I am planning to send out one Sec. B Welsh 2 yr old filly with Oliver Brown. She is a late baby though, so may be a bit young looking by show time. Her breeding is Land's End Adagio X Benlea Pandora. I will also probably take a yearling Sec. B filly and two 3 yr old Sec. B geldings out to our one Pony Hunter Breeding show up this way and possibly a couple of others down East. I look forward to hearing about any others going out on the line this year.

Kinda sad...I won't have one young enough for the pony breeding this year! I tried from 2005-2008 and got little to no support from other West Coasters. What a bummer. Hoping the USEF Zone 10 continues to hold the division. I would hate to seem take it out like they did awhile back.

I am going to be taking my 3 year old to a few this year in Northern California. I took him to a couple his 1st and 2nd year. I really enjoy the hunter breeding classes for the experience.

I don't have any ponies, but 3 horses. One is a 4 yr old Hanoverian by Loerke and out of a Rotspon mare. He'll do young hunter u/s and my mom will do amateur handler with him when she feels so inclined. I also have two yearlings: the first is a Hanoverian filly by Gold Luck out of a Contucci mare and the other is an Oldenburg gelding by Don Principe out of a Lancet mare. All three will be at Devon, the filly handled by Jay Raach and myself handling the others. Very excited for this season!

I think I am going to show my pony stallion in the 3 year old classes. It depends on if the dates conflict with any dog shows (my new fun thing). Should be interesting as I have not taken him anywhere and I've always shown fillies.

I'm going to be showing my yearling filly, Bewitching. She's out of a TB mare Witch Is It, by Section A Welsh stallion, Twyford Cadog. This will be my first time out there showing in the pony breeding. I'm looking forward to it.

Here's a picture of her from when she was 3 months old. I took some recent ones, but she's just so fuzzy that I can't bring myself to show them.

Although I may be putting her up for sale before then because of a change in my marital status, so we'll see...

I have a 2 year old filly (Fabuleux - Fun Choice) and maybe a yearling colt (Royal Prince - Donnerschlag) if he doesn't sell. Filly will go to Devon; colt will go to other local PA shows (trying to save some $ as I will have 2 three year olds to start next spring).

I know that we have one show this year that will be holding the pony hunter breeding classes in our area, so I plan to take a 2 year old filly and a 2 year old colt. Other then that, if any other shows do plan to hold hunter breeding classes for ponies, we will be there!

We will have a yearling non-TB colt. I have someone interested in purchasing him, but DH isn't crazy about selling him. We're going to have a few more talks in the next few days (a bird in hand...and all that jazz).

This colt is nice, so regardless if he sells or not, he'll be shown at Devon.

Showponies....

Email the USEF and ask to have it as a Zone 9 division in 2010. A friend and I just started asking show managers to add the division here in Zone 10 and they were very happy to do so. Once you get the division added, be sure to go to all those shows and support it, get everyone you know to support it, too. I often traveled very far to find that I was the only entry, but I stuck with it. Zone championships lead to cool photos in the Chronicle and USEF Mag each year which makes for good exposure. You bet trainers noticed when I paraded around with fancy babies. No better way to market than to get those babies seen by top hunter barns.

Start with the shows that already hold the horse classes as they will have the right judge. I found it hard to convince some managers as not all the judges have a breeding card and thus certain judges have to be arranged to do those shows. One time the course designer had a breeding card and was allowed to judge that class.....guess that was OK as the points counted for the USEF. We were fortunate to have a big A show hold the division a year before it became Zone rated. That allowed us to show that their was interest and it wouldn't be a waste of time/money/ring space.

We are prepping 2 yearling colts by Empire's Power to show in the yearling classes. My daughter just went professional & is now full time training at our barn and this will be her first year to give handling a go. She has modeled plenty of ponies in her junior years, but this will be new experience. This way if someone shows interst in the colts during the season, they are already up and out.
The only problem is she can't do two in the same class at the same time....and they are both yearling colts.
We will do the pony breeding classes, the VPBA Futurity and also the brand new North America Pony Futurity -which is in its first year as well.

ps--a fellow COTH'er came up with the Strikes Blue Name on a thread way back on a naming threa. This colt is genetically tested black and I am so excited to see him all shed out and clipped up.

Hey! It is the Northwest Sport Horse Club. They said that they are putting the hunter breeding classes back in for this year, back by demand. They had a WONDERFUL line up of classes the last year (which was '06) they put them in, with a nice group of Pony classes. Please do come this year to the show, as they have a great line up of classes. Let me know if you need any more info!

Quicksilver, which is it that is around you, Stoney Ridge? I am not too far from you in MI and have two yearlings that I would like to get out there. I was thinking I was going to have to just mainly do the Ohio welsh shows in Aug b/c I have two small children and cannot take a day just to drive for one show. I wish there was more near us!

Summerwood, the only Pony Hunter Breeding classes around here iare with the Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic which is held at the Cleveland Metroparks Polo Fields in Chagrin Falls. It is a AA rated show and there is a Grand Prix as well - you can get information at www.clevelandgrandprix.com. The Ohio Welsh show is in August and you can get information at www.ohiowelsh.com. Hope to see you over this way!

Hey I just found this post! I too am in Ohio and am voting for more pony hunter breeding. Has anyone ever approached the OPHA about doing the pony hunter breeding?

Mar. 15, 2009, 07:53 PM
Yes me - lots of times and it took a few years to get it added to the CVHJ Classic. However, if more people express an interest, maybe they will add them to more shows. I am certainly game to approach them again. Summerwood, the ones we had last year were decently attended - the biggest class was the 3 yr olds - about 6 or 7 in that one. The others had about 3 or 4 each. They did tell me they would be offering them again this year based on the level of interest.
