From the Tallahassee Democrat -

Second to last paragraph - Hugh Lochore named as the new course designer for Red Hills in 2010.

How unusual that this would be announced in a column that's more or less a police blotter. Has eventing sunk to new lows?

Good for Red Hills. It was a change that needed to happen and late is better than never.

JER - I agree - not posted on the USEA site.

Sort of like putting potentially contentious political news on a seldom read page in a newspaper - happens all the time in my local paper!

Maybe the Tallahassee community feels that Eventers are only a few steps shy of being psychotic homicidal sociopaths.

I was talking to another rider at Ocala II a few weeks back about Red Hills' demise this year. His comment: "I wonder if it's sunk in that changing the course builder wasn't enough. People [ie riders] are waiting for them to change the course designer."

I'm sure the economy factored into the low entries this year, but I nonetheless wonder whether entries will improve in 2010 because of this change in designers.

In 1999, after Simon Long was killed at Burghley, there were calls to replace CMP as course designer.

The fence at which Long was killed was a death trap, something that never should have been allowed on a cross-country course. The complex caused lots of problems that day.

But Burghley kept him on for another year, then replaced him with Wolfgang Feld.

The Telegraph had a good article (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1346098/Burghley-drops-%27stale%27-Mark-Phillips.html) about it. Money quote from CMP:

Capt Phillips said: "I've brought more publicity to Burghley than any course designer they've ever had. That's one of the spin-offs that an organiser gets from me - the attendant publicity that follows me around."

You know, many terrorist organizations that operate under the same philosphy.

well someone needs to clue mr. phillips that, we as a whole(eventers) do not want that kind of attention. glad to see he has been replaced. i just do not care for his courses, always really tricky, dangerous. hope red hills is on and full for next year.:)

Aw Reed - I just read the above quote from your posting and sprayed a mouthful of a pretty good Merlot all over my poor computer. You're funny!

And those organizations end up on the Watch List, don't they?

(Eventing and terrorism. Similarities abound.)

Can we put CMP on the Ego Watch List?

That would be like pouring lighter fluid on an out of control oil refinery fire.

Hugh aint too bad to look at either. He helped build the course at RH many years ago ( I last rode there in 03). A girl I lived with had the worlds largest crush on him and pretty much followed him around after Jim introduced us to him.

Good for RH. Now I just need to get a horse going back at Prelim and I would love to make the trip to FL, even if just for RH :D

I got it wrong. Needs a rewrite.

Should read: Course design and terrorism. Similarities abound.

Wow. I have the 1999 Burghley on dvd and decided to pop it in this evening. I had forgotten how treacherous that course was. One thing that came up over and over again was bad striding. It was like the horses were being set up to fail.

Yeah - now if I go back to Florida (and have a horse), I could go there. I love the people, the setting, etc, just not the course, so this is great news.
