I picked up this "gem" of a mooseX this weekend at a local auction. He is a 6yr old bay gelding who stands a little over 16.3h (sticked). Was told by the "trader" that he had come from a Fox Hunting Breeder in PA and then was a trail horse in VA for a man before he got him. He was headed for Sugar Creek. We actually picked up two but the other is a pony.

He is supposed to be a TB crossed with something. He has feet of steel and is very very laid back. I tried to get on him from the ground bareback did not make it slammed into him and slid down and all he did was look back at me as if to say "you idiot. You can't jump". Never took a step. Also trying to think of a name. What do you think of his conformation? What the heck is he?

I see draft, too - the short pasterns, moose-y head, and hindquarter all remind me of the draft cross I just sold. He's cute!

I dunno, but I LOFF him! Can you trailer him up to me?

I think probably 1/4 Perch/TB...very Perchy looking but not enough to be half....

Please check sticky in H/J for the Missing horses thread. Ernie is a 16.2 bay with white in is right rear. Bred by a hunter breeder in PA and then missing for many months--possibly in VA.

Any chance this is Ernie? Pics are on page 2, but time and wooly coat makes it hard for me to tell.

I have a TB/App cross that looks like this guy. Mine came (indirectly, after a failed attempt at foxhunting in TX) from a breeder in PA who bred App sporthorses (some were TB crosses). And, coincidently, his name is Moose (having, shall we say, a distinctive profile)! So the story you were told about your horse coming from a PA breeder of foxhunters could be a true one.

Did you check to make sure he is not lip tattooed as a standardbred?

That's what I was thinking too. Maybe a brand underneath that woolly coat and long mane. What ever he is, he is cute. ;)

My guess was DraftX or Standardbred as well.

At any rate, he looks like a very kind soul. Best of luck to you guys. ;)

Just because the few I've known have been rather plain in the head, I'm going to guess Cleveland Bay X. He's cute though--how about "Physical Ed"

Honestly, he looks like some sort of Tenn. Walking Horse cross. The head and butt are TWH to a T. Also, his feet of steel are like many TWHs I've known.

It would be interesting to see him move...even if he doesn't gait (which he probably doesn't), his trot will still be a telltale if he has any gaited blood in him. If you ride him, let us know what the trot is like...I'd imagine it is easy to sit to

He's not Eddie. He doesn't have a blaze and only has a small white patch above outside hind right.
He doesn't have a tattoo or brand of any kind.
From our little ride today he is complete dead sided, does not know directions and does not move out. I was lucky to get him to walk let alone trot. He has very good ground manners. Stands to be tacked and mounted but knows very very little under saddle. He is very careful about foot placement and does not touch ground poles. If he was a trail horse in the past he obviously just followed another horse around.

I bet he's a TB/Percheron cross. And I wonder if he is from the same breeder that I bought from several years ago who bought greenies from a from farm in Ontario, Canada.

No idea as to breeding, but if you are looking for a name - we have a "clompety clunker" locally who is called Sherman (built like a tank) - and I quite like that as a name.

Looks like some sort of drafty type cross to me. Maybe Cleveland Bay, or Irish, or Perch.

I think he would make a good "Stormin' Norman". He looks like a Norman to me.

Um, Ethan Allen was a Revolutionary, arms runner, hard-drinking, hard-fighting, hard-living man. Not a couch.

No, he didn't make furniture either.

BUT, he was a larger-than-life figure, a big tall man who captured forts in the dead of night with no bloodshed (stealth attack) but with demands of "Surrender this fort in the name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress!" Or, he actually might have said "Roll out and give me the liquor, you damned scoundrel!" Maybe he even said both.

SO Ethan Allen is a great strong name no matter how you look at it.

I'd call him Sam.

I was going to say perch/tb cross but when I looked at the other pics I don't think his butt is big enough. The shot from behind shows him to be pretty narrow in the behind... could be standardbred cross.

