If only Brooks Brothers shoppers knew they could go to their local tack store and find boots just like these for so much less...

LOL! My customs were less than that! Got to love those fashionistas. maybe I can sell my old field boots on Ebay to one of those wannabe's.

Hmmmm, I wonder, if I showed up in the middle of NYC in my TS, tall boots, and hunt coat, would I be accosted by the fashion paparazzi asking who my designer is?

Nope! Did that once (sans the jacket) when I caught a flight right after a show (very tight) to go visit my dad in manhatten a few years ago. It was spur of the moment, he was there on business and we decided to do the trip during a 5 min phone call the morning of. Oddly, I got waaaaaaaaay fewer stares walking around NY in my TS, Sergios and ratcatcher then I do at my local target!

Those boots are outrageously priced! $1K for a what looks like some cheapo field boots? Yikes.

Ya gotta love fashion and the folks that will pay for it. I bet those boots never fir "right" even for walkign around NYC....not like a great pair of tall boots are great for walking in anyway.

It's really sad to think that I could essentially walk down the streets of Toronto in my riding clothes and considered to be "in fashion".

If you're paying that much you might as well buy semi-customs at the very least.

Me, I'll take a pair of those Ariat Monaco's.

Hahaha, at work the other day, a lady walked in wearing tall winter Mountain Horse riding boots, and what looked like leggings under her long parka type coat.
I said "ohh, you must have been riding, eh?" Then I launched into how I had a wonderful hack that day and how lovely riding in the winter is. She looked at me like I was from mars and said " what makes you think I have a horse?" I said, "well, your boots". She said "they are Mountains" and I said "yes, Mountain HORSE riding boots!!!! I wear my riding boots out sometimes if I'm on errands after a ride, but frankly, she looked silly in her big clunky MH winter riding boots and fur parka.:D

I've noticed on several tv shows in the last 7 days that folks had this fashion. wearing boots and breeches, and they are not riders...!! Example: "How I met your Mother"

Aaah so that explains the "I like those" comment I got from the woman in line at TJMaxx the other night. I in my boots and breeches and covered in hair and just trying to get in and out with the socks for DH's business trip (since I rode instead of doing laundry) and this woman is looking at me and then pays me this weird compliment. I'm expecting the conversation to continue along the lines of "Yes, those Ariat full seats are comfy, no?" But nothing. I guess she just thought I was following a fashion trend. Perhaps Eau de Horse Sweat will be the next hot perfume.

I saw that...weird-ish

These boots look oddly short and the tops are wide....I get it (fashion) and they are pretty, just hard to get used to the look of them. At least they're laced correctly. Saw a lady the other day with her's laced wrong - that was weird looking.

Yes!! This is what I saw on an episode of House the other day. WTF?

The character looked ridiculous.

A few years ago in NYC I saw a woman in a velvet "riding" blazer, leggings with knee patches, and metallic gold knee-high stiletto boots... it was one of the more interesting interpretations of equestrian fashion I've seen.

What I don't understand is that those of us that have to wear this crap - especially in 90degree heat & humidity - b/c we have no choice! What's the first thing we do out of the ring? Take as much of it off as we can! Let's face it - it's not the most comfortable or figure friendly stuff to wear!! Hello?

I had to dress up to go somewhere a couple of years ago and had NO clean collared button down shirts, so I wore a ratcatcher that was fresh from the sry cleaners. I didn't button it up all the way and I didn't wear the choker, but I got SO many compliments on that stupid shirt!

My sister, who is not horsey and always Must Be at the Height of Fashion (suffice it to say that the two of us could not be more different in that department... ;)), was wearing riding tights the other day. I made fun of her, but must give her that they were at least REAL riding tights - she was smart enough to figure out that she didn't have to pay $400 () for the designer ones, and went to the local tack store and got EQs instead.

She does not yet have riding boots (she was wearing tall boots, but not the riding-style ones), and assured me that should she ever make such a purchase, she would be buying Ariats, not Jimmy Choos... I suppose perhaps I HAVE been a good influence after all!

i am actually tempted to do this sometimes! *blush* especially because i have some pretty shirts that either a) no longer match my show coat or b) the sleeves shrunk so i can't show in them. i hate to have them just sitting in my closet not getting worn! so i compromise by wearing them under sweaters for lessons.

Guilty- I did this. I have a really pretty TS show shirt that is beige and white striped with pink borders on the beige stripes that I used when I showed IHSA. (hard to explain but very pretty). Well I wore it with a pair of beige pants to the office with my paddock boots, I work in accounting so they are pretty stuffy. I have never gotten so many compliments on my wardrobe!!!

So do it, wear them! Only one other girl in my office is horsey, she is actually a barrel racer but did hunters as a kid. She noticed it was a TS, but asked to borrow it.

I've worn mine. They're as high quality as any other nice button down shirt, lord knows we certainly SPEND enough on them.

I've also worn dry cleaned show coats. I mean, it's a $400 jacket.

see, the problem is that i work in a horsey office, and everyone would KNOW it's a show shirt. and then i'd just feel silly.

I was in a shoe store once wearing my old scuffed up paddock boots because we just come from the barn. A lady comes to me and says that she really likes my boots and how did I get them to look so authentic and natural? Haha...apparently they sell riding boots that look scuffed up so you can pretend you horse back ride?

Many years ago when I worked in an office in Manhattan, I'd wear my white ratcatcher with plain, velcro stock (unembroidered, but the kind the hunter princess wear, not the dressage queens) and a gorgeous old cameo I inherited from my grandmother. I always thought it looked lovely. No idea what anyone else ever thought.

