I was just setting up my dvr recordings and found that The long shot is playing on the hallmark channel at 10pm eastern time. Sunday March 8th.
Seems as though I remember this was based on a COTHER. If you know please elaborate on the story.
Synopsis A dressage champion guides an equestrian after an accident that blinds her horse.

I belive a COTHER ownes one of the horses (Red) in the movie. Great movie. Has anyone seen the one with Don Johnson and its about the first Paint to compete in Hunters. It was really good even my non-horsey husband liked it. He could hardly believe there was horse color prejudice.

The film "Moondance Alexander" is forbidden from being openly discussed in the COTH forums. Praising the film will result in a permanent ban and lifelong ridicule from your fellow forum posters. You have been warned.

I did like the movie...but did find myself chuckling when one minute the horse was a senior quarter horse and when he stepped into the ring, he became a young, FEI warmblood.

Ahahaha, that always happens in horse movies. I remember in Black Beauty, my mom, grandma, and I all immediately said "that's a filly!" in unison when they did a shot of "him" as a young horse. Haha. Also in The Black Stallion, I was always like, okay, there's the arabian, there's the thoroughbred, there's the one with a star blacked out, etc...
My boyfriend refuses to watch horsey movies (and most animal shows in general) with me because I always notice that silly stuff that non horse people don't see... Though I mean, it's not THAT hard to tell... I guess we are just more attuned to these kinds of things = )

Not quite as funny as the miniseries Lonesome Dove where the gray "mare" named Hell B$itch had a sheath.

The Longshot - I HATE that movie. So stupid. And the "based on a true story" nonsense - yeah, vaguely...she showed a blind Appy Training level.... that's a long way from upper level/for money competition/musical freestyle/proof of her great training abilities. Heck, I evented a one-eyed horse Prelim and won. Nobody made a movie about me. ROFLOL!

Except you're probably talking about his previous owner 'cause I haven't had him that long... he's been my baby since last september.
Horrible movie, but I think some of it's cute in a really full-of-cheese way.
But "Red" (Davi) is the most handsome horse in the movie (I'm not biased or anything!)!!!! I own it on DVD because I feel I'd be a bad mom if I didn't... :)

Every time this movie comes up I mean to check the USEF/USDF rulebook. I'm pretty sure you can not show a blind horse at these levels. Sight in one eye OK, but not blind.
Also does anybody think the other riders wouldn't question a) a blind horse (per rules if it is illegal) and b) unannounced change of horse beyond the last minute?

Nope....Worst horse movie ever is "Lightning the White Stallion". About some sort of "white" horse being found by a girl who lost her father and is going blind....ends up qualifying from a local show to regionals, to the National show (I believe) and competing in grand prix-ish show jumping against "one of the best riders in the country".
Not only is the premise absurd...the production staff and editiors need to be fired!
Examples: Horse changes from a "white" grey to a true albino, and back again. During a jumping round sequence the horse enters the ring unbraided, then over a fence the mane and tail are braided, then only the mane is braided, then upon close up of the girl (who is definitely posting and who has hair flying out from under her hunt cap...it was back in the 80s or early 90s) the mane is flying free again.
Hy-ster-ical! And sadly I know it and it does make it into my VCR on occasion.

I am probably hanging myself but here goes nothing- whether you like the movie "The Long Shot" or not, it put "dressage" albeit a romantic view into every household in the US that tuned in to watch. My feeling is if it brought one person not previously participating in horses or dressage as a discipline into the equine world, then I could deal with all of its inaccuracys. People will root for the underdog and while this underdog may be not be competing within regulations the average person will be unaware of those facts. They will watch the movie for the entertainment value, the fact that the entire family can watch it without censor, and maybe just maybe if we are lucky they will think about taking lessons, buying a horse, boarding the horse, etc. Time enough later on for them to become jaded.

