View Full Version : Video Examples of Good and Bad Movers Needed

My dear fiancé gets terribly bored watching hunter flat classes and is dreading tagging along to some schooling shows in the spring. Poor thing is not at all horsey and I don't think he knows just what he’s gotten himself into.
I've tried explaining what the judge is looking for in a hunter class and I think he'd have more fun if he had a better idea of what he's watching. When he goes to my shows I feel bad that I can't go sit with him in the stands and point some things out to him. Then there's the drive home which consists of "I don't understand why people get ribbons for going around in circles..."
I would love to get some videos for us to watch together either online or on DVD so we can do some comparisons. This is his idea and I'm so happy that he wants to learn, now I just need some help finding examples for him.
Let the recommendations begin!

Mediocre (not good, imo): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHvwWQdKIVI
Very good: http://www.silvercreeksporthorses.com/apiro.html -- go to Working Hunter (hack)
Both are, of course, my own opinion. And the top is videoed with only 3 mo under saddle, so it is a bit of apples/oranges, but... He's a bit better now. :)

This is my guy at home. We did some hunters but as you can see in the video he is NO hunter  He is rocking at dressage and eventing  He is a beautiful mover imo but just not a hunter mover.

Here's my boy going around the ring nicely, but he's never going win a hunter hack class  http://www.chronicleofmyhorse.com/video/1971868:Video:95523
Compare his build, frame, excessive knee action, etc to the horse in the link from brummel.

Here's my guy. He's a really lovely and big mover. In person, his trot is stunning and his canter is even better. It's not the best video, but you get the idea.

Whenever I see these type of threads, I expect to read a bunch of posts like Brummel's.... proven fancity schmancity big time winners. Whenever there is a "what does a good hunter jump look like?" thread, I expect to see photos posted of Rox Dene, Popeye K, Strapless, Allaczar, whatever. Instead... its never fails to be "this is me and my horse and we embody a prime example of a good _______"

Well I think there is some of that but also with many of those horses it is *obvious* to any one when a horse like that walks in the ring. . . what is harder and a better learning tool is how to place the good not *amazing* movers which i offered up my own horse as an example of. . . not that he is stellar or even close to a ribbon in good company much less a blue. . but he *is* a horse who would be in contention for a ribbon at the local level which is the type of classes he would be watching. . . so maybe so long as people are honest about what their horses are and are not then it is good learning experiment. . .

If you can get hold of a copy of Hilda Gurney's VHS tape "Selecting a Dressage Horse"- it's got the best examples I've ever seen of good and bad movers. She really goes into detail about it. It's a great tape. She covers conformation, movement, what to look for, etc.

I agree with you somewhat...but this thread asked for good and bad movers...not just good. I think anyone's horse falls into that range, right? Stop being snobby and read the thread for what it is. Sure, someone might think their horse is an example of 'excellent' when it's merely 'average' but why if you know the difference, no skin off of your teeth. You won't be fooled.
And just because a horse isn't a big time fancity, schmancity winner doesn't preclude it from having an exemplary hunter jump or being an excellent mover. There are multitudes of horses out there with amazing jump/form that will never have the chance to be campaigned to become one of those big time horses. Learning to spot that potential is the only way some of us can ever dream of owning a nice horse.
