Was there a bad fall at Training Level at Pine Top last week?
Several people have mentioned it to me this week, but I hadn't read anything. I don't know the rider who was allegedly injured, or the horse.

i saw on the pine top website that each training division had a rider fall, but not sure who it was, and if they and their horse are ok. i sure hope so.

From what I heard from people at the event, the rider was competing in the junior training division and she was badly hurt. Unfortunately I believe she is still hospitalized and in a coma. However, the horse was not injured. I'm sure others must know more about the accident and the rider's current condition.

I heard she was riding an ex advanced horse with lots of mileage. Apprently he stopped and she came off. I don't know if this is fact but it is what I heard through the grapevine.

well good lord, can't we just post the facts and know who we are talking about? There seems to be just one rider in that division with a TE. How is she, anybody know?

The rider in the Junior Training division who fell was Alexandra Barry, riding a horse called Devon.
She appears to be from Canada.
Her friends have posted a get-well video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCGxB5yZyVI) for her on YouTube. In the description, they ask people to 'please comment, sign your name'. Which means they're welcoming get-well messages for her, probably for her to read when she wakes up.
(I'm assuming it's the same Alexandra Barry, unless two horsey girls with the same name were injured recently, which seems unlikely.)
I don't know why these things take on such mantles of secrecy. This was a USEA event, open to the public, etc. The RF is recorded in the results. And it's in every rider's/trainer's/owner's interest to know about any accident in our sport. We can't learn or even analyze unless we have the information.
It's up to us to deal in facts and not rumors. Rumors can't easily thrive where facts already exist.
Heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery.

People still have a right to privacy - just because it was an open event, open to the public does not mean that details about her should or have to be made known to the general public. In terms of USEA documenting falls/injuries yes and to inform whatever committees yes, but to the general population who might be curious - no. In that regard it's really nothing more than rubbernecking. Not trying to create a huge debate meaning that one does not necessarily need to know the name, age, hometown etc of an injured rider (or horse) - that person and/or their family should be able to expect some level of privacy - if they wish to make it public let them on their terms.
I do agree, however, with the above statement about dealing in facts, not rumors.

I agree that people have the right to privacy, but I would respectfully say that that might extend to her family and her hospitalization, leaving that to her and them to let 'public' know about those details. The general details about what happened on the course, including the rider and horse's identities, I would feel should be available for safety discussions and concerns about the current issues in the sport.
What a sweet video. I will be thinking of her as she recovers. Hopefully she'll be back out on the course doing better than ever.

I hope she gets well soon. This is horrible :( I knew Peter when I used to board at Pine Top 5 years ago. He is such a nice man and used to always help me out with my horse. I hope his daughter gets well soon...I will keep her in my thoughts.

Her father has posted a short message on the YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCGxB5yZyVI):
Thank you for posting this Video. I showed it to Alex. She can not respond by speech or signs - yet - but her heart rate went up.
Keep sending good thoughts, she is slowly doing better,
step by step,
Peter Barry
This is great news!

I agree w/ both these comments as well - one should expect some right of privacy - although I will say when it comes to horses - the equine community is so wonderful with their outpouring of support and kind words. A rider or horse's identity does not need to be known necessarily and should a family demand an injury be kept quiet then the eventing (or any discipline) community should respect the family's wishes - I have never known this to be the case; however I don't think that anyone of us (meaning BB posters,) has a right to demand knowledge on who - Jane Doe on john doe horse fell sustaining <description of injury> is all the general population needs to know. By general population I mean someone like me (and no doubt many others posters). That does not take away any heartfelt condolences to the family and wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

For those of you on Facebook, there is a group dedicated to her, and updates are being posted.
Update de Tany (22/02/09)
Alexandra has been slowly coming off the drugs for the induced coma for the last 2 days. She had her best night last night. She has not woken up, but she has opened her eyes. She is almost breathing on her own and they are hoping to take her off the respirater very soon. All good signs
The link is http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=52017127191
For those that don't speak french, that little blurb at the top basically says that she was in a riding accident and is in the hospital, and here's a group for you to leave encouraging messages.

From the Facebook site yesterday:
Update from Dylan Barry(24/02/09):
She's still in a coma albeit what I think is a lighter one, they've also taken her off most of her meds which is good, and I think they plan on taking her off the vent tomorrow. While I was down there she would open her eyes for a while but they're not sure really how aware she was. They say we really won't know the damages until she wakes up. She is getting better though, the swelling in her brain started decreasing and she's more active with her hands all of which are good signs, at the moment i guess all we can do is wait.
