Hey all, I was just wondering what everybody thought about feeding canola oil vs corn oil to help put on weight? I'm currently using corn oil and have used it in the past to help my skinny TB. It's always worked well, but it's just so expensive! I was wondering if canola oil was better, worse, about the same? I know I can buy a restaurant-sized container of canola oil for much cheaper than the equivalent of corn oil, but is it worth it?
Thanks! :D

I'm such a geek but the other day I found corn-oil with added Omega-3's! I was psyched!!
My Mom was trying to tell me how bad soy oil was... pure soy is great, but the soy oil or something is bad, so...I think it was canola that she recommended. whichever one doesn't have soy. Don't know if it's any different for the horses though... And this is coming from my Mother, so... I believe but don't know that you all should ;)

If all you're looking for is calories, there is no difference. Whichever is cheaper and/or more palatable is your best bet.
Fat is pretty much fat when you're just looking to add weight. All the other stuff is superfluous, IMO. :)

I've always used corn oil. My vet recommends it, and my horses like it. I really don't think it would be a big deal if you switched to the Canola oil though.

The omega 3 vs 6 issue is often brought up in the corn oil vs canola oil debate, but really, we just don't know if that matters or not. If you're doing everything you can to reduce inflammation in your horse (dealing with some lameness or maitenance issues) you may want to use canola. If you don't have any issues, either is probably fine.

Texas A&M did some research on it and found that corn oil does cause some inflammation, so they don't recommend it if your horse has arthritis. That is why I switched to canola oil. I think that the article may be available at www.thehorse.com.

I use sunflower oil. They seem to like it, and it's fairly cheap. It usually works about about £1/litre.

Personally like flax seed oil but it's pricey. Canola oil was developed by a canadian (hence, CANola) especially for livestock. Go with the canola.l

My horse has been getting canola oil as an added source of fat/calories for a few years now. I chose canola over corn oil because it is cheaper (esp the store brand), seems very palatable to horses, is a decent source of vitamin E & it is higher in omega 3 than corn oil. In fact, I think the only other veggie oil higher in omega 3 is flaxseed oil, which is expensive.

You can try olive oil--not real high in Omega-3 per se, but the ratio is good (if you're into that) and it has other stuff in it that's beneficial, flavones and the like. Don't know how palatable it is to horses--I don't share mine with them, it's for humans only! :D Yumyumyum.

I like canola because it stays liquid / flowing at lower temps than does corn oil. Saves me having to carry it between house and barn in all but a major cold spell.

Have you looked into Cocosoya oil? http://www.cheshirehorse.com/Details.asp?ProdID=204&category=&gclid=CJyYlqLKhJkCFQa-sgodXiF1lg
Mine one Arab does NOT do well on any other kind of oil (skin issues basically) and my OTHER (normally very sane) Arab went pretty much crazy on Fish Oil.
I love the price of the Cocosoya, and both my boys do really well on it!

You can get cases of the large containers at Sam's that helps with the price.
