LOL, I totally thought this too until I saw a COTHer's absolutely adorable little girl in them w/ a navy jacket...
So I had to get some... :) we'll see if I hate them when they come in (because I am not as cute as that little girl). But I definitely understand why you would think that!!

If so, you can look HOT while remaining protected.
Maybe you are too young to appreciate rust.
Maybe you don't have "butt candy" (and thigh candy?) that makes rust a good idea for both the wearer and the beholder. Love those terms, which I learned here.
To each his/her skinny or fat, young or old own.

Back in the 60s they were very popular and looked fantastic! Especially with a matching horse. ;)

I'd much rather have rust over baby puke green, that was all the rage in the mid 90's. I happily stuck with my "off-beige" TS for many years, and will continue to do so b/c I personally think that, and white, look classic. Just like I'm sticking with my CO Hampton, and Dark Grey jacket and white shirt. I love the classic look. Rust is A-OK in my book though, I own a pair, though I'd never show in it, it'd clash with my horses. LOL.

my flame suits on too...
I acctually think rust looks really bad. I'm sorry but I don't understand what all of you guys see in them. And also what shows do you se people wearing them at?? I show almost every weekend and have never seen them in the show ring. The exceptions being on COTH and my one friend who ripped her breeches on the first day of and over night show and her only back-up pair were her mom's old rusts from the eighties. Needless to say we were all making fun if them including her.

I love rust for schooling or in the jumper ring but really hate it in the hunter ring. My problem with it is that I don't think there is a hunt coat made that doesn't clash with them or just look plain weird. I find the overrall look of rust breeches, a ratcatcher and hunt coat to look really busy and distracting. It could just be that I'm only 20 and wasn't alive when they were popular last but I just can't seem to wear them with anything other then a white or very pale yellow polo. I really do love my schooling pair, though.

Sue Sisco, in SE Pennsy (Sunfield Farm) has worn rust britches for years (at the local shows). When she's not showing greenies at the local level, she does the International Hunter Futurity, and is a sidesaddle queen. So she knows her outfits. No one is more obsessed with turn-out than those side saddle gals. I dare anyone to go up to her and tell her she looks old fashioned in her rustys at the local level. She can ride the pants off of anyone, no matter what color they are.
I wonder if all of us yapping about rustys aren't harkening back to our more youthful days: when we were skinny, the jumps weren't scary, and we all braided in light blue yarn for our chestnut ponies (or at least I did!) We only THINK we look skinny in rust. Just like black. Black on me...makes me look like a fat chick, wearing black. But in my mind, ooh, I'm walking the runway.

I personally think beige breeches are just not cute. I wear them, sure, but for about 90% of females, wearing skin tight beige pants in a material kind of akin to saran wrap is severely unflattering.

My grey TS breeches are my absolute favorites to school in. If I was still showing in the hunters (or at all!) I would seriously consider showing in them. I have two pairs of the charcoals and two pairs of the ash grey (as well as multiples of several other colors :uhoh:). They seem to be the most flattering of the colors...those and my mocha pair.

I still love rust...hides dirt better. Some of the beiges and buffs make people look nekked from the waist down...and there's many people I don't want to picture nekked, LOL! But those colors do go better with more shirts and jackets.
I also miss the greys...light dove grey breeches with a charcoal grey jacket and a pale blue shirt....looked smashing! That was one of my show outfits way back when...with newer black helmet and black boots.
Other outfits were either rust breeches, navy jacket and white or blue shirt with either brown or black boots. (wore the older schooling helmet with the oxblood boots...well worn helmets turned rusty brown)
And buff breeches, navy jacket, pinstriped or blue shirt and brown boots and helmet. I still LOVE the look of brown boots...cordovan and oxblood.
Things I do NOT miss/like...stock pins and madras jackets and canary anything. Who the hell invented madras jackets anyways? For a short while there we all looked like Austin Powers or like we should be selling used cars, LOL!

I ride in CT and there is only one person who rocks the rust color breeches. I must say, I am not really a fan. I guess it was one of those 'had to be there' kinda things. Maybe it woulda been different if I grew up with everyone wearing them, not sure. I know everyone here wears the TS greenish "beige", i used to go with the ariat "beige" which wasnt as green, and I stuck out alot in the show ring, so I just had to pick up a pair of the TS again. I can't help it, im just a sucker for the way they look. Plus I ride horses of many colors, so they go very nicely, and I had to get an almost black hunt coat, looks marvelous.

I'll tell you why I like rust: I'm a slob. I am my own groom, and dirt is magically attracted to me. The lighter the color, the more Pig Pen-like I become. Puke green hides dirt? Pffft, not on me!
I was a junior in the 80s, when we were all still wearing Harry Halls. Yes, we wore beige breeches and navy coats for the Eq, and on the day of the stake class. But rust was in the rotation as well for other days

It is all a cycle, children! Before the side-zip TS's in the puke-green came into the world, my show breeches were all front zip and: very light tan, dove grey, and rust. (Before that, when I was still doing schooling shows, I rode in very dark green wool jods and a burgundy hunt coat! :() As a junior, though, I had the rust, grey and tan breeches and: a dark grey jacket and two navy coats with white pinstripes. I wore white, light yellow and light blue rat-catchers. Then the puke-green hit the scene and with them I wore: black coats with faint pink and blue pinstripes, and ratcatchers in solid colors that matched the pinstripes in the coats.
No more rust, no more grey. It was a sad time (although the thicker cloth and looser shape of the TS's was much more flattering than the super skin-tight and thin light tan and grey everyone wore previously!) I don't miss the rust but I now like to show my jumper (who is very light grey) in my new dove grey breeches with a greyish-blue ratcatcher and a dark grey with pinstripes coat. His boots, of course, ;) are black leather. Good taste, in my opinion, is all about what looks best on you and the horse, not what the Jones's are wearing.

