Should they be pewter, stainless-steel, or something else entirely?

Mine is pewter. My opinion? As long as it holds my drink *hiccup* I don't care what it is.....!! :):)

Do you empty it out after a hunt or just leave the booze in it until the next one?

They say you should not put liquers or anything containing fruit juice in the stainless ones.
So if you want to be able to have more variety to your libations I would recommend a pewter one. I would not recommend a glass one if you are a lady and should carry it in your pocket. If you were to come to grief it might not end well.

It's bad luck to come home with an empty flask.

ETA - OH geez. Did I write that? It's bad luck to come home with anything left IN the flask! Sorry for the confusion!

Stainless steel will flavor the contents if you leave it in for quite awhile. I try to either finish/share my contents or return them to the bottle at home after each hunt.

Mine are all old and all glass. But they do go in the sandwich case. I don't carry any on my person, maybe I should. If I happened to fall and Maurice ran off, I'd be without a drink.

I ordered one last week online called The Paris Flask. It's plexiglass with stainless steel accents on top and bottom and a cap with a leash. And you can get initials or whatever engraved on the plexiglass part. Plus no issues with what's in it with plexiglass haha.
i fell off once and had my steel flask in my coat pocket. It was a really bad fall, and my flask ended up bent like a fortune cookie. I was badly hurt, and had a bruised abdomen in addition to thanks to the flask.
So I liked this one and I thought it might be better in case I fell on it.
I think I got it at guntergifts or something like that.
I also found a flask while searching where you could send in a photo to have put on it. THey looked kind of nice from the photos.

The "cap with a leash" is the most important thing!!!

Feb. 17, 2009, 12:22 PM
That's what I was thinking. I want something that holds the cap to the flask.

Unless I pick up something at our season-end silent auction, I'll probably buy something from this site:

www.pewter.co.uk (www.pewter.co.uk/acatalog/Pewter_Hip_Flasks__Pewter_14.html)

They seem to have reasonable prices.

And I like the "captive tops"......"often easier to handle for elderly people"......:uhoh::uhoh::uhoh::uhoh::p:p:p

I once had a beautiful flask--I believe it was stainless, but it might have been pewter. It had a hunting scene on one side, and a racing scene on the other. The detail is AMAZING! When I was in middle school the cool thing to do was carry a flask with a "mocktail"... I put ginger ale in mine and it exploded on a lark. I kept the flask (now horribly dented and no longer holds liquid) in hopes of one day finding a replacement.

There are some beautiful flasks on these links... none are quite like my now dented and deformed one, but I think I might need to make a flask order none-the-less.

Thanks for the links!

Should they pewter, stainless-steel, or something else entirely?

If you are male, it "should" be a conical crystal flask with a silver bayonet cap.

Like this: http://www.cinoa.org/art-and-antiques/detail/52911

But, anybody who cares what you carry in your pocket can easily be dealt with by smacking your lips and putting it back in your pocket empty.

I think I win this one: our local dollar store has VERY nice ss flasks - the slightly rounded square ones, if that makes sense; screw-top lid with hinge so you won't lose it. A whopping $4.

Whoever liked the ones with the engravings - keep an eye on Ebay UK - often see them there.

Rom - are those the plastic kind? Because I am really looking for one - freeze 1/2 to melt as I ride. Cool water - refreshing.

Moi? If it's me you're asking, then, no, they're stainless steel, no doubt made in China.

Same shape/look as this one (I just searched Ebay):

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-8-oz-STAINLESS-STEEL-HIP-FLASK-W-SCREW-CAP-FUNNEL_W0QQitemZ310099962051QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_ DefaultDomain_0?hash=item310099962051&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Without those little cups. Which look adorable. Lawdie, do I ever need to get a life!

Anyway, I also googled the Paris flask as mentioned by Jaegermonster - they look rather nice!

But if you need me to go trawling the aisles of the neighbourhood $ store, just pm me, and I'll be happy to oblige.

