I have a 4 yr old grey mare with a quarter sized sarcoid directly under her girth area. A year ago, our vet burned it away with a laser, but it`s back.

What recommendations do any of you have, please.

I had very good luck with Fluorouracil. It was originally created for human skin cancer treatment...

My mare's sarcoid was on her eyelid and while several vets wanted to cryo, I wasn't so keen. My new vet spoke w/ some folks at MSU and they had been trying this fluorouracil.

So we tried it. And it worked well. You treat for a week, take a week off. Treat for a week, take a week off.

If you talk to your vet about it and need more info, PM me and I can send you my vet's contact info and I'm sure she'd put you in touch w/ the folks at MSU that recommended it to us.

Mine was compounded at a Wedgewood pharmacy in aquaphor.

I've used xterra on my horse about 5 years ago for a sarcoid and it hasn't come back. The only thing is the you need to apply only a small amount on the sarcoid only. Try not to get it on healthy skin as it seems to eat away at that too.

I've also seen good luck with cisplatin injected directly into the sarcoid. Every 2 weeks for 3-4 treatments seems to work well.

I'll second the xterra. My mare had a really ugly one high on the inside of her hind leg and after about 6 weeks of treatment with xterra, it was completely gone.

Xxterra.

Had a nickle sized and a smaller size on my stallion's girth, just behind elbow. Cut it, grew back. Froze it, grew back.

Xxterra'd it... seven years later it's still gone.

He was off a far shorter time too than for the two surgeries.

It IS messy. I wasn't prepared for quite HOW messy. BUT--it did not bother the horse at all... he didn't fuss or itch it or anything.

How messy are we talking? Just curious as Gringo has numerous sarcoids...

When they slough off they can be a bloody, inflammed mess. And the horse will wind up hating your guts if they get inflammed.

I used this

WAY cheaper than Xterra, all sarcoids sloughed and haven't come back so far (it's been a year...knock on wood). And it's safe if it gets on healthy skin. Got rid of sarcoids ranging in 1/2" - 3" in diameter (that was the biggest he had).

I'm trying to fight a sarcoid, too. I just started using Xxterra after 3 years of all of the above. The vets that I use didn't want to use Xxterra due to the horrible stories that they have encountered with it. I am terrified now, but I have just finished the first 20 days and starting the second round with ok results. I looks gross. I have pictures if you'd like to see that I can e-mail you. My horse is sensitive to it, but I think he is mostly tired of having it messed with. I've tried cutting it off four times and freezing them and I've done cisplatin and flouride treatments as well as acupuncture and a few other things. It's official... my horse hates me... when I am not holding a carrot in my hand.

Xxterra. My gelding had 5 when I bought him (cheek, base of ear, large lumpy one at the corner of his eye, armpit and withers). All cleared up with Xxterra (even the eye one, but I was very careful!) and have not had a comeback in 5 years now. We just can't touch that one ear anymore. It was a nasty pus-y mess for a few weeks, but then it clears up, but the hair never grew back.

Used it on my mare's very small dime sized one on her forearm, and it not only cleared it up, the hair grew back in the same color.

My horse has several flat sarcoids. I am in the process of researching treatments. There is a treatment called Aldara (imiquimod) which has shown some success. University of Minnesota published their results. There is also an article written by Anthony Yu (Ontario Veterinary College) regarding updated diagnosis and treatments. Both provide helpful information. Good luck with your horse!

I second the fluorouracil

my vet prescribed "Efudex" brand from Roche (5% fluorouracil) for my gelding years ago

it made quite a mess as it was working but the sarcoid (which had been frozen off before and come back) was gone for good after this treatment

My horse had some big ones in her ears. Xterra is a red, thick goo which is extremely caustic, and it worked great for my horse. The skin and sarcoids sloughed off, and underneath was very raw red flesh, but after it healed( a month) they never came back. It has been 6 years now.

There's an article in this month's (Apr '09) Equus magazine about a vet who's treated a dozen horses successfully -- He freezes a small piece of the sarcoid, then implants it in the neck of the horse -- I believe it takes a few months for the sarcoid to completely disappear --

My experience was pretty messy: serum and ooze dripping down from the sarcoid location. Horse didn't like the itchy dripping. Horse repeatedly rubbed open sore against knees to combat itchy dripping. Horse has white legs. After a day or so of oozing and rubbing, horse looked like it had degloved both front legs. Pretty gross.

My experience was pretty gross too. It ended up taking two rounds and there is a scar about the size of a nickel but it has not recurred. I put it just on the location of the sarcoid for I think 4 days. The sarcoid fell off and there was just oozy flesh underneath. A few days later I noticed a bit of sarcoid still left on one side of the oozy hole so I applied another round of Xxterra on that little section. It fell off a few days later. I think when it was all said and done it was about a month or more of healing time.

My horse had about 8 of them on him. I had one of the larger ones biopsied and once the vet took the piece off of the large one all the rest seemed to disappear but the large one that he still has. I don't put anything on it. Should I? It doesn't bother me, but is it bothering him?

My horse had a flat sarcoid on this face 2 rounds of Xxterra didn't work. The vet injected it with a human cancer drug about 2 weeks apart and it is all gone. The hair didn't grow back all the way but it isn't that noticable. Regretfully I don't know which cancer drug he used.

The Xxterra was gross.

My friends horse had a sarcoid the size of a half dollar on his neck when she bought him. The vet told her that the best treatment was original crest toothpaste and betadine mixed together. This huge area on his neck that was often bleeding cleared up after a month and it has never come back (it has been 4 years).

My gelding had one start and I started him on it immediately. Within 2 weeks it was completely gone and has never returned.

I mixed up a small amount and kept it in a sealed container and applied it with a q-tip daily. I made it so it was slightly yellowish in color, more toothpaste than Betadine.

I will say this....I haven't used Crest since I saw what it can do and am using All natural stuff now!!
