I've never had to do this before but my buddy really could use the magic of some COTH jingles. Sunday Henn came in with a cut on his chin. Cleaned it/him up and tossed him back out. Tuesday night swollen, pussy, and sore. BO brought him in and cleaned it up. We found that we had missed a puncture wound and it went DEEEP. Kept him in much to his dismay. Vet looked at him yesterday. The puss pocket went all way to the bone and Vet pulled 3 bone splinters from his jaw. He's got a bad bone infection. Henn started on some serious antibiotics yesterday. He's eating and was thrilled to see me when I got there last night. Vet thinks he might need to go for a evaluation and possible surgery.

No more chips as of right now. I have a appointment with Vet to refresh my flushing skills this afternoon. Will look at X-Rays with her then.

Jingles aplenty. Just to make you feel a tiny bit better - my TB gelding, before I had him, had a bad tooth abscess that spread to his jawbone. Months of flushing and antibiotics ensued (including IV antibiotics at one point), and he was left with a permanent hole from his mouth through his lower jaw. He occasionally gets hay stuck in there, and I still flush it weekly with saline and keep an eye on it, but he's fine.

Thanks for all the jingles!
They must be working. Yesterday he had less puss. And the Vet thought he a little less swollen. :) We flushed with a giant bottle of saline. By the end he was being a trooper and I was sopping went. For the foreseeable future he will be getting flushed twice daily. Unfortunately no turn out and hes a real jerk for hand walking. We didn't even make it half way around the barn before he was trotting/pushing me around/rearing. I was so too tired to fight so after a lap I put him back in. Poor guy kept turning to stare off at his pasture and every once and while called out to his buddy. :(

what is it w/ vets who don't want the horses to be turned out?
i mean it's an injury on his jaw.:confused::confused:
but glad to hear he's feeling better.

If the issue is keeping it clean for turnout, you might get the vet to ok supervised turnout in a snow-covered paddock- or fashion a thick gauze pad with some sterile tape to cover it for 20 minutes.

Adding some more jingles for Henn.
I feel your pain on the hand walking, and be careful. A few years ago I had to hand walk my filly after a knee surgery and it was like walking a tiger on a rope after a few days (she was racing fit at the time).
The last day of hand walking I got brave and took her out into our field to graze and walk, apparently that was the WRONG thing to do, the mares got running two fields over and my little sweety blasted by, double barrelled me in the stomach, and kept on a goin'. I was fine after I could breathe again and she was OK to, I had at least shut the gate leading to the field thank goodness!
Hope your guy gets better soon!

certifiedgirl- I'm glad you're both ok!
We have much experience with hand walking (Henn and I) hes just a real jerk about it. The no turn out is a) for keeping the wound as clean as possbile and b) for monitoring him. We need to keep a close eye on him, make sure hes eating drinking and pooping normally. Its a big farm, we do have 2 small paddocks for individual turn out. One of which he hates (we know this from last time around) because he can't see anybody and its boring down there. :( The other is a long walk from the barn, and I'm not sure its a realistic option right now. But I will bring up the idea with BO and Vet when I get there later. I'm so blessed my Vet is on site. She also likes Henn though I can't say he currently feels the same way.

Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.
Glad to hear it's only a few splinters. Lost my girl last spring to a completely demolished jaw. At 20, it didn't seem fair to put her through plating/wiring/rehab for "it may work if she doesn't mess it all up". Miss her every day.
Safe handwalking too. A friend described walked her mare last week as "having a balloon on a string". Made me laugh!

More jingles and energy to you too! Your spirits seems good and I know that goes a long way for you and Henn. Glad to hear that all seems to be moving in the best direction and good luck with the handwalking (ugh)!

Thanks everybody.
I'm trying real hard to keep my spirits up. We both need to fight hard to beat this. Being down in the dumps won't help. I'll head out there armed with our old friend mr dressage whip and my hemlet, prepared for any and all antics about walking. If hes real good we will walk the half mile to say hi to his budy, who may or may not have kicked him. My gut says C. didn't do it! Henn rules the roost with iron hooves. C. knows what Henn says goes. We think the real culprit is his hay rack