Whats funny is that I LOVE the rust COLOR. I have several sweaters that color...
I just don't think it looks good as breeches against any horse.
Heh...and I HATE the color except for in breeches and think it looks great with most color horses, dark bays at the top of the list, greys last.
'Course, I grew up with the light tan, light grey (While very pretty and looks smashing on a grey horse...it's HORRIBLE to keep clean) and rust options for showing. Canary had already bit the dust in most areas, although I still thought it was pretty. Jackets were black, blue, hunter green or grey (or some shade of the those colors).
Actually, I had a brown tweed-ish coat that would be considered quite stylish these days...but I HATED it. I had to buy all my show clothes myself..so ended up with a lot of sale items. My first coat was the brown one and NO ONE was wearing brown at that time. It was O-U-T. I was soooo happy the day I bought my plain navy coat. I LURVED that coat...and still have and wear it to this day. It's not special or anything...it's just not the brown one.
Fads come and go...why limit yourself based on what someone else likes/dislikes? If you like rust or grey breeches, chances are you will be showing under someone who does as well. Go for it, wear what you wnat and have fun.

my flame suits on too...
Well it is too bad that you are not in charge of the clothes police.

I am afraid to wear stock pins! After having one come undone years and years ago, and then folding over too far while my horse jump really big, I ended up getting stabbed in the neck with the pin!! It was very minor, but enough for me to never put one on again.
P.S. I HATE rust breeches too!:no: WTF were the equine clothes manufacturers thinking?!?

As a general rule I'm not very fond of rust breeches, they just aren't very attractive. However, I have seen the occasional person wearing them and thought that they looked great. For example, the Wildhorsefeathers catalog had this adorable little girl in it wearing rust colored breeches. But maybe it was just the girl...

Alright, here's some pics of the new rust breeches. It's not very good lighting because my mare (1st picture) looks the same as my gelding... and my mare is usually a coppery/red color and the gelding is a super dark bay. Feel free to bash/love the visual of my new breeches!!! (ignore the black jacket and the fact that I look like I'm ready for Halloween...)

Rust = orange, basically. Orange doesn't go with many colors, and in fact clashes horribly with some shades because it's not a neutral color.
Neutrals like beige, white, cream etc work for breeches because they'll provide an understated foil to almost any coat color, as well as leather color. Rust doesn't.
You can have several tones of a neutral all working together - you cannot have several tones of rich, reddish orange together and have harmony, unless you work in a majolica pottery factory. Believe me - I have a chestnut. Putting oranges, terracottas and reds on him is a disaster.
I've seen a few pics of people sporting their rust breeches with navy jackets, or caramel saddles, or grey horses and it's just awful.
Now, if you can wear neutrals in the rest of your outfit, and your tack doesn't clash, and you can pick another item in a perfectly matching rust to tie it all together (polo wraps, pad trim) then great. But clearly this is not a showing outfit.

Those look great. My mare is a bay with copper coloring too. I think they'd look great on her. Much more striking than vomit green or a washed out beige.

*applause* thank you!!! some of the color combinations people are sporting with the rust would make the hosts of "What Not To Wear" pass out on the spot! i also am not a fan of rust britches. (though i MIGHT wear a pair schooling.. with a white shirt.. and white saddlepad.. and very dark tack.. on a horse whose color will not clash.. maybe.) i've been reading this thread with bemusement.
and i have to say it... i REALLY LIKE the puke green color. there.

You say that as if we all frequently wear gray blazers over puke green pants with pink or light blue shirts in the real world...

LOL you have me there!
we DO sport some odd color combinations in the hunter world... but at least puke green is a neutral!

More rust for me then! :) I loved rust growing up, and still love it. I have the rust TS schooling breeches, but recently picked up a pair of the rust TS Royals. I can't wait to wear them.
I was never a fan of the grey breeches growing up, but would like to see a modernized version of it before I say I still don't like it.

chawley- here is a pictorial of me showing my baby jumper at a schooling show with grey TS- my coat is dark grey with a very faint blue windowpane, and I was wearing a pale grey-blue ratcatcher. I'm putting up links to the 3 picture series not because these are stellar examples of me and my horse, but because it cracks me up and I thought I'd share.

The absolute NICEST looking show outfit I have ever seen in my almost 30 years of riding was a little girl who showed her pony in grey breeches, a light blue shirt, grey jacket, grey helmet and black gloves and jod boots... her hair was in braids with blue ribbons. That grey was stunning to me. That was a LONG time ago.
I come from Dressage-land, I am traditional... black coat, white (yes, stark white, I don't wimp out and do off-white) breeches, black boots, black hat and white square pad. HOWEVER, when I school, anything goes. My favorite pad is orange and I love color.
I will say that rust does not offend me, but, I am from that era. I never showed in rust, but I had a pair. The only color that offends me is the canary. :dead:

I loved showing in my rust Jods when I was little! I hated my hunter green coat though, and shudder when I see people showing in hunter green show coats. I also used to show in grey breeches when I moved up to tall boots. I never see grey breeches anymore. :(
I used to show in greys as well when I was a kid, with a navy jacket. I think it looks great...I wonder why it has gone away and rust is making a come back? Rust pants and a green jacket...that is gross.

Dover has some lovely grey breeches, but I don't know if you mean you never see grey ones at shows, or at all (as in catalogs).
When I was little, green breeches just were not worn. There was some dress code or something that you just could not wear green breeches. I am still shocked when I see people in green breeches today, for that very reason, even though the code/dress rule seems to have gone by the board.
I personally loved canary breeches!
All in all, I think "to wear rust or not to wear rust" is a matter of personal taste.
