So yesterday I was feeding and noticed one of my coming two year olds has, GASP, a MUSTACHE! It's quite prominent....and well he's only 1 3/4, so I'm sure it's going to get longer? For those of you (IF THERE ARE ANY) that have a horse with a mustache, how do you maintain it? I have him for sale, but I'm wondering if this is going to be a deal breaker? Luckily he clips well! Oh my.......

i only knew of one horse that had a "mustache." it was just a bit of fuzzy hair on his lip, really not a big deal. if it bothers you a lot just clip it, if you plan on showing the horse his muzzle should be clipped anyway.

We have an English Vanner that has a full blown mustache. The owner thought it was hilarious and actually put mustache wax in it to do the whole old western handlebar mustache thing, it really was quite funny. For the other horses that grow them we just shave them off.

Totally, I had a 2 yo once with a mustache like Hitler, I was embarrased beyond believe, never returned the next winters, so I assume we're all good :) as he is 18 now.

We have a boarder's horse that has a definite Hitler-style 'stash in the winter. It is very cute. He loses it in the summer.
I say leave it, it may make your guy more memorable to prospective buyers! : )

When I worked in a barn housing carriage horses there was one Belgian cross who had a full 'stache. He looked a bit like a walrus with it.
Not just random muzzle whiskers, this looked & felt like a (human)mans' moustache.
Does your youngster have any draft in him?

There was a horse with a handlebar mustache, back when I was a kid in 4-H. None of us had ever seen anything like it. It actually had a full spiral, was several inches long. No one was sure if it would grow back after clipping.
Leader had the kid clip the muzzle around the mustache, left the mustache itself alone. Clean and neatly combed into the spiral shape. No wax! The judges always got a kick out of it, kid usually placed because he did a good job with the horse.
Sorry, no photos.

 My Son's Pony had one  And she was a mare :sigh:
AND She HATED being clipped! It was a handle bar style. She HATED having it even touched  She was aggressive to the point of violence about it
The people we got her from - when asked "How did you get her clipped?" responded with "You didn't try to clip her did you?"
It was a nightmare! It has something to do with cushings disease.

Let me go feed and I'll download pictures. No! He's 1/2 Cleveland Bay (Idlehour Yorktown) and by my best mare I Wood, a tb, who has four non mustache foals! Does it always show up on male horses? I can't stop laughing about it. It's way too funny, sort of like a little boy going through puberty!

I knew a draft/paint cross that had one. It was the funniest and weirdest thing I had ever seen. No one else at the barn had ever seen one. We argued over to keep it or not. The owners finally ended up clipping it. I left before it had a chance to see if it grew back.
I always thought it was just a weird horse....now I know there are others out there.

I love it!! That is the same type of mustache our Quarter Horse sported for many years. His mustache eventually disappeared. Enjoy it while he has it.

Oh, I did laugh.
There was one horse at the barn that had a white mustache. (He has a blaze) I don't have a digital camera though, and I think it's the one that moved out last month.
A mustache! A mustache! If you've only got a mustache.
I once was in sorrow and tears
because I was jilted you know, so
right down to the river I ran
to quickly dispose of my woe
A good friend he gave me advice
and timely prevented the splash
now at home I've a wife and ten heirs!!
All through a handsome mustache.
A mustache! A mustache! All through a handsome mustache...
An imperfectly remembered excerpt from "If You've Only Got a Mustache," by Stephen Foster. He didn't just write 'Camptown Racers" and "I Dream of Jeanie".

Funny thing is that stallion is on my calendar for January, we laugh at it all the time. Hmmmm....breeding fee of 3500. I was going to geld Garrett this spring. ;)
Poor Garrett. He's the sweetest boy in the world! He's like a little geek with a mustache now! Thank goodness he is good looking with good conformation and athletic.

Mustache = very cute! Made me "HA-HA" very loudly - little dog jumped out of her skin next to me!
The nose hair = ewww! I'd have to be trimming that!
My little pygmy goat got regular beard trims because I couldn't look at such an adorable little girl goat with a beard! Maybe I'm just self conscious of that little chin hair that pops up every few weeks on my own chin - I was projecting on the goat!

Those pics are a rip. And no, compared to those, my horse is apparently clean shaven...or maybe the Fu Manchu look?

A friend's Drum Stallion, Harley (http://www.silverfeathergypsies.com/pages/harley.htm), has a nice one. We don't have a close-up, but it's best seen in the center column of pictures, fourth from the top. He loves for folks to play with it.

My old horse, Lexie, has a mustache, it's too cute! Everyone picks on the poor girl. Here is a shot of her showing it off, although it's really hard to tell in this photo how thick it is:

He's adorable! I bet the rest of his face is just as cute and I can only imagine his expression with you taking all the photos - he's probably dying to know why you're doing it and hamming it up at the same time.
Very cute!

Our Fjord?Percheron cross gelding has a moustache during the winter months. By the end of February, beginning of March it's long enough to curl around your fingers and twirl. He likes to have it fiddled with. Once the grass starts growing and the snow disappears and he strats grazing he wears it off.

Send the pic to Pat Parelli then he could be the official mascot for the Parelli Juggernaut.. they could have matching mustaches....
Nevermind.. I wouldn't wish that on any horse.

A few years ago at the Massachusetts Equine Affaire, there was a Gypsy Vanner mare named Dolly in the Big Barn. She had a beautiful little black mustache. I got permission from her owner to pet her and was surprised to feel how soft the 'stache was.

I also have a horse with a 'stash. He's a 7yr old APHA gelding with a white blaze, so his mustache is also white.
I shave it routinely for the show season with one of those purple "horse shavers" because it gets a closer shave than the clippers can produce.
It always grows back and it is remarkably fast growing. I just cut it with scissors a few days ago because it was getting icicles.
