View Full Version : What actors look to be pretty good riders?

I know there have been various threads about actors/celebrities who ride or own horses, but I'm curious who everyone thinks is a good rider based just on what you see onscreen. Obviously, it's easier with older actors because of all the westerns. I was watching an episode of Bonanza yesterday (ah, the joys of unemployment) where Charles Bronson was a guest star. I thought he looked good on a horse, which reminded me I was thinking the same thing while watching The Magnificent Seven last month.

Tom Selleck.
I was boarding near Annapolis, MD and one weekday I was skipping work (benefit of working for the gov't) and there was a new guy at the barn. It was Tom Selleck. He was in town filming a Magnum PI episode at the Naval Academy and needed to polish up his riding (a local director kept his horse at the barn and lent it to him to ride). I asked if he'd like to trail ride and off we went. "Do you jump?"...he laughed and said, "Only when they don't know I do" and we were off doing small x-country stuff. He can ride and was a very nice guy. I took a photo to prove to the girls at the barn he was there.
That weekend I told my barnmates of his visit. "No Way!" was the usual response. I showed em' the photo...and then I got, "Damn, why didn't you give me a call!" I was impressed, he was friendly, was very careful with the horse and groomed him after he rode...and the guy could really ride.

Mortenson rides seriously as a hobby. and if I remember right, he brought his Lord of the Rings horse home from New Zealand.
Shatner is a very serious horseman in saddlebreds, he basically created their whole Western pleasure division.
Another actor who rides is Robert Duvall, he is wonderful to watch in Lonesome Dove as is Tommy Lee Jones.
One actor I HATE to watch is Kevin Costner. He has a good seat but he is always hauling some poor horse's head around with the reins until it gags: check out the Untouchables and Silverado.
And Brian Dennehy - a very large Brian Dennehy - in Silverado climbing onto some poor horse is both horrifying and hilarious - the horse looks at him like, "you must be kidding!"

I've been a fan of his "Quigley Down Under" and his Louis L'Amour movies. I THOUGHT that he looked comfortable in the saddle. Those movies suit him well.

I know personally that Robert Duvall DOES ride over fences. Tom Cruise bought him a jumper the year Days Of Thunder came out....and he already had some nice horses in training at his then farm in VA. He's no Rodney Jenkins, but he's more than ample.
In the movie "Lonesome Dove" there's a scene where Duvall is riding in the desert being stalked by Indians, riding a horse....it's quiet, all of a sudden there are shots fired at him, and the horse lifts OFF the ground in a bucking fit. Duvall rides him really well through it, and off they gallop...
He told us that the scene was NOT supposed to include that horse going off, he just reacted badly to the shots. They left the scene in because Duvall rode through it so well, and it was interesting....

I thought Tobey McGuire wasn't too bad in Seabiscuit. Usually I just cover my face and shake my head when there's a horse scene in a movie.
Henry Thomas, who played Elliot in E.T., lives on a ranch in TX in real life and has ridden a long time. He played Matt Damon's buddy in All The Pretty Horses. There's a scene where he gets his stolen horse back, and he kisses it on the nose. So cute! Loved him before, loved him after that for sure.

Can't speak for Tom Selleck's riding ability, but he did impress me as being a very nice guy as well. I worked at an ice cream store on Martha's Vineyard in the summers when I was a kid and sold him a cone. We chatted about college basketball (I was wearing a University of Illinois T-shirt, and they were quite good the season before) and he tipped me more than the cost of the ice cream. Very down to earth. Looked pretty good in a pair of shorts too...

John Wayne hated riding; hated horses. I always thought he looked stiff as a board on horseback. Robert Redford rides...Stephanie Powers played polo, as did/does Tommy Lee Jones. Sly Stallone used to play too; I always wondered how he rode. Portia DiRossi (Ellen DeGeneres' wife) rides--I understand she'sshown at Thermal??
There's a book called "People We Know & the Horses They Love" which is all about famous actors & their horses.
Saw Whoopi Goldberg's farm on "The View" yesterday...she said she rode when her contract let her.

I was actually impressed with Arnold Schwartzenegger's riding in "True Lies"--where he commandeers the police horse and rides it through the streets of Washington D.C., including through a hotel (and up an elevator :))
He looked like a natural (though there was clearly a stunt rider in a few scenes), leading me to believe that he must have done some riding earlier in his life (in Austria...)