Flicka - the original, not the trashy girl-can't-stay-on-a-horse remake - is pretty good and fairly close to the books. Somehow they lost the older brother, and acquired an unrelated bratty little girl, and of course, NO ONE ever mentions the "elephant in the room," that is, how did this Wyoming ranch couple acquire a teenage son with a BRITISH accent, but over-all a decently made, well-acted picture.
I was highly annoyed by the Aussie movie (w/Russell Crowe) about a palomino Brumby (don't know if this is the one someone else mentioned), which ends with the cliche of the horse so wild it KNOWINGLY jumps off a cliff to its death rather than be captured. Pretty bad. At least the totally fictional movie built around Shergar posited the cliff leap as semi-accidental/no other choice/tragic.

Yup. Saw 'em both. I have a very POOR quality video tape of the OLD movie (circa 1939) FLORIAN, with Robert Young. He actually sits fairly decently, but sorta does a leg yield instead of half-pass, etc., but there is nice footage of the Lipizzans, and of course, a happier ending than in the Felix Salten book (author of Bambi) from which the movie was derived. In the book, old Florian gets led off to an unknown post WWI fate - perhaps slaughter, perhaps as a work horse.....a symbol of the fall of the Habsburg Empire.

The Colt. Civil war movie about a mare who gives birth and they are supposed to put him down but they don't... SOoooo bad. Its terrible, like gawdawful shot myself in the head terrible. lol an x gave it to me b/c he thought I might like it, military/horse stuff.
yawn. barf.... yawn
My favorite horse movies are The Lighthorsemen, which is more about the unit, but its very neat story (based off real events) and how the horse's handled the desert in Gaza.
and what the hell is that other one... Oh yeah... the man from snowie river. Shoot me I know. I love the scene where he is sliding down a hill... don't ask me why, I just do.
That and I don't think they switch the frigging horse's back and forth all the time. they do that with fresians a lot b/c they can't get them going fast enough for chase scense w/ the rest of the QH so they have to switch to a smaller horse... I LOVE when they forget to black out little things... like snippets. snicker. oh how we adore hollywood.

The actual jumping footage and Nautical's success is true, of course, but the story was totally Disneyfied. He was bred to be a jumper, sired by a QH stallion (Muchacho de Oro) out of a chestnut Army Remount mare - probably TB, so he was essentially an Appendix QH, reg. Peter de Oro. He WAS difficult (a big jump, but something of a stopper before Hugh Wiley bought him) , but he was never a working ranch horse nor a "misfit" of any kind.

The Silver Stallion (Silver Brumby) was loosely based on what I recall was an excellent children's book. The movie IMHO is fantastic by way of cinemetography.. can't recall the plot or horrid sounding ending... but such great scenes... just found it the other day on VHS and transferred it to DVD.

yes yes yes! was that a disney movie about a huge grey called "aspercreme" or something? Mar. 5, 2009, 01:19 PM
hmmm... I'll have to find the movie then...
It was a disney movie, had a similar cast of characters as most Herbie (the lovebug) movies of the day... the story was kind of similar to the story of Snowman, a huge well bred dapple grey ends up on a farm teaching kids when someone discovers his knack for jumping (escape artist if I recall). Meanwhile, the family father is going to loose his advertising job (as well as the farm) because he cannot get a hit for his client with the goofy aspirin creme product.
Despite some setbacks and drama, the horse is an overnight showjumping success, especially because he has wonderful style and characteristically flags his tail over every jump which indicates he's feeling good and will jump a clean round :D. They do hire a proper jock for him too if I recall, its not the dad's 10yr old kid riding, but they name the horse Aspercreme (or very similar). Aspercreme goes on to win the Grand National (whatever biggest show ever :) ), advertising client rakes in the millions because of the horse's fame, and dad gets to keep his advertising job, and the family farm. Aspercreme, now having reached his potential, is happy to be retired as a farm horse packing kids up and down a dirt road....
I'm trying to recall from something I haven't seen in over 20 yrs, so I'm sure I've botched the story line...