COlour aside, from the ears back, he looks like good old WallKicker.......same body shape and build. The good ground manners, standing for being tacked, careful stepping and not knowing how to respond to being ridden says track training to me - you can climb on to almost any Standardbred at the track and gee haw them around with no problems and many of them do get ridden from the test barn to 'home'. Ruffle the hair on the right side of the neck and look for white hairs, if he is, indeed 6 and a Standardbred, there should be a freezebrand there, unfortunately, the brand sometimes becomes random white hairs in winter particularly on those that seem to be part yak...noticed on Race Night, they clip the branded area to make the brand more legible. At any rate, bet you could harness him and go for a nice drive.... :)

Maybe

Caradoc ... was a man of proud bearing who rebelled against Roman rule in the first century AD.

STB was my first thought too.
As for names, I am thinking something slavic, and soft, Moushcka perhaps.
Critique? Well I;d rather not. He looks like a nice, sound, steady kind of guy and thats all brains and heart. Regardless of the angles and balance he may or may not have.

Where are you from?? Ethan Allen in the name of a chain funiture store here in the states.

BTW.. I think he looks like a standardbred. Too bad they don't have a DNA test for unknown horses like they do for mutts.

Catersun, I am from Vermont. Yes, I know about the furniture. They used to actually make it here (not sure if they still do.) Ethan Allen was a real person and he and his clan were powerful figures here. He was one of the ones who said (basically) "To @#**@! with the British and the Yorkers [New Yorkers] too, we'll boot them all out and make Vermont into an independent republic." (Though Vermont as not one of the original 13 colonies, the "Green Mountain Boys", often led by Col. Ethan Allen, participated in many battles against the British, such as Ticonderoga, Hubbarton, Bennington, Saratoga.) Ethan Allen's statue is on the front steps of our state house.

George Washington said of him, "There is an original something in him that commands attention."

It's too bad hardly anybody's heard of him any more.

Oh, by the way, he had a rather prominent nose. So all in all, Ethan Allen would be a cool name for this horse, although there were some early Morgans horses of the same name. I believe the old Ethan Allen lines were used in building the Standardbred.

I'd say draft cross too, likely with TB or STB. From your description of your ride (slab sides) he's probably broke to drive and just followed other horses for riding. Big, cute boy.

I'm going to say TB/percheron. I have a draft cross as well (morgan/clyde) and there is just some unmistakable features about draft crosses which your fellow has AND I think that you do have a "Gem". Once he's back in shape; he's pretty nicely put together. And it sounds like he's got a terrific character to boot!

I'll wade in with my opinion.

I see alot of horses at small shows that look a great deal like this one...and I don't see the draft cross here at all.

I see STB. Something about the head and neck look a great deal like the very numerous STBs around here sold as "TB crosses". Size is a little big but still within the norm, color and lack of white dead on.

I suppose you could have a TB x Morgan or Cleveland Bay (several of those I have seen have not been this tall and have a different shoulder though). Like I said, don't see the draft too much and no way it's a QH.

So I vote for STB. And, you know, TBs are almost always bred to other TBs in hopes of getting to the track with the resulting offspring. Cannot imagine breeding grade horses on purpose out of registered stock regardless of breed.

Imagine the real story is whoever sold him has no idea what he is either. Just a grade horse or one that lost it's papers in his travels. if he did lose them, I bet they said Standardbred.

Oh...and conformation wise, he has a nice shoulder, camped out a little behind, common STB type head, level topline, overall his appearance should improve with the coat shedding out. Looks in nice enough condition, needs some work on the feet. Overall a nice type if not the most attractive thing in the county.

Another vote for STB. He looks just like a STB mare I used to own and the description of your first ride sounds just like every first ride I,ve ever had on a STB off of the track. He is a doll!

I am absolutely no good at telling 1 breed from another, or what makes up good conformation, but his head looks just like the tattooed TB that a friend recently picked up at auction. That guy is about 16.2, huge feet and short, thick cannon bones.