Richard Gere has a farm in Westchester county, NY. I worked at the clinic he used, we patched up his appy that stepped on a nail. Never met the man, but he looked like a fairly good rider in First Knight.
Heath Ledger also looked like he could ride in a Knight's Tale.
I second (or third) Viggo, EXCELLENT rider, not only bought his horse Urais from LOTR, but bought the stallion that played Asfolath (Liv Tyler's characters horse) and gave it to the stunt rider who rode him. Orlando Bloom also got pretty good on a horse because of the movie. He was dating Kate Bosworth who is a very accomplished rider/horseperson.

They both started out as stuntmen, didn't they? Doing riding stunts? IIRC, Wilfred Brimley is another ex-stuntman/rider. (Yep, looked it up on wikipedia -- both Johnson and Brimley were cowboys turned stuntmen turned actors.)
Absolutely agree on Robert Duvall --he can sit a horse.
Tom Selleck came and sat in the seats right in front of us at the World Cup finals in Vegas a few years ago. He and his friends watched politely and seemed truly interested.
Kate Capshaw (Mrs. Steven Spielberg and the star of the second Indiana Jones movie) also rides seriously.

That is so cool, I love Tom Selleck. Also he did some nice riding in the movie Quincy from Australia, anyone see it. It was a box office bomb but I've seen worse movies.
Recently Mira Sorvino was in The Last Templar and if that was her long legs on that horse she was an awesome rider. Perhaps she used a stand in. But her sister does ride for sure, Amanda Sorvino also has a horse rescue in PA. Her Dad Paul Sorvino has been very supportive. This is truly a horsey family. I think Amanda drug her Dad into it, but he's hooked now, not riding perhaps but supportive and involved. He's a real animal lover.

"Something to Talk About" with Dennis Quaid as well. Duvall was riding a jumper in that movie. He (Duvall) also rides in Lonesome Dove and Open Range.
Side note about "Something to Talk About" is that one of the scenes show them driving down a Live Oak-lined "driveway" to the farm. Part of that scene is the Live Oak-lined driveway to Wormsloe Plantation in Savannah, Georgia (also the same drive seen in "The Generals Daughter.")

Bill C. and George the First certainly didn't. And the Shrub openly admitted to hating them. I wonder how Mr. Obama feels about horses?
Tommy Lee Jones I think is the best rider acting today. After him, I guess I'd say Robert Duvall and then Viggo.
The worst? John Wayne, absolutely. I can't even watch his movies, the way he crashes down on the poor beast's back and yanks its head around with the reins.

If I remember right Matthew McConaughey is a pretty decent rider. In "The Wedding Planner" with Jennifer Lopez he rode, and in an interview he talked about how out of his element he was in the dancing scene, which Jennifer was amazing in, but how tables were turned in the horseback riding scene. I'm pretty sure they used a stuntman for most of the riding, but he did say he had experience riding.

In a rerun of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" Larry visits Arizona. In a quick shot from a montage sequence, he's riding toward the camera and comes to a decent kind-of sliding stop. He even appears to keep centered as the horse fidgets to one side. Not too bad, Larry!

I'm thinking of the movie Conspiracy Theory with Julia Roberts and Mel Gibson, who also seems to be a good rider, he looks very athletic. At the end of the movie he rode by watching her ride cross country.
The part where she really cantered and jumped a decent sized jump was a riding double- a trainer who worked at Lionshare at that time. That's where those scenes were filmed.
I thought Tim McGraw looked pretty comfortable on a horse a few years ago in Flicka.

Colin Firth looked pretty decent in Pride and Prejudice (BBC version - though he said in an interview, he didn't think he did), but I was sure that as soon as Crispin Bonham-Carter (played Mr. Bingley) rode out of one scene, he must have toppled off - looked very out of place on a horse.

Ronald Reagan was an ok rider:
I have a prettier picture but can't find it...
There is a great book about Reagan and his horses written by an ex Secret Service agent. This agent was assigned to guard President Reagan because he (the agent) was an accomplished rider and was one of the few who could keep up with him. It gives a really good insight into Reagan's love of his horses. (can't remember the name of the book). ;)

I understand Jeremy Irons hunts - so I would assume he probably knows what he's doing on a horse.
Going back a looooong way, there was once an article in TV Guide about all the "TV Cowboys" and the horse wranglers gave their opinion on their abilities. At that time, they
felt the best riders were Dale Robertson (a QH breeder and a real rider) and Glenn Ford were the best riders.
They said James Garner was pretty good, "but he learned English and he posts."
They said James Arness wasn't bad, but his enormous size made it difficult for him to be a really good rider.
They liked Dennis Weaver and felt he was a good rider.
Didn't Linda Blair (Exorcist) show hunters/jumpers.
Julie Kavner rode/rides dressage.
Yeah, Viggo seems to buy every horse he rides in a movie, plus others. He bought the stunt rider that doubled Liv Tyler the Andalusian that she rode in LOTR and just gave it to her. Nice guy!