Snowman - story of horse Snowman and owner ?? DeLeyer I've never seen a movie on Snowman, but have the old book.

the movie that made me mad for horses in the first place was the original Black Stallion (every sequel, etc, stinks). I adore everything about that movie, especially mickey rooney.... I think I burnt out the vhs player in my parent's room when I was a kid watching it over and over and over :D
When I bought my first horse, I immediately set about plotting how I could ride around nekked (him, me not so much :D) like the pair on the beech... though, it wasn't nearly as harmonious as the movie... we did a bit of crashing and I dove off I think at one point

Some kind of eventing camp.
As I recall, Annette Funicello had a fear of riding a particular part of the course, I can vaguely recall a steep drop with a ditch or log at the bottom...
They put her on a very reliable horse called "Corny" and if she couldn't do it on Corny, she just wasn't going to "cut the mustard" (make the team, stay in the camp, whatever).
She was the "dark haired" girl and I think there was of course, a blonde girl who could actually do the course.
Also, the usual teenager falling in love at camp shenanigans...I would love to see it again now that I actually know what eventing is.
And there WAS some kind of German dressage teacher, sort of a military type.
Anybody else have any more info on this?

I haven't thought of it for years, but the Horsemasters was one of my favorites as a kid. I never saw the movie, though. What I remember best was the main character was assigned a big sturdy old galoot of a horse called Corny - he had big feet, regularly trashed his stall, and was a lug to ride in the school ring. Though she was fond of him, she continually disparaged him and wished she had been assigned the pretty, dainty mare with "teacup" feet. That is, until she finally rode Corny through a thorny cross country course and realized what a great fellow he was after all.

whoa, my question is: Does the horse/dog/cat/deer/any animal die in the movie? If so it is bad.
If people die, OK.
I dont care if it is stupid if the horses look good.
And I cannot drink every time they whinny or I'll throw up. But I will have a couple of glasses of wine or beer.
Next you'll tell me Lassie was a boy! Oh wait, she/he was.

The film "Moondance Alexander" is forbidden from being openly discussed in the COTH forums. Praising the film will result in a permanent ban and lifelong ridicule from your fellow forum posters. You have been warned.
Huh? Robin Hughes had or still has the paint who came from the north GA mountains as a trail horse and won the the hunterjumpers championship down in Tampa, I think it was Tampa. Is that something we can make a movie out of? And in keeping with the drinking theme, she named him Scotch and Soda.

One of my very favorite Disney movies and was the catalyst for getting me into horses full time! I bought the book and movie off Ebay last year!
Porlock Vale is(was?) an actual riding school in the southwest of England that offered the BHSAI course-horsemasters". Students came from around the world to go there and earn their certificate and the movie came from the book. Annette and Tommy kirk are two Americans who join a host of others including the handsome talented horseman who bucks the system all the time. Annette is the daughter of a famous rider who got hurt off a horse and the memory freezes Annette. One of the tests they must pass is cross country which included a coffin and in the case, a major slide after a jump-a bit different from real ones! Annette won't do it and she is afraid she won't pass so takes Corny out at night to do it when no one is watching. There are a lot of side stories including the romances, the head instructor and her horse, Pennant, and a very stern military instructor-maybe German. Fun read and watch. (I need to put that on DVD myself before it fades!)

I went searching to see if Horsemasters had made it to DVD, and I find that you can buy it on VHS for $100 plus. Yikes.

I just stumbed across this thread. I am a film editor and edited "The Long Shot."
A few comments:
This is a LOW BUDGET MOVIE. We are not in the same league as Hidalgo and big budget movies.
True, there were different horses, playing the same one. The reason for this is that the actress was not a rider so they put her on a western "been there, done that" horse, and the doubles, who were experienced dressage riders, did the main riding on the real dressage horses.
I had a really hard time trying to keep things matching the best I could. I asked if they would pull the western horses' manes as they were long and falling on the left. The wranglers refused. I was upset that the horses facial markings didn't even match! But again, out of my control.
Hallmark makes movies for a particular audience, not COTH people who are going to pick the riding accuracies to death.
I did the best I could with the footage I had. I do hunters, and know dressage basics, but even had the real dressage riders come into the editing room and make sure that I had done the best I could with the footage available. I wanted the riding sequences to be as accurate as possible.
Yes, it was a challenge!!!!
And yes, this is LOOSELY based on a true story, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread.
I do not dispute that it is a "cheesy" movie, but that is what Hallmark wants :)
Frankly, I was just happy to be working on a horsey movie....wish we did more of them!!!

