View Full Version : I dream of HALF PADS! - What do you wish your horse could wear?

It probably sounds silly.. but I have ALWAYS wanted to use a half pad. I think they are pretty and classy looking, and just love them.
Sadly, fate tells me this will never happen. My mare is a BIG WIDE stocky girl with an XW saddle, with absolutely NO extra room. A beautiful, big fluffy half pad would make her saddle too tight, and not fit. Woe is me, I am forced to go half pad-less. :(:lol:
So, anything you LOVE the look of, but your horse can't/won't/doesn't need to wear? Maybe you love western bridles dripping in silver yet you own an Oldenburg? Or you pine for a beautiful padded dressage double bridle but your barrel racing appy says it's not meant to be?

I absolutely LOVE the look of an upper level eventer...porter boots, a polo breastplate, billion dollar monoflap saddle:rolleyes:, matching pads/vest/helmet/you name it. Of course, all of this is completely unnecessary at beginner novice... But it just looks cool:lol:

Ooo, I love polo breastplates too! And I'm a trail/pleasure rider that hasn't jumped in nearly a year.:lol::lol:

but as an endurance rider never had a need for them. however, i'm thinking that now, while we're recovering from a suspensory injury and spending a lot of time in the arena, we could start using them and actually look legit doing so... hmmm....

I am RIGHT there with you! I keep catching myself picking out the nicest, most expensive XC and open front boots for my horse and then reminding myself that we have yet to see if he will even jump solid things in a field. Of course, the bigger issue is that all the boots I want don't come in a small or pony size. So sad.

Break out those polos when ya got the chance, girl!
dda; Eskadrons, and their knockoffs, Romas, come in pony size. Their the pretty white open fronts. I have a pair for my girl (the Romas, that is!). :)

Who cares if it's "necessary" or not? If it's not harmful to your horse and you enjoy it, then match away! Believe me, BN may be as high as I go, and you can bet your socks I'll be sporting "colors"!

I am also in the half-pad envy category... especially the custom Mattes in the different colours. For some reason I just really, really want one, but my wide QH is already in a fatty saddle and has no need for a half-pad. ):
And I want a shadbelly, even though I've barely started showing and don't see a hunter classic anywhere in my future... they just look so nice and classy.

In my dreams, I want one of the uber-expensive wool dress sheets, the custom kind that come in a gazillion color combos, is made of better quality wool than my own sweaters and can be embroidered with a fancy looking monogram or WB brand symbol. Just wearing one of these makes ANY horse look like they just got back from winning big at Devon.
This completely ignores the fact that my horse is a stocky QH that has never seen the inside of any show ring and that her $10 clearance fleece sheet works perfectly well as a cooler.

Oh my gosh, there are so many of those things! Things I just want. Just because they look awesome.
I really wish I could justify a closet full of neat riding clothes, including gorgeous custom boots.
Beautiful saddle pads- I will never in a million years be able to bring myself to spend $50 on a saddle pad, which is going to get sweaty and hairy. And yet...
Bridles, saddles, I could totally become an Imelda Marcos with tack instead of shoes. Just give me a small nation to loot, and I'm home free!

Nicely embroidered baby pad.....my guys are all OTTBs, and though I've heard rumblings of a logo for the breed (à la warmblood brand, etc), I don't think there is one...
Lovely fleece boots....
a NICE dressage bridle....
Sigh.

Oh, we definitely rock the "colors"...I buy everything I can in red or black... But the really hardcore cross country stuff, is really expensive, therefore I'd feel silly riding around in it. Sigh. One day.....

I covet a Thinline Comfort Pad, but *without* the cantle roll.
Instead, I use double sided carpet tape to keep the thinline inserts and shims on top of my Ebay from the UK sheepskin half-pads.
I have been searching for FIVE YEARS for a rolled chestnut/newmarket/london coloured weymouth bridle with buckle ends. Took the big plunge and got screwed on one--wrong buckles, wrong size, reins don't match... "custom" from UK non-returnable since middleman went out of biz. (after taking a YEAR to get...) :dead: If I'd spent the $$$ back five years ago, I could've gotten an OS. Now the OS is way out of sight... costs more than horse & saddle put together. :sigh: I keep seeing what I want in black, or even Bobby's has them in dark/havana brown, but Chestntut is what looks sooooo smashing on his flaxen forelocked self.
I do covet pretty pads, but my ponies are mostly blingy. I have ONE bay, who thanks to my knee isn't backed yet, just started lunging/ground driving last summer. SHE already has like four pads. :uhoh:

Hmmm. I would like my bay TB to wear nice white polos and a white saddle pad a padded dressage bridle and a CLEAN cooler. However, he is now a trail pony/pasture pet post broken back. So ... no.
And my Bulldog style chestnut Qh is just not gonna look so good bright orange, my favorite color.
So the BAY goes in electric orange and the chestnut in bright yellow! They don't have a say, when they work for a living, then they can dress more professionally, in the meantime, I get to play dress up on them while they play wild horses living outside in the mud,

Cute boots never fit my horses. I'd love some really snazzy open front boots, but my gelding has big ol' banana bowed tendons and my filly seems to be between sizes in everything. So polos it is...
I would also love a traditional Newmarket wool quarter sheet. I think they look so sharp. I just can't justify buying one when I live in the south, don't clip my horses, and rarely ride when it's below 40.
I also have "expensive tack I can't afford" envy... haha.