Body double. For the close-ups, they put McGuire on a mechanical horse to make it look like he was riding while they took shots of his face.
I meant the shots where you can actually tell it's him. On a live horse. There aren't that many scenes where it's really him, and they're mostly just trotting or a little cantering, but he wasn't embarassing. I did think the use of the equisizer (or whatever they call it) was pretty lame  so obvious they're sitting on a plastic horse covered in carpet.
He wasn't amazing, but at least he could post with his knees up his nose (not sure I could) and he didn't have the chicken wing elbow flap.
Edit: And also in Legends of the Fall, Henry Thomas (who I posted about earlier) played the youngest brother who gets killed at the beginning of the movie. Don't remember if he had any riding scenes in that one.

Body double. For the close-ups, they put McGuire on a mechanical horse to make it look like he was riding while they took shots of his face.
Most of the jockeys had to be put on mechanical horses for dialogue/close-up shots because of filming technicalities. You can read about the use of the Equicizer here (http://www.equicizer.com/images/equicizer.com/default1.aspx?contentName=News&news=1&newsId=65).
Gary Stevens on Maguire's riding-The veteran jockey gives Maguire top marks for his riding and disputes media reports that the actor rode only a mechanical horse in the film to earn his reported $12 million salary. "Tobey worked a horse here at three-eighths of a mile in 34 seconds -- 34 seconds! We gave each other a lot of confidence in what we were doing," he says.
Maguire did ride in the "Til he stops" scene, which is my favorite part of the movie :D

The Lone Ranger (on TV) that I recall was played by Clayton Moore (and Jay Silverheels was Tonto).
Ditto on John Wayne--apparently he had an accident early on and "hated" riding and horses ever after. (I still wince (and mutter) when I see horses getting jerked around in the mouth.)
Robert Mitchum was another one of the good old cowboys of the screen. He also owned a farm on the Eastern Shore of MD where he raised Quarter Horses.

I think Nicollette Sheridan (sp?) rides hunters or did when she was younger. I saw an over fences picture of her in a magazine (or maybe on ET, dont remember) and she looked pretty good. Nice solid leg and decent crest release.

Ditto on John Wayne--apparently he had an accident early on and "hated" riding and horses ever after. (I still wince (and mutter) when I see horses getting jerked around in the mouth.)
I loved all of Clint Eastwood's movie horses, especially that dapple grey that he rode in a few flicks (maybe the spaghetti westerns?).
Yeah, they had to have several horses that looked alike (usually blaze-faced chestnuts) for Wayne, because each one would gradually get difficult to handle because of his roughness with them.
According to "Hollywood Hoofbeats" that's a couple of different greys for Eastwood, not the same horse in each movie.

I thought Tobey McGuire wasn't too bad in Seabiscuit.
Sorry to rain on your parade, but Tobey did not do very much of his own riding in Seabiscuit. That is jockey Ricky Frazier doing all the work-- Tobey rode the mechanical horse for all his close-ups.
I worked on the movie Dreamer (which was wrangled by the same man Rusty Hendrickson) as Seabiscuit and we used the same method there. All race riding was done by professional jockeys with a mechanical horse used for any and all close-ups of Freddy Rodriguez. Incidentally, the guy who was Freddy's stunt double was seriously injured one morning while exercising a racehorse at The Thoroughbred Center where he worked before and after the movie and is now in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Also, Dakota Fanning rides as does Luis Guzman (Balon) he has Arabians, Kurt Russell (who was really nice to me on the set) also has horses, in fact he bought Dakota a Palomino after the movie and she named it Goldie.

OH yeah! Legends of the Fall. Good call. I liked that movie.
I'm thinking of the movie Conspiracy Theory with Julia Roberts and Mel Gibson, who also seems to be a good rider, he looks very athletic. At the end of the movie he rode by watching her ride cross country.
I haven't seen Conspiracy Theory, but I remember thinking that Mel's riding in Braveheart and The Patriot left a lot to be desired. Maybe I was being too hard on him, though.

