View Full Version : Frying Pan Park under construction!

For those of you that school at Frying Pan, be prepared as it is under major construction! When I pulled in there this evening to teach my dog agility class I could not believe my eyes! The old barns are nearly torn down. Many of the trees cut down, the little ring beside the outdoor is a parking area for heavy equipment! It is a mess up there! I have so many fond memories of those old barns! When my daughter was in 4-H we used to spend the night in those barns! The kids had a blast! Our horse has stayed in those barns during HTs. I was a little sad this evening to see so many changes taking place, but my understanding is that it will be beautiful once completed which I have been told could be after the August DRPC HT. Not sure how this will effect the May HT, but it might be that there are no barns for horses for that HT.

Yes, I was there tonight too (actually taking happyappy's agility class with my dog :)), and was shocked to see how FP had been "gutted"; it looked like some major deforestation (or in this case, "site preparation", I guess) had taken place...:sigh:

I wonder whether the first part of the T/P x-country course survived the demolition?!? (I'm thinking that the steps did not...)

The lower ring was cordoned off, as well as the ring by the indoor. What will they do for the jumper show in 2 weeks, and the River Bend CT a week from this Sunday?!? And what about the May HT??

I first went to FP (for PC activities) in 1967, and hate to see this happening; hopefully the end result will be worth it, and they won't ruin it for the eventing crowd...

Still, rather painful to see it.

Nothing to do now but sit and wait.

They were going to look into preserving them but we'll have to see for ourselves what happens.

What happened to the wood?

Did anyone get a souvenir?

I would imagine there is a great deal of it in the on-site dumpsters if it hasn't already been removed.

We were there yesterday schooling 3 horses. We were also there Sunday with 3 other horses. The progress in just a few days was HUGE! It was so loud (great for the babies, this is why we go to FPP, teaches the babies just to deal!) yesterday and it was a mess over there.

Both times we had the trailer full of horses. If anyone gets any wood and wants a souvenir let me know, I'll see what we can do. I was impressed how fast it was all moving along.

We'll be there for the jumper show with 3 babies in a few weeks, I can't wait to see how far along they've come.

So from what everyone's said it seems like schooling the XC course is still an option? I was planning on going 3/8

Is the Irish bank still sectioned off?

Ishi

The Irish bank is roped off.

A lot of the main field was torn up. We tried to stick to fences that had footing in front and after, as well as the water and ditch. The fences in the woods are still there, but the construction is right behind them. The half coffin and back there was great. There were cattle in the one field so we stayed out of there. Over all the footing was great, other then what had been chewed up in the main field by horses.

When you pull in, you now have to go right, and around the indoor on the other side. There wasn't a sign, but you can't drive the way you used to, there isn't really a road there anymore. It's massive what's being done, it looks like a bomb went off, or at least it did yesterday.

I can't wait to see it when it's all done!

Oh crap, guess I should proof read and not just spell check?! I promise, I didn't see any feces in the woods, just fences and some leaves. Rocks too

Oh, there's a new start box :D

I saw that typo too...

I was GOING to go for the easy joke, there, Ishi--but somehow "rose above it" :D

Apparently someone else beat me to it anyway...

BTW, the CT on March 8th *is* going on (per the organizer, I e-mailed her) and they will just have to work around the "devastation"; there will be no trailer, horses, or foot traffic allowed beyond the parking lot--which means that the overflow trailer parking will probably be on the x-country course. They no longer have the warmup ring on the end of the indoor (or even access at that end), so will be using the new ring at the other end to warm up; at least that's my assumption.

Just so you can ease your minds a little, we have been in regular contact with FPP management about all of this and there have been no surprises. Actually the news has been good. Because of the poor economy the bid was so low that they are going to have 2 barns rather than one and should finish bewfore schedule. We will be runnign the May and August HT and of course need the support of the equestrian community.

We had our course builder in last week moving jumps and working with our course designer Brian Ross on how to work around the construction. We are chaning the first part of the course to avoid the construction
'
1) We moved the start box to where the first jumps were and put the first jumps around where start box is.

2) You will then ride through upper ring through a gate and jump out of ring over coops that are being built ( obiously after dressage is finished using upper ring)

3) The portable arrowheads will be placed outside the ring for Prelim

4) the vegetable stand was moved to where the novice jump was that goes into woods and P & T will now take the old BN and N path through woods. BN & N will go around the vegetable stand. THen you will largely be on old track.

5) THe cedar gap jumps at far end of upper ring will be changed. THere are currently 4 sections ( 2 are BN and 2 are N). one section will be raised to be a skinny T; One section raised to be a skinny P; the other half will be a shared BN/N.

6) For the interim, we will be moving SJ to near where XC warmup has been in field. Wamup for XC and SJ will be in that field too.

7) For stabling we will be using temporary stalls that have been put in the 4H building, I think there will only be 30 stalls

With reduced parking and stabling, we will probably cut back entries to 150 from 240. As I indicsated above, we need the support of the eventing community as our work cost money. We are not asking for donations but hope you will compete there. We will make sure that the vent lives up to its usual standards

What you read above is true for May. What is unclear is whether they will finish in time for August HT. THey think they might.

I guess none of you saw that the barns were bing sold on Craig's list for 1 cent. Why so low? I think you had to take them down and remove them. I don't think anyone took them up on their offer.

( I could not stop laughing about the feces. I was really wondering what we needed to do. I was just about to call when someone cleared it up)

We did see that the barns were "up for sale" on Craigslist. That was the contractor's preferred way of removing the barn so he could turn a nice tidy profit on the side by getting paid twice for the removal.

Well, officially no reason why not, but since there will be a LOT of horses there competing (so LOTS of trailers!), I would suggest another day for schooling--perhaps that Sat. instead?

Yes, I was there tonight too (actually taking happyappy's agility class with my dog :)), and was shocked to see how FP had been "gutted";

I was there, too, on Thursday night! I'm in the basic class with my new dog. The spastic white pit/american bulldog mix who doesn't always have all four feet on the floor. :D Dr. D, I'll have to stop by and say "hello." I think Oliver was jealous last week as he spent a good portion of his time looking longingly over at the all the fun that was going on in the agility area. ;)

Thanks... my mother/groom/videographer/everything can't do Sat so we might just try to brave it or go later. I'll check out times and see if they'll be done early afternoon or something! I'll call just to make sure they wouldn't mind...
