I know that devils claw and yucca will test. Does anyone know where there is a list available? My horses are on some for coat enhancing and I just want to make sure none are issues.
Thanks!

I assume you mean for showing? USEF has them listed here:

That is not the entire list - just common examples.
If you have questions about something you feed/use, your best bet is to email a COMPLETE list of the ingredients to the Drugs & Meds people at medequestrian@aol.com. Only they can tell you for sure whether what you are using is legal.

I know that the Black as Knight will test. Not sure about the others.

Thank you for the list! I didn't see the 3 items I had in question so I sent them an email just in case.
Sam - What in Black as Knights tests? I don't use the product but am curious.
This is why testable substances get tricky. You won't see Black as Knight on the list, but you will see capsaicin, which is a component of paprika, which is a component of BAK ;)

What about MSM?
How long before an event should I stop feeding it?

I don't think MSM is a problem!

I asked about a few things I have in the barn and they said to not feed CINNAMON or PAPRIKA for the 7 days prior to a USEF show.

I am a buyer for an Organic health food manufacturer. We make human and pet foods and more importantly we make several products for race horses. I have learned over the years that MANY herbs, even the organic ones, will have caffeine and Ephedra in them. We test all the herbs that I buy before we use them in manufacturing so we don’t accidentally use any of them. Those of you who use herbs on your horses need to be very careful because they can and do sometimes contain illegal substances.

The herb guy I buy my MSM off said that I have to stop using it before an event, but he didn't say how long..?

Most of us in the US don't know what the drug rules are in Australia. We probably aren't the best ones to ask...;)

Hi,
I am a Chemist and can tell you that MSM, which is
methyl sulfonyl methane, is NOT a herb FYI ...
You should contact your governing equine body in
your country (or the FEI) to determine what is and
what is not legal for you, and in what concentraions
or doses.
I have never heard or seen of MSM being a problem
even at the Internatinal/FEI levels of sport.

Lynn

Mandalea, are you feeding the MSM straight or is it mixed in with other supplements?
If you are buying it from an "Herb" guy then maybe it has Devilsclaw or some other common, but illegal for showing, herb mixed in with it.

He has it with chaff, BOSS and Ranvet, which is a complete vitamin and mineral supplement.
He stocks herbs as well as MSM, and stocks for this woman: http://www.thehorseherbalist.com/
We got it for one of our mares, and she said it wouldn't hurt for all of them to be on it. And it's definitely JUST MSM, nothing else. He said I should stop like 2 weeks, because it might show up, but I want to know what time would be best, INCASE it shows up.

Hi,
As others, including myself, have written here,
contact your governing equine body (or the FEI)
in order to to determine what is and what is not
legal for you to feed/administer, and in what
concentrations or doses.
I think your "guy" has doesn't know what he is
talking about as MSM does not test or mask.
This information is publicly available on the FEI
website.
What level are you competing at ??
Yours in sport,
Lynn
