View Full Version : Women's cover-alls - DON'T DO IT!

I vowed 3 years ago to never, ever, ever, again wear a pair of coveralls EVER. They are the most unsightly things ever! The look terrible on men, so surely are even worse on women.

I wear black snow/ski pants and a Kerrit's jacket in lavender.

For a couple of winters I wore a navy blue coverall and while easy to get into and warm, they were the most hideious of things and I looked like a man! LOL.

I used to tease my husband that the neighbors probably all wondered why they saw two dudes hugging in the driveway and occassionally kissing.

I don't care how I look. I care that I'm warm!! :) My Carhartts are the greatest things ever. I may look like the Pillsbury Doughgirl, but I am warm, I can move, and best of all, it's a lot easier to curse about how cold it is when your teeth aren't chattering.

Besides ... the insulated bib overalls have the decided advantage of covering the small of your back when you bend over to pick a hoof or squat to brush mud off legs. Noooooo ... you will have to pry my Carhartts out of my cold dead hands. I will never give them up.

I agree that they are a fashion disaster, but when I am the only warm person in the barn, I just smile in my blue coveralls and don't care what I look like.

Spring is just around the corner!!!!!!!!!!!

My sentiments exactly. I tend to describe myself as an Oompa Loompa, but Pillsbury Doughgirl works too!

I LOVE my Carhartts too! But I once started working at a farm at the start of winter, so the boarders (many of whom became good friends) never saw me without some sort of layering system, and once winter (in NY) really hit, they didn't see much of me but my face! ;) When spring came, they all started saying they never knew I was so thin! HAHAHA Even when I rode I had about 3 pairs of leggings/pants on! It didn't help that I wore a MH jacket that was 2-3 sizes too big so I could fit mondo sweatshirts underneath!

Fashion Make-overs... Farm Edition!

My daughter keeps threatening to submit me for the show "What Not To Wear", since all I wear is jeans, t-shirts or sweat shirts, usually in various stages of grunge from the barn (start out clean in the AM, disaster by nightfall).

The only time I wore the overalls was when I was 7-8 months pregnant, the maternity jeans just didn't work well for barn work then.

In winter (when I lived in the frozen tundra) I had a pair of the Mountain Horse riding pants to wear over my jeans for the really cold days and night, and yes, it was still a fashion disaster, but I was warm and didn't care!

P.S. - I do plan on wearing my bibs at the horse shows, too!:lol:

Ya, but you can be just as warm in things that are not quite so funky as cover-alls.

I'm going to contact the networks today and try to push my idea for a new show! Beware ladies, I'll be coming to YOUR barn next!

My warmest, lightweight-est, "layered look" makes me resemble a cross between the Michelin Man and the Crazy Catlady from The Simpsons:

*Polarfleece sweats with thermals underneath (Hot Chillys Rule!)
*DH's old microfiber Thinsulate-lined anorak on top (over more polarfleece & a T-neck)
*Rubber duck boots (more Thinsulate) over wooly socks < the fuzzy-looking synthetic ones work best!
*TSC stocking cap (Thinsulate again)
*2 pairs Magic Gloves over Hot Chillys glove liners

I doubledog dare you to take a Bedazzler to that!

I had to retire my 20yo+ ski-bibs when I tore them on something and replacements are too pricy.
I wish Carhartt would get the Polarfleece Memo and use that to line their bibs. Instant warmth in place of that chilly-at-first sateen.
And how about some sort of spaceage fabric to replace the godawful stiff & heavy canvas?

Gotta disagree that Carharts "look terrible on men". I'd much rather oogle a working guy in his coveralls than some twit-ish girlie-man in a business suit.

And while I haven't made particular note of it, I don't think I've ever seen a woman in coveralls that I thought looked the least bit like a man.

I don't care how I look in my coveralls. I am a cold weather wimp and those ugly things make chores in the winter somewhat tolerable. And I live in the southwest for cripes sake! I would die if I lived in a place that actually GOT cold.