Hey, it's tough to make a horse movie that horse people won't pick apart--we're a tough crowd and we know it.
I liked the movie, but I love a little CHEESE with my WINE/WHINE--except for the part where the crazy ex goes and beats the horse's leg to make it lame...that was a bit unrealistic. Hope it didn't really happen cuz if someone came at my horse with a two-by-four...grrrrrr:mad: I did watch it in secret though...just my sister and I (no boyfriends allowed...)
Of course, my sis and I joke about how many lifetime/hallmark movies we watch...I was thrilled to have one with dressage HORSES in it!
I loved Lightening the White Stallion as a kid...esp the dramatic end scene with the horse kicking the crap out of someone THROUGH the ramp on the back of the trailer. :) Nice.
Other horse movies I loved as a kid (and would still watch):
National Velvet (of course),
the black stallion and all the tv shows of it (the young black stallion),
Man from Snowy River, MFSR II (not as good as the first one, but I'm humming the tune in my head right now),
my sister used to watch the TV show "Young Riders" about the Pony Express religiously...,
and "Hey Dude" (also a tv show),
All Creatures Great and Small (not really about horses, but animals count right?)

Sylvester with Melissa Gilbert. Her riding is not so great, but the rest of the horsey stuff is pretty good, and as a bonus, you get to see Richard Farnsworth ride. And the music rocks.

Thanks Holly! Cheese with WHINE is good for the soul!!!!
It is funny, I cut that movie years ago. I just popped the dvd in scanned through it. Brought back a lot of memories. Yikes, it is sooo corny!!! Oh well, I had fun cutting it, despite the frustrations. And it does have a happy, Hallmark ending, which is required ;)
The leading actress, Julie Benz, has gone on to bigger and better things - she stars as Dexter's love interest in DEXTER, and has done lots of other good stuff as well.

Porlock Vale Riding Academy in England, training for BHS Instructor's Exam. When I was in high school I REALLY wanted to go there. Movie may have had Germans, but I think in book all instructors were Brits.
Movie based on an excellent book (at least I thought it was the cat's meow when I read it as a horse crazy teen).
Look! (edited because I had the wrong book in here): Super expensive!

Just watched Spirit, Stallion of the Cimmaron (sp?). In my entire life I have never heard such chatty equines!
My husband's comment as we suffered quietly through it, "Hey, look! The girl horse has girly eyebrows!"

Well, Reynard, The Year of the Horse was MUCH, MUCH better than The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit, too.
Spirit: Not only girly eyebrows, but laps water like a cat/dog. LOL

Lunchbox you did a great job. It's not your fault, the thing was supposed to be corny.
Frankly, I am taking a seminar this weekend on how to write romance novels. I plan to get wealthy as possible writing absolute crap, and earn so much ill gotten gains that I have no choice but to stay home and ride all the time.

No problem lunchbox! My horse and I would also be happy to star in any cheesy horse movies in the future! :D
Hey, I acted in college, I can ride dressage and jump, I can bring my own movie set good-lookin' horse or two if you decide to do a sequel! My grandma thinks I look like Julia Roberts. :lol::lol:

Awwww thanks Slc and Holly!
It does sometimes hurt when I read all the criticisms.....most people don't know how hard we try to make the best movie we can with what we have.
But hey I've been known to laugh and make fun of movies, too ;)
Good luck, Slc, make lots of dough writing romance novels, and be sure to write a horsey one!!!! Lots of fodder there!
