I read most of the nutirtion threads but don't recall seeing this question discussed.

With all the talk over finding the perfect feed or diet balancer...

Why can't I just feed:
Coastal Hay
Alfalfa Hay
flax
rice bran
and a multi vitamin?

All mixed up with a lil bit'o pulp to get it down the hatch?

Before the advent of ration balancers, that is more or less what I did:

soaked beet pulp + soybean meal + mineral supplement + yeast culture

Re: your specific plan, you will want to make sure your horse is getting enough protein from the rest of his/her diet for whatever age, growth stage, and metabolic or work status they are in. Otherwise Rice Bran balances the Calcium in Beet Pulp pretty well as long as you don't over do it.

Why not? Nothing magic about feeding horses, although there does seem to be a lot that is fashionable and unfashionable. :) If what they're getting is meeting their needs, mission accomplished.

If you're testing your forage all you really need to do is supp for deficiencies. That's it.

That is pretty much what I do... Beet (plain), multivite and alfalfa pellets. My younger guy gets rice bran too. PLUS lots o' grass hay. They look great and have plenty of SANE energy!

That's what all of mine are on. Beet pulp and multi vit. Just switched everyone to that a few months ago and they look great so far. Can't wait to see how they work in the spring (that 'sane' factor:))

I only feed mine timothy/orchard hay, alf. pellets, bran and a few harder keepers get oats and beet pulp. I have a custom mineral supplement mixed that balances to our forage and feeds.

If they're tbs and working really hard (galloping fit for about 6 miles) you really have to make sure to keep the protein up too (IMO)

Would adding something like Tri Amino during the bulk of the season be over kill?

figure at his hardest per week:
Aqua Tred 1-2 times
(Every other week) 13-17 mile trail ride
3 dressage schools
1 easy hack
1 jumping school
1 trot session
1 day off a week

all on an easy keepin TB.

Well that is exactly what I do and have been for several years, hay, couple cups of wet beet pulp, minerals and any supplements that are needed.

Beet pulp, multi-vitamin, alfalfa pellets and added fat is working wonderfully for my EPSM horse. Plus pasture and grass hay of course.

She's doing 3rd level dressage 4-5 days a week and maintaining condition very well.

That's about what I do.

I mix alfalfa pellets and beet pulp pellets 50/50 and soak them. Serve that up with Nutraflax (2 oz) and a local vit/min supplement. Hard keepers and nursing mares get a pound or two of oats. EPSM mare gets oil. Grass hay galore. That's all folks.

I rotate around with beet pulp, alfalfa pellets, and some oats. that's what they get, in different amounts, and they get a vit/min supplement. I add Tri-Amino. That's it.

Some get some additional minerals (copper and zinc) as we are deficient (or rather, high iron, therefore need more cu)

Yep.

If you're getting enough protein from your hay and/or added alfalfa...

It can be all you need.

I feed beep n'oil, flax, vits/mins, alfalfa pellets & whole oats for those who need it (the stallion can't get alfalfa, for example, or pg mares, growing foals etc. )