He spends a lot of time in a western saddle on a paint horse in Dead Man - but don't rent it for that night when you have the house all to yourself.;)

My vote is for Viggo - my dad has met him - Dad had a role in the filming of Appaloosa and at the end of it all, Mr. Mortensen shared chocolates with everyone. My father says he is a very nice man. Helen Miren came by during filming, also purported to be nice (though I don't know if she has anything to do with horses...) I wish I had been able to go with my dad for the filming of Appaloosa; I didn't find out Viggo was in it until after it was all over - I'd have loved to have gotten to meet him. I would have, of course, talked his ears off about horses...
Dad also had the same role in the filming of 3:10 to Yuma - it was nasty cold and they had to spread dirt over the snow to keep continuity in the filming, so that there wasn't snow in some scenes and not in others filmed at other times. The stars were wisked from shooting scenes, into SUVs, and back to their trailers because it was so cold, so he didn't get to meet anyone much in that one. Of course Mr. Crowe and Mr. Bale are not reputed to be particularly nice, either.... so maybe he didn't miss out on anything.

Gwenneth Paltrow in _Hush_ has a terrible seat/legs (check out the scene where she's talking to the guy who is killing the turkey). I always laugh at the scene when Paltrow comes in the house, having apparently been out riding by herself (no self-respecting farm-owner would let her go ride by herself!), and at the scene when Jessica Lange is prancing around inside her million dollar house in her riding boots.

Speaking of Young Riders series, there was one episode where they had a horse ridden by two people in a chase sequence! The guest actress and one of the Young Riders, it was a chestnut with a flaxen mare so very distinquishable if you are a horsie person.
The guest actress hopped on to make a getaway and then one of the boys jumped on the chestnut to chase her!
I figured she was the most trustworthy horse so they must have been the worst riders.
If you want to howl with laughter, find a copy of "Tiny Town," a western they shot with the actors who played the Munchkins in Wizard of Oz. It's all ponies!

Russell Crowe in Gladiator - riding bareback on one of the Centurion's horses in the stadium. He's got a huge ranch in Austraila.
The first movie I ever saw Russlle Crowe in was "The Silver Stallion" and he spent 80% of his screen time on horses or working horses. I was in LOOOOOVE!
Pretty much all the Sarmatian Knights in King Arthur lookd pretty darn good in the saddle. In an interview Clive Owen said he had no idea why he took the role once he realized how much time he was going to be spending on a horse :)
Viggo is amazing. He not only bought the main 'Hidalgo' horse and HIS mount from the LoTR series, but bought the horse who played Shadowfax for the trainer, who loved him but had no hopes of affording what the studio wanted for him.
I think we all need to make movies with him and be in love with a horse :) Granted their bond was uber special.

I still assert that he looked very competent in the saddle, but now thinking a bit more about it, maybe he'd had a few drinks before riding?

It is hard to know about the riding abilities of some of the actors that have only been seen riding on screen. There is so much that can be done to make them look good for a film! Also find myself thinking about the difference between being able to sit halfway decently and being able to ride (or being a horseman!)
Also interesting how this mostly female board is especially interested in the male actors. Me too!
I do hate when the actors rip on the horses' mouths to make their dramatic points. And I chuckle at some of the westerns when a group come jogging into town and most of the actors are bouncing and doing their best not to grimace. Bet they wish they could have used the little WP "jog" - but then the movie would be too long!

William Devane (Yanks and Knots Landing) acted to pay for his Polo habit. Michael Keaton: cutting, Bernie Taupin (of Elton John/Taupin tunes)...cutting as well. Brooks and Dunn are big in the mega money end of the cutting world.
William Devane also has (or had) a card to judge in the Arabian division. I saw him judging at a show in Katy, TX once.

I agree about poor Pickett's horse in Getttysburg...you could tell that most of those guys could not ride including the re-enactors which surprised me. Tom Beringer looked like he might know how to ride. There was a magical scene during that movie during Pickett's charge when Chamberlain looks up from where he is lying on the ground and sees General Hancock through a smokey mist who is riding a beautiful big dark horse he has refused to dismount from. The horse is sort of slowly prancing and it is really lovely as well as mesmorizing to watch.

Long ago, when I was young and prone to doing this sort of thing, I devised a "Scale of Hot" with a friend. Sarmatian knights were the very top. The pinnacle of hotness.
Also, the world is better for having Viggo Mortensen in it.

Really? I'm always amazed at the number of horse people who admire John Wayne.
Do you honest to God want to ride like that?

