thanks!

Wow...that was incredible! Nicely done, Barb.
I did get a kick out of the good habits everyone had to close the stall door, though. Poor Verona was obviously NOT going anywhere during that foaling, yet each person made sure to shut the door behind them. That was awesome!
They both look much happier & stronger today. Always a plus!

Does anyone know what happened to La De Da? I think she is out of the stall because I went to it this morning, and it was being cleaned with the door wide open. Now it looks empty or she's just out of camera range.