My coveralls are huge on me which allows me to layer underneath and still have enough room to move. They were a real life saver on my job a few years ago when we spent several days working in the field on cold days, with the wind blowing, sitting on the ground cutting grass samples. My co-workers snickered at me in my ugly coveralls, but I was the one warm and comfy!

Gotta agree with Greysandbays on this one...I find a man in coveralls attractive.
And oddly enough...I get more male attention wearing my Carhartt bibs, Muck Boots, Carharrt hooded sweatshirt and fugly earflap cap than I do if I'm all glitzed up. If I'm wearing my normal winter barn wear and go downtown to fill up the truck...I get more offers to buy me coffees or guys stopping to chat than I ever do any other time. Men apparently are drawn to women filling up diesel cans in bibs than they are to women in heels and a dress.
Now metrosexual men might not be attracted to bibs on a woman, but those are of little use anyways. I'm more impressed by a man with tractor grease on his hands than a manicure.

The other thing that is really nice about coveralls is that you can be all dressed up underneath....when I had my own place, I had to get dressed up for work in the a.m., drive to the farm, do chores, drive to work. With the coveralls, it was just a matter of pulling them off....no screwing around with 100 layers.

Sorry. I take function over fashion any day of the week when it comes to staying warm.

The Christmas we were building our farm and living in a tiny rent house...my husband bought me:

blue and white striped overalls
a plastic Timex watch
rubber muck boots

when I started to give him the 'questioning eye' he quickly told me that he thought I would need all this stuff after we moved and anxiously said, "There is MORE!"

I reached for the largest box and inside was a ski suit!! You know the one that is like overalls with a matching jacket. I was so excited and was just about to ask him where we were going.....and he said, "Winter overalls!" That ended my feverish digging in the box looking for the plane tickets!

God love him...he really is a good guy!

OH, oh, about 7 years ago, I happend across a Carhartt hip-length coat made out of a synthetic canvas. It has worn like iron, like a good Carhartt coat, but looks like heck. I would give body parts for a new one, but cannot find them any more--only the canvas ones. I **LOVE, LOVE, LOVE** that coat!!! It isn't insulated, but put a good fleecy quarter-zip under it, or a Carhartt sweatshirt, and you're all set!

And I especially love Carhartt quarter-zip sweatshirts. Also wear like iron (of course) and are just so much warmer than any other sweatshirt.

You have not been keeping up with farm fashions! Women's Carhartts have elastic in the back waistband to give you a more shapely appearance. The other thing that had me swooning over them was not only do the come in numbered sizes, instead of s,m,l,xl--as if the women of the world can be divided into 4 and only 4 sizes--but they also come in different lengths.

Since we are new farm owners I was trying on my first pair recently with mr. subk. If you could have seen the hot look he gave me as I was zipping them up while standing in the middle of the Tractor Supply store then you might have changed your mind about how flattering they are. (Of course mr. subk gives me a hot look after I've weed eated the fence line too--not so much because he likes the dirty, sweaty look, but because he's thinking about the money we're saving by not hiring someone else to do it!)

Besides ... the insulated bib overalls have the decided advantage of covering the small of your back when you bend over to pick a hoof or squat to brush mud off legs. Noooooo ... you will have to pry my Carhartts out of my cold dead hands. I will never give them up.

I second this motion!! I bought my current insulated Carhartt's when I was pregnant with my daughter 20 years ago and I've been wearing them since (although now, ahem, they fit just fine over my decidely NOT pregnant body :no:). My experience has been that:

function trumps fashion every time.

Corollary: most things labelled "women's" are of inferior quality as opposed to "men's".

If they're coveralls and a woman is wearing them, they are a woman's coveralls.

I don't recall the last time I gave a rat's ass what I looked like when I was working outside in the cold. That's *way* down the priority scale for me.