Back in the 80's when I was a barn rat and only wore LL Bean boots, torn sweat shirts and what ever else was not falling apart I saw an add of a model wearing the same thing. Camp Beverly Hills made tons of money on the non-show wardrobe:)

It was high fashion to look like we do on the days when we are not showing and covered in whatever is most functional and worn for at least a decade.

All my suit coats are actually riding coats. Much nicer then real suit coats and warm and tough. If you don't look for the foxes on the buttons they are mistaken for custom made:)

Actually, I do wear my ratcatcher all the time, as casual wear. (I have an old one that I've had since I was 12, so it's smaller and I never show anymore, so why let it just hang in the closet?) Roll up the sleeves a bit, layer a tank top under it, and it looks really cute.

BOut 10 maybe 11 yrs ago I somehow managed to schedule myself to be in '2 places at the same time' or one place with just enough time if the first goes off as scheduled to make it to 2nd with bout 30 seconds to spare. One was in court to testify for someone and hte other on the back of a horse bout 45 mile from the court house.

Because I really didnt want to be at hte court house I figured id just dress for hte horse thing. I walk in with my boots( schooling non custom ones) really old britches, and a ratchatcher I had worn with I was a jr several ( like 6 or 7) yrs prior. The atty's on both sides, the clerk, and the lady who sits up front and does the notes( honestly can not recal hte title of hte person at this moment) before and after as I was trying to get out of the building stopped and asked where i got my outfit... imaigne their shock when I said shirt from 80-81 sometime, boots of rack at tack store, and only thing missing was green slime up back..

I must admit, I don't change after riding and sport my knee patch insulated Tuffriders on my way home to do errends. I suppose slobber and hair tell people I'm no fashion plate.

But I have this friend, a male model (not gay!); tall, gorgeous, long curly black hair, dark skinned hunk named DAVE (should be Romeo!) who spotted my horse catalogues stacked up in the bathroom. He came running out asking to borrow them because he wanted to order tall boots, breeches and shadbelly just because he likes the "look". I told him he could save a buck by buying used and he'd probably like them better anyway.
I was amazed at his reaction to "equestrian chic".

*Read this story with the knowledge that I'm not a minor. :D

At the end of the summer, I was gently persuaded by my family to join them in a pirate-themed LARP (Live Action Role Playing game) for a few days before returning to college. I therefore had about a day to come up with several days' worth of pirate outfits - these folks are HARD CORE about costuming - and I wasn't motivated enough to go out and buy anything.

So I packed some breeches, boots, blouses, and a funny hat. I got assigned the character of "Will", a young, effeminate lad making his way for the first time on a pirate ship. I sashayed around the event (think small-scale renaissance faire atmosphere - except pirates), making conversation and meeting new people. I thought my TS breeches and Ariats made for good pirate attire, especially on short notice.

Most of the other women involved were swanning about in tight corsets and the like, so I thought I was relatively safe from wandering eyes. Apparently not:

Male Scurvy Cur: "My, look at young Will's [physical features] in those tight pants! I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to [speak with him about life and buy him a drink]."

Female Swashbuckler: "Well, I certainly wouldn't."

MSC: "Why not?"

FS deadpans: "I'm her mother."

MSC (I'm told) turned beet-red and slunk away swiftly. Who knew riding dress was so provocative?

They did, they really really did! Lisa Edelstein had on breeches and tall boots. I did several double takes and even yanked hubby to get his attention on the outfit this supposedly "overstressed new mother" was stomping around the house in. You can just barely see the knee patch in this photo where she's holding her baby in the episode Big Baby http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1026263552/tt1273716

So it's not OK to wear my old ratcatchers (sans choker) to work?
Under a vest or blazer who knows they were last worn at a barn?

FWIW, I've also worn my huntcoats as blazers - very flattering, that little nipped-in waistline...

I've also worn my riding jeans to work on Casual Friday - along with paddock boots.

And my dress boots work just as well for Fall - under a long skirt they look positively fashionable!

Until I win the lottery, my formal (and not so) riding wear will just have to double as work clothes.

I've worn one show shirt to work several times and always get compliments. The one I wear is a pretty lavender and it looks really nice with black slacks and black blazer. Hey why not? Ratcatchers, they're not just for shows anymore.

I must admit here that I got so distracted wondering why this character, who has never previously been noted as a rider, was wandering through the episode in breeches and boots that I missed a lot of what was going on

I've worn ratcatchers into work before. We're pretty business casual, so in the winter I mostly wear sweaters or button downs. I've put ratcatchers under sweaters, without the collars done up, and gotten plenty of compliments on them. Actually, I had a conversation at the tack store last weekend with the saleswoman about people who came in to buy show shirts specifically to wear to work!

it looked odd to me, I was waiting to hear something about her leaving to go riding. I didn't think it was actually her chosen outfit for the office that day! Lo and behold I think it was...

DD and I were at the mall earlier this week.

We saw some anorexic looking mid 40ish female who thought she looked good in her "english riding apparel" OMG the boots looked terrible. There must have been a 3 inch gap around her knees...

and her walking ....well lets say she walked like they wer new boots and giving her blisters...

So much for fashion

The barn that I ride at is only about 5 minutes from the mall, which is an hour from my house. Needless to say, I do a lot of shopping in my riding clothes!

I was at the perfume counter in Macy's the other day, wearing Ariat field boots, side-zip breeches, and a hoodie. The woman behind the counter, an older lady dressed in head-to-toe designer wear, approaches me:

Her: "Wow, I LOVE your outfit!"
Me: "Oh thanks, I was just out riding."
Her: (and I still can't believe she needed this clarification) "Riding what?"
Me: (definitely confused) "A horse?"
Her: "Oh!"

I was making a valiant effort not to laugh at this point. :)

LOL I love it when that happens...you get such weird looks when you say that you just came from riding - looks as if you are the biggest pervert in town.