Tom Burlinson in "The Man from Snowy River" was not a good rider before the movie, per this interview:
http://www.lovicks.com.au/about/man-from-snowy-river/
This jives with an article I had for a long time that said the man didn't ride much before doing the movie, but he was such a natural athlete that he picked it up with ease.
Rent "The Shadow Riders," and you can see Ben Johnson, Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck, and more, all riding in their inimitable style.
Ben Johnson roped competitively on Steel, the blaze-faced chestnut you saw him riding in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and so many other movies. He tried but was unable to buy the valued horse.
John Huston was a master of an Irish foxhunt, and rode very well. Actor, Director, Oscar Winner.
In the book, "Silent Hoofbeats," William Boyd, who played Hopalong Cassidy, is described as one of those who was very uncomfortable with horses. He only trusted one horse, Topper, and his scenes were carefully crafted to mask his lack of general skills. He did ride in the Rose Parade for many years until Topper died, and never made another mounted appearance after that.
Roy Rogers was a very good rider, and Trigger was a family horse as well as a movie star. In one of my books, not sure if it is "Silent Hoofbeats" or one of the Rogers biographies, one of the Rogers' daughters recalled riding him bareback all over the place and feeding him mayonnaise sandwiches.
I don't think I've seen anyone mention Robert Redford in this thread - I think he does a good job, and even made his own rope catch in "The Horse Whisperer," though it was one of those "beginner's luck" things. His late compadre Paul Newman was also comfortable ahorseback, and one of the Newman children, Clea, rode competitively.
"The Hollywood Posse" is another fantastic book about growing up in the Hollywood environs and working in the biz. The author's father was a stunt man who had some hair-raising tales about scoundrel directors (Cecil B. DeMille, please take a bow) who would arrange the action so that the gags occurred as true accidents, just to avoid paying the riders for their falls. There is a fantastic tale of the performers attempting to take revenge by running him over, courtesy of a cold-jawed studio horse, but DeMille missed being pounded underfoot. I can't wait for this book to come out on kindle!

Michael Landon looked good on his pinto. He, too had never ridden before Bonanza but overall gifted in the athletic department...

One of these guys - Carson Kressley - is an avid Saddleseat rider/competitor. I saw a special where he was talking about mane and tail care for his horses...the longer the better! ;)

Not sure about all the riding but they did give her the horse.
I read somewhere that Elizabeth Taylor did all her own riding for National Velvet, and that they gave her the horse that played The Pie when filming was completed.

Somewhere I heard that she hurt her back falling of the horse during filming...(didn't Monty double her?)

Monte Roberts made the dubious claim of being her stunt double for that movie (as a child), but it's not confirmed in any film histories or by other actors.

There was a picture of young Liz with her new horse in "Life Magazine" at the time. While she might have loved doing her own stunts, no studio would have risked her valuable neck so casually. It's always been fashionable for publicists to claim that their clients did all their own work.
By the way, "The Hollywood Posse" can be read online on www.amazon.com (use the look inside this book feature), giving you a view of selected parts and search results. Search De Mille (with a space) for some fun stuff.

That pinto was One Nasty Horse. Got to see them in their stalls at the Houston Livestock Show way back when and he was just a perpetual state of grumpiness. One kid did get bit (I was told at the time finger bitten off, but no way of knowing for sure as there was no press coverage or anything). There were 'do not approach or try to pet' signs plastered all over the stall door.

I heard they lost one to 'vandalism' :(
Well, he wasn't supposed to be a pony ride, he was a TV star! ;)

I read a John Wayne biography and it said he hated horses and only saw them as transportation.

I'm thinking of the movie Conspiracy Theory with Julia Roberts and Mel Gibson, who also seems to be a good rider, he looks very athletic. At the end of the movie he rode by watching her ride cross country.
Not sure about Julia, as that scene in Conspiracy Theory was filmed at Lionshare in Greenwich, CT and I believe Francesca Mazella was the stunt double.

Tom Berenger did alot of riding in Last of the Dogmen. Luke Perry played Lane Frost and learned to ride bulls for 8 Seconds. I didn't care for Robert Duvall's riding in Something to Talk About

Robert Redford - he looks pretty good on (and off) a horse....is my age is showing?
Martha Stewart!!!! You are kidding. I can't see her as a horsewoman, but I bet she can clean a stable particularly well...and even teach it!
The clip from the Man from Snowly River is an all time fave. Even better in a movie house. Along with the Chariot Race in Ben Hur, and the hunt scent from Tom Jones.