I mean really, who cares if your frozen corpse is dressed attractively? :D

Well I'm no seamstress but I'm pretty sure that kind of tailoring for my coveralls would only require a hole punch. ;)

Yes, most definitely!!! Same with childrens clothing...made to look like men's but only in looks...not in quality or function! Which was why I bought the smallest men's Carhartt bibs instead of the better fitting boys bibs. Because I tried both on...the boys had maybe half the insulation/fill of the mens. :o
Same with everything else...I wear men's sweat pants, sweat shirts and buy men's sweaters too. Not easy when you're a small female finding men's sizes but I don't mind somewhat oversized and men's clothes wear better, last better and don't seem to shrink when washed.

Off topic...but why the hell won't this let me type non-italics?

Clothes sold as 'womens' rather than 'mens' always cost more and usually have fewer pockets. Not key selling points for me when I'm buying barn chore clothes. I have a Carhart jacket but not the overalls or coveralls.....yet......but DH does. I'd steal his but, sadly, he is taller and skinnier than I am.

I have to say, I have quite happily been wearing my SO's (the barn owner) waaaay too big, extremely well-used, overalls for over two years now. They even drag on the ground when I wear them and have stains all over them, with frayed arms/legs. But I just don't care. I am warm. I can throw them on and go. My other clothes stay nice. Best of all: I am warm and comfy. Just this year we found a blue pair that are mens -- but smaller. Finally, I'm not completely drowning.

As I once posted in another thread, he's been known to only have his boxers on underneath if he's just running into the barn. You gotta love that.

I like to dress up --- we go out downtown or to the casino a couple times every month. I love my lucky jeans, heels/boots, Victoria's Secret push-up bra (worth it's weight in gold:eek:), cute tops, etc. But I think it's absolutely ridiculous to see someone at the barn in little tops and/or tight jeans. Why are they trying so hard? Did I mention our one boarder with her fake b**bs and teeny, tiny halter tops, diamond studs and hair/make up competely done? Maybe she's trying to impress her horses -- so far, I don't think it's working.

stacey and clinton don't understand farm girls. Frankly, I don't think they always look so great either.

I was thinking about this thread on the way to the barn this morning in 2 degree weather, warm and toasty inside my carhart bibs & jacket. :) I really could care less what someone thinks about my clothing as long as I'm warm, actually I think I stopped caring about that sometime in high school. I would so rather see someone in too many clothes than too few, but that's probably my age showing.

One of my other winter sports is icefishing. If you are sitting on a bucket in below zero- fashion is off the map. But for all the bundling up, full body suits and covered from head to toe- the guys always seem to know there are "ladies" on the ice. We are never mistaken for dudes, although I have NO IDEA how they know! No fear on being mistaken, misshapen perhaps, but not mistaken.

Yesterday morning, when it was 15 degrees at the barn at 5:45 A.M. and I was feeding on my way to my office job, I would have loved to have been wearing coveralls over my work clothes. It would save me time (I currently bring my work clothes along and change in the restroom at the office) AND kept me warmer to be dressed for work and wearing a pair of Carharts.

My husband would definitely notice if I made off with his pair, though.

Another unbelievable dull and inane "Tidy-Rabbit" commentary  Just say NO to posts by TR

Not sure I understand you-if Tidy Rabbit's threads are such a colossal waste of time and of no value to you, why even bother taking the time to post? It's all in good fun-you are way too serious. Instead of taking the time to post to something you feel is so "unbelievably dull and inane" perhaps that time would be better spent in your barn-cleaning stalls?

Back to the topic at hand-I for one pretty much look like a wreck in my barn but if I am warm-I don't care unless of course some gorgeous guy shows up unexpectdly and then I am cursing myself out..:D

Well, I would DIE without my gorgeous black oh-so-slimming overalls. That suit is impervious to cold. As long as my gloves, hat and boots are as good- I am happy!

There are some trade-offs. I am not nimble in my suit, even though I only wear a pair of jeans and a turtleneck under it. However, when I fall down, I am generally well padded by it. If I have to lift a leg as I climb over a fence line, it could get ugly. If the temperature reaches 30 degrees, the suit feels like neoprene, and I am fairly sure I will die. It did give me advance warning of what hot flashes should feel like.

