I'm looking for a nice pair of smooth leather 1/2 chaps. I have Ariat boots, and full chaps and suede 1/2 chaps, but would love a pair of leather 1/2 chaps to wear in those 'in between' times, lessons, clinics, etc.
Any great suggestions, thanks in advance!

I think there were some Ariat's on Tack of the Day today...maybe see if they have your size??

The ones on Tack of the Day today are suede on the inner calf.
I ride in the Ariat Cameo which is leather all around (small "stretch leather" panel for give) with an extra panel of leather on the inner calf. Dover's has them on sale for $90 right now.

The only problem with the Cameos is they fit lower on my paddock boot so I have to have men's spurs (or stretch out my ladies spurs) that fit on the outside of the half chap.

I have the Ariat Close Contact and have even shown in them. They look good and have held up fine. They are starting to wear a bit on the inside but that is after about a year of pretty decent abuse (I ride 2 most days).

My trainer has the Tredstep Extremes (the smooth leather version), which are LOFFLY but I find a tad expensive. I have the Grand Prix smooth leather ones, and I love them. They look almost like the TRedsteps, but they're about $70 at Cabin Branch in So. Pines. So far, they've held up well and they're easy to clean, and they look wonderful on: http://www.equusnow.com/prodview.asp?idProduct=1408 (they don't look as clunky as these in real life). ariat close contacts are amazingggg.
they're really similar in a tall boot in their looks and the way they break in since they tent to drop just a bit. they're practically custom once they break in. they mold to your leg.
i love mine. i rode in the suede for years, just converted around october.
i'll never go back =)

I have a pair of Ariat crown pro half chaps (full grain smooth leather all around). I wear them for clinics, lessons and even out hunting right now (until I get boots this summer). They look great and fit great!
My everyday 1/2 chaps are the Ariat classic II's ( same one's as on TOTD) and I really like them as well. They are sueded on the inner side but when your riding look to be all leather. I'm on my 2nd pair and really like them.

Now for sizing, do you stay close to the 'sizing' chart. If I get the ones on TOTD, there are no returns available. If I get the others, I can return them? Just curious, based on the chart I would wear a large. Thanks again.

I used the chart Dover provided when ordering my Ariat Classic II's and they fit great!

Thank you all, I just ordered the classics from TOTD. Almost ordered 2 pair, but figured I'd wait to see - sizing, etc, then get the more expensive ones. I always ride in full chaps, but it's just not the 'thing' for eventers? Anyway, I want to save my boots.
so, thanks again!

LOVE LOVE my trestep smooth leather half chaps...just gorgeous. I do not know what they cost in america but they were not too expensive in the UK.

though they are lovely, mine lasted all of 3 months. Dover took them back and replaced them with Ariat classic II's. I don't like the classics new design. The zipper ends at the bottom and gets in the way of my spur.

I like them but agree that if you are really abusive...i.e. riding in them all day every day....they will not last that long. I'm on my third pair...the first pair didn't last as long as the next two have.

I too have the Grand Prix "smooth" leather Chaps and they are incredible! They are extremely close contact, they are made very well - top quality workmanship, the leather is soft - just beautiful to look at plus they have a nice spanish cut top. The zippers are very easy to operate unlike some other chaps and they also have a very discreet stretch panel that gives them a custom fit!
