My TB mare received a nasty injury last spring that took a long time to heal. She has a nasty scar on her knee that has started to crack open a bit in the cold, dry air. It's not proud flesh, but the scar didn't heal totally flat, either, because of where it is.

Any suggestions on a topical ointment that would keep it soft and crack-free?
Thanks.

I'd go with a vit e oil or cream, and really massage it on at least once a day. Manipulating the scar tissue will help it break down and reduce in size.

Vitamin E/Aloe cream will help.

Yep-- nothing you put on it will break down the scar tissue, but good old fashion massage on the tissue will help. As far as keeping the skin moist, you could try diaper cream to form a barrier and keep the skin itself moist.

I’ve heard of using “Preparation H” – yes, hemorrhoid cream.

Bag Balm, vitamin e, or cocoa butter should do the trick.

Bag Balm, cocoa butter, or Corona. Rub the ointment into the scar to help it soften up.

desitin. You know the stuff for diaper rash. Has everything everyone listed above and is cheaper! I've used it on scars to soften, and bite marks or general hair removal to help hair grow back quicker

Neither do you... about the only thing you don't drink, you drunk  .

Just in case it isn't obvious, I mean the thick lanolin ointment that comes in a yellow tube/box.

My Grandpa used to put bacon grease on scar tissue and swore by it. I was too young to remember, but my mom says that it worked! Don't let the dogs or cats get a whiff though:lol:

Corona - twice a week maybe. It's lanolin and a natural animal oil.
