I think they should induct all the horses!

I would suggest or hope that the USEA makes efforts to include information on the lineage of these superior equine athletes who are eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame.

If Bruce Davidson is actually eligible this time---ie, if he doesn`t get on another Team at age 70 or whatever---then he`s the one obvious "must."
I`d be very nervous, though, if I were him, that his long grey beard might get tangled in his spurs!!!!

Just curious, but what's with the ratio of humans to horses?
1999 - 6 to 2
2003 - 4 to 2
2006 - 3 to 2
and now...
2009 - 5 to 2
Arguably there are more great horses than great humans. Plus, there is no eventing without the horses. I guess it just bugs me, as it just seems like it always gets to be more and more about the people and less and less about the horses. Which is not what horsemanship is all about - or at least not what it used to be about.
I don't mean to be negative. There are some truly fabulous folks on the list! But I think it would be fitting to have at least as many horses inducted as people. Who's doing the heavy lifting here? Odd.

looks like there should be a section for horses and riders that survived the '78 world championships. that, or a section devoted to horses ridden by bruce davidson. there are three on here, and you can't discount dr. peaches or eagle lion - both seem to be no brainers.

Ben Arthur has a vote from me. Not only did this horse win a team gold and individual silver (and just barely INV gold by virtue of one rail) it needs to be mentioned the very short time span in which this horse did just that. Yes he competed at the WC in germany 1982 but when this horse was bought by Lilian for Karen and imported back to the USA he was a nut case!!!! I asked Karen "what the 'blank' did you buy and what the 'blank' were you thinking?" I would have never ever imagined what she accomplished with him in two years. This was an amazing effort on the part of both horse and rider and it was an effort worthy of recognizion for sure.

you are quite right denny. I am not saying that she did this alone by any means. I do not know what Mike did the day they took him off the trailer at stonleigh after he arrived in the USA but he came off with three (!!!) lead chains...one over, one under, and one through, just to lead him out to the woods behind the top arena. He came back soaked but better for it. I never did ask what "discussions" took place in that hour out there but he was certainly better for it....in so far as he could be lead in only TWO chanks from that point on. He was a nice horse and since they could not have The Grey Goose;) they certainly got the next best thing.

*grin* at the mental image
I am so thrilled to see Bruce nominated... but given that he has Jam back, what happens if they qualify for the 2010 WEGs?

Jo Whitehouse emailed me that the USEA would dearly love to recognize more horses in its 50th anniversary year, but that the trophys are extremely expensive, and the USEA is being very careful.
So anybody want to donate?

How much is a trophy? Unlike humans, horses don't really seem to mind small trophies (or just plaques). ;) I would guess the humans accepting this trinkets on their behalf wouldn't mind either - as long as these ponies go down in history as being in the Eventing Hall of Fame.
One word comes to mind - Priceless.
But I am guessing that we could raise a little money for the horses of our choice. I have always been a big Grey Goose fan myself. :D
Is there a target dollar figure?

I think that times as today, somebody that inspired would be the right choise.
The ultimate underdog that showed that heart moves mountains, for me that is The Pony.
He expressed what this sport is all about like nobody else.

I'm on the Eagle Lion nomination band wagon! But I'd be OK with Giltedge as well

Absolutely! The Pony will make it in eventually, no doubt. But that is exactly why I think more horses need to get in - even more than people. Less than one horse per year (the current rate) will leave out many deserving horses as people forget them after a couple years.

I'm in the Bold Minstrel camp. Not only was he on the 1964 US Olympic eventing team and a couple of Pan Am teams, but he was also on a medal winning Show Jumping team.
I have Dr. Birdsall's books from the early 80's. Those horses who are in his eventing section will have pedigrees. But there aren't many.