And then there was the first time I wore it, when we had a big snow. I decided I would ride my mare out, blanket back, and pony a second horse, so I didn't have to wade through the deep stuff, all the way out to the back paddock. I placed a five gallon bucket next to the mare, and my hands on her withers, and leaped up.

I could not get my leg up in time, and I went head first, over her back, into the snow. The mare snickered loudly. Fortunately, no other humans were presented to witness me pulling my head out of the snow, and rolling over onto my back, laughing too hard to get up.

I led the horses out. But, I was warm!

tee hee this thread made me giggle.

the only thing that has kept me from buying a set of coveralls is the fact that they're so darn EXPENSIVE, and i'm poor and would rather just wear (literally) 10 layers of clothes i already own to do barn chores.

but let's face it ladies, it's IMPOSSIBLE to look good and stay warm simultaneously. especially for those of us who lack any natural insulation and must layer on approximately 50 pounds of clothing to stroll out to the barn.

although i admit it is funny to see people's reactions when they first see you "de-barn-ifyed." we went through a quarrantine period at one barn i worked at, so i had to shower and change before leaving for the night (all clothes/boots shoved in a hefty bag and washed IMMEDIATELY) so i wouldn't risk infecting the horses i rode at a different facility. i emerged from the barn shower one night squeaky clean and dressed in a cute outfit, ready to go out when i got back home, and everyone in the office did a double-take. who knew they wouldn't recognize me without dirt all over me, old cruddy jeans, an ugly stained coat, and hay in my hair?!

I'm still back at the coveralls modified with boob holes. Do you just leave it as is or attach some sort of Madonna-like projections?

Didn't men's pajamas, way back when, have a flap for the posterior? Or maybe it was the front. Can't remember. Anyway, you could do something like that over the boob cutouts ... line it with polarfleece or something.

I like those women's body covers. Kinda wish I'd seen those before I got my Carhartts. I wonder how warm they actually are.

I have to say that Carhartt is ruining their reputation with their women's clothes. I looked at a pair of their jeans, expecting rugged work pants, and they were TIGHT, pre-wornout-looking, stretch sexy-teenager pants that only came halfway up my thigh. Sigh...

SaddleFitterVA
Feb. 8, 2009, 07:55 AM
Er...if they only came halfway up your thigh, perhaps you needed to try a bigger size.

So long as they carry BOTH, they can still have stuff that appeals to the younger and trendier set.

Sadly, I got my Carharts right before they started doing women's sizing. But, that's ok. I found a small enough size...sorta, for men. Then, the next year I got the jacket.

They are warm. They are no less attractive than the Mountain Horse zip-over lined riding pants...I can barely move once I'm bundled up.

I just remind myself that everyone will say how skinny I look come spring. And I'll have lost 10+ pounds....in clothes.

I hate winter. Hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it hate it.

Carharts, while ugly and bulky, keep me from being miserable too.

I wear the Tuff Rider puffy pants. I loff them. Very warm. But I don't do barn work/chores. But put them on over jeans or my breeches while I'm at the barn. I can ride in them when it's really cold as they have the suede patches on the inside of the legs and butt area.

http://www.theequestriancorner.com/product/20-1006-100176-221-C

They are easy to take on and off. And I just have a barn jacket I wear for up top.

I'm like MistyBlue. I'd need just a hole punch for the boob area!

You would have to pry my Carhartt Overalls out of my cold, dead hands to get a hold of them! Haha.

I did go for the Black color, but I could care less what I look like, I stay toasty warm in winter! And my boyfriend doesn't care what I look like in them...He actually smiles when I put them on before heading out to the barn! :)

I bought mine last year when all the winter hunting gear was on clearance. I buy the boys size, and all they had left was camo print. :)

But I could give a rats behind about how I look...heck I've been known to wear the things even while doing housework. They're that comfortable!

lcogan...those SaddleArmor look pretty neat for riding in the cold! I'm going to search and see if I can find more info...that link doesn't say anything about what temps they're rated for or prices. I particularly liked where it said "Resistant to hay and shavings." :D
