I haven't used those, but I'm a huge fan of the Tie-Safe Ties (http://www.smartpakequine.com/productclass.aspx?productClassid=1620), which are the ones with velcro. They perform exactly as stated. You only need your horse to freak out once to realize how good they are. The release was incredibly fast, to the point that my horse was free and calm before I'd quite registered that he'd freaked out in the first place.

We have a pair of these as cross ties in our wash stall. The two times horses panicked, the ties DID NOT RELEASE. The first time a horse pulled back, the METAL snap that attaches one tie to the wall broke. That end is now held with baling twine between the "safety" tie & the screw eye screwed into the wall. The 2nd time a horse pulled back (during a veterinary procedure) NOTHING released. The veterinarian who was eight months pregnant ran away & the horse horse tossed me backward while pinning my daughter in the back corner of the wash stall. I thought my daughter was going to get killed as the horse pinned her with its rump. The tie never released anywhere, anyhow.

I bought one of those as it looked good but my daughther says they don't work. One of her students boards where they installed several of those & the student's horse managed to break every one of the Blocker ties. The horse throws herself backward swiftly & very hard & it's so fast the lead rope does not slide - the whole metal tie just breaks. I suppose if a horse just pulled back steadily & gently it would work.

Firstly, let me say that I *do not* get the obsession with safety cross ties. What's wrong with a basic quick-release clip and baling twine?
This is the product the OP described:

That said, I do use The Clip to tie to my trailer--a situation where I actually *don't* want my horse to get loose if he spooks and pulls, but I do want the rope to give significantly so he doesn't hurt himself. It could be used for cross ties too and is more sturdy than the Blocker Tie Ring.

I have the turtle snap ones. They've been "tested" a couple of times and broke away fine.

I use the clip, too. I love that product. I feel like I'm always pimping it, but I just want to share the love.
I have about half a dozen of them (one for each place in my BO's six-horse trailer). I loan them to anyone who hauls with me, both for safety reasons and so they don't break stuff on the BO's trailer. We also have them in the cross ties in our wash stall, and on our outdoor wash rack. They've been "tested" many times, and so far, so good.

Blocker Tie Rings are the only thing I'll ever use. They have worked with my 3 and they will no longer pull back; they stand stock still. BTRings gave when they said, they've stood being tested quite a bit and there is no sign of damage. I've never heard of a broken one. My mares did not pull back gently or slowly. YOu have to follow directions how to thread the cross tie rope thru the ring. I've seen them installed backwards and upside down (pretty sure they won't work that way)

We currently have the velcro type cross ties. I found that if the keeper over the velcro is pushed too far down the length, the break away release is delayed longer and even sometimes not at all...If the keeper is kept near the open end they seem to work as intended....On another note...I want to warn people of the extreme dangers in those bungee type crossties, especially in an area where there is no wall behind the horse, such as in an aisleway.
I had an older horse whose owner had him in crossties. His halter was a nylon type with leather breakaway headstall...He panicked in the crossties and flew backwards about 10-12 feet, and the bunngee ties stretched with him, they were attached to the wall with baling twine as well...Owner flew to front of crossties about a stall lengths away while horse panicked...then all of a sudden the horses halter broke at the headstall and the halter was sent flying forward like a slingshot still attached to bungees...and the brass fitings of the halter impacted upon owners face...halter went about 20' from horse to face.Halter broke her nose in 3 places, crushed her check bone and left a3"gash" in her face.Several surgeries later, alot of medical bills, time off work, she still has numbness in her face and a permanent scar. Those things SCARE ME TO DEATH!!! and I will never allow any of my horses to be tied with them, or work around them again!!!

The problem with the quick release clip is... The quick release is usually on the horse end and I don't want to get that close to a panicky horse to release him...

No it's not the blocker tie ring. I have used the blocker tie ring and LOVE it. I have one horse that occassionally freaks out. He never broke anything but that was still a nerver wrecking sight to see him thrashing around. Once I started to use the blocker tie ring, the panic episode stops. :) Now I got the blocker tie ring everywhere, the trailer, the stalls, the wash bay, anywhere I might tie a horse.
However, I don't see how it will work for cross tie and that is why I'm looking a safe way to cross tie..

Another vote for turtle snaps. I've seen a horse safely break free from them more than once :o

the Blocker Tie rings have helped my horse become cross Tie-safe again. I use 2, one on each side, and he is as safe as he used to be before he panicked that time and freaked out. I totally Endorse this product. ( used as directed)