I dream of owning a nice pair of tall boots... or any pair of tall boots that fit. I outgrew mine... but really have no need for a pair whatsoever. I don't show anymore. :( I did get hubby to splurge on a custom pair of 1/2 chaps for Christmas last year. Alas, they are not the same as owning tall boots.
My horse pretty much has everything I want for her. Lucky girl. :)

OK - I would LOFF to dress either of my ponies up in a Western-style headstall - the ones with a little bit of silver, horsehair browband and little horsehair tassels...

How silly would that look with a dressage or A/P saddle?
Would it make it better if I used one of my Navaho pads with it?

I would love to switch out my horse's plain ole boring noseband for a Mexican Grackle!!! (figure eight w/ rings) I think these make any horse look absolutely stunning, but sadly my horse has no need for one and just gets pissed off if I add unnecessary equipment. I also lust after any and all leather open front boots with fleece lining!! Unfortunately my horse is a weird in-between size and all the expensive boots seem to be made for tall horses!!! GRRR

I think it's on here, somewhere... but there is someplace out there that caters specifically to the OTTBs. They have saddle pads and all sorts of other neat things like that. Hopefully someone else will chime in with the correct website for you to dream over .

I would love for my TB to wear all the fancy matching eventing gear that he can. Along with me too! An expensive monoflap saddle would be included.
I would want him to wear a figure eight with a cotton poof where it sits on the front of his face.
I do like half pads...but we can wear those anytime.
I also LOVE bell boots. He doesn't need them right now because he is barefoot. :( But he wears them when his fronts are shod and he does actually overreach so I guess I have a reason.
And I love fuzzy boots. But not the care that goes with them.

An expensive sheepskin girth, like a Hadfield's or Antares.
However, the reason I will not be getting one is not because I'm riding in the wrong discipline, but because I have already gone overboard on sheepskin-lined tack. Namely, my half-pad, my figure 8 bridle with sheepskin padding, and my Baines jumper boots with sheepskin lining. I DO think there is such a thing as *too much* sheepskin - it's when your horse actually starts to resemble a sheared sheep. *rolleyes*

I also LOVE the look of a sexy padded double bridle on a horse - and yet I have no desire whatsoever to do Dressage. I've ridden in my friend's Passier once or twice and I felt like a useless, floppy piece of luggage up there. I'm a "close contact" girl all the way... :D

I want a big, beautiful, comfy, padded western trail saddle for my big guy too.
I am the opposite. I want a nice Stubben Siegfried ap saddle, with matching bridle of course. However, my western boy is so long in the back. I put an english saddle on him once and marveled at what I could do with all the extra space. My mom suggested a table runner, but I don't know....

Not for the horse- but I really want to wear a top hat! I think it just looks so professional and classy. Nevermind that I do the hunters and if I even think about getting on a horse w/o a helmet my husband threatens to pull the plug on the whole thing.
Maybe one day...

Id love to have a blingy parade saddle & bridle with a beaut of a 17 hand paly ASB to go under it. Main and tail perfectly white on the paly, natch.
In keeping with the Fox and the Grapes story---
The white main/tail woud be the very devil to keep clean, and all that silver woud tarnish and need cleaned before each parade.
So I wont get one since I have a chestnut with a star. Sigh.

I would LOVE a whole collection of expensive, beautiful blankets, dress sheets, custom monogrammed cooler, the works. However, considering my horse is headed to the show ring, oh, never again, I can't justify any of it. He has a perfectly good, albeit basic and boring looking, navy cooler, and perfectly good turnout blankets. But I want a collection!
I've always loved the really nice leather open-front boots. Never owned a pair though.

I want a dress sheet! I saw one in black with burgundy trim and gold piping (monogram offered in gold)... would look gorgeous on my black mare. Almost bought it, but just couldn't justify it, I've got a perfectly good cooler... but that dress sheet! It was just so... pretty!
I just think monograms look so classy on saddle pads, and yet Dover's fee of $16.50 per pad... not so much. However, I did find out from a local embroidery/screenprinting/sports supply store that they can do my initials in any design for $5 per pad. I'm all set and quite excited to get all of mine done (in coordinating colors, of course- they have tons of thread colors). ;)