It came yesterday and is very nice. Had it's maiden voyage this morning and was a big hit. Our JtMFH/Huntman even ooohed and ahhed and thought it would be a nice hunt auction item with the logo on it.
The flask actually looks much nicer in person than it did on the site.

The stainless hip flasks with the hinged caps are certainly convenient. I have two, a handsome one (http://jmatt.net/blogpix/flask.jpg) given to me years ago by my brother, and a more rebellious one (http://jmatt.net/blogpix/rebelflask.jpg) that was a gift from another foxhunter.

The problem with the hip flasks is their small capacity. They only hold 6 ounces. There is another item popular in this territory where people are serious about hydration. I'm not sure Wadsworth would approve, but it seems to be acceptable at local hunts. It's a generic 16-ounce plastic flask in a leather case that clips to the D-rings. Unfortunately, mine suffered a minor injury (http://jmatt.net/blogpix/brokeflask.jpg) last time I hunted, so that flask, filled with the locally popular rocknrye, will probably ride in my coat pocket the rest of the season, along with the hip flask of Bourbon that is a permanent pocket passenger. It's important to be able to cater to a range of tastes.

One problem with the plastic flasks is that the cap is not tethered. This does require some additional dexterity. And occasionally there is a problem (http://jmatt.net/blog/article.php/blasphemy). Fortunately, I found a company that sells the caps in bulk quantities. So if a cap is lost, we just have to immediately consume any remaining contents, and then I dig into my cap stash at home for a replacement. I considered carrying a few spare caps in my pocket for emergencies, but fortunately lost caps are rare enough that it doesn't seem necessary.

LOL, 6 ounces of brandy isn't enough for you? I'd be falling out of the saddle.

My horse has learned to judge the weight of the flask. As it gets lighter, he starts to rely more on his own judgment instead of mine.

SimpsoMatt - what about a couple of these?

http://cgi.ebay.com/64oz-Huge-Jumbo-Alcohol-Whiskey-Flask-Screw-Cap-2-Liter_W0QQitemZ250346455387QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_D efaultDomain_0?hash=item250346455387&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C 240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

I think you'd need a couple, one on each side, just for balance, otherwise your horse might get confused and tip over.

Yeah, but then I'd have to remember to drink from alternate sides to maintain the balance. Might be easier to just use the camelback my brother gave me (same brother that gave me the nice leather-covered hip flask ... he hasn't totally grasped the concept that there's a limit to "more is better").

Jings, SimpsoMatt - hope your horse is up to weight, as they say. With the amount of consumption you're anticipating, you may have to pull a Billy Connolly!

I was watching the Hermes Canteen on Ebay but it went too rich for me very quickly.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=120382545830

It's nice but then I remembered I already have three nice sandwich cases at home, they just aren't sterling and don't have the H on them.

Now if I could just remember where I put the one my mother-in-law gave me for Xmas.

I have an Hermes hoofpick somewhere. I wonder what I could get for that on ebay.

Ever notice that no thread gets empassioned replies like those dealing with flasks or their contents?
I'm sure that must say something about us.

Hermes flask?!!! :yes::yes::yes:

Is this so you can pick out the hoof in the field AND pour an antiseptic like substance in the clefts? Better not confuse your creme de menthe with your coppertox!!!! :D:lol::lol::lol:

All the members of the Snobbington Hunt are gonna have to be issued Hermes Hoofpicks for sure! I'll talk to someone important about it.......

Well, I wound up buying one off that U.K. site. I think with captive top and shipping it was about $70. Today it arrived and I saw that the 4 oz. size was WAY too small. So, that will be donated to our hunt's end-of-season silent auction.

I've just bought a nice 10 ouncer including funnel off ebay which was $0.99, plus shipping.

I sometimes wonder why I even both with equestrian sites for items that are available elsewhere.

Anyone know where a saddle flask like the above is available at a reasonable price? Horse Country want $930 for their "better" quality (they don't even give the price of the "best" quality -- which I don't consider to be reasonable!!

I have upgraded my flask! Bought a St Hubert medal, ground the loop off the top (that was there to wear a chain through) and super-glued the medal to the cap of the flask. Subtle, yet scandalous.
